1. Xavier had spent most of the night out. On his way home he met his cat-loving and cat-grabbing human neighbour, t_s. She had crooned sweet nothings in his ear, patted and cosseted him until he wriggled out of her arms and ran straight home via his cat-flap. He met his lady-human in the hallway who scooped him up into her arms and told him he was a beautiful baby boy and kissed his furry nose. In the kitchen, noting that his plate was full and waiting for him, he bumped into another human from his family who immediately patted his head and tickled his chin with affection. "Meow!" Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
"Meow!" Xavier said, feeling extremely loved and cared for. He knew that there was a specific word starting with the letter "A" for these lovely people but could not quite place it. Which word is it?

Answer: Ailurophile

An ailurophile is a person who is extremely fond of and devoted to cats. In the most positive sense - the Greek ending "-phile" originally just meant someone who appreciates a certain thing, and it has nothing to do with some terms indicating a deviant obsession.
2. Xavier became so comfortable with his adopted family that it reminded him of the happy time he'd spent with his mom when he was just a newborn kitten. He especially loves to snuggle beside Lilady and suck the tufts of his paws in contentment. Beginning with the letter "B", what else would Xavier and other cats and/or kittens enjoy sucking on?

Answer: Blankets

The suckling period is like that of a child sucking its thumb or a pacifier. Sucking on blankets, their paws, your chin, or earlobes etc. is usually a sign that a kitten was taken too soon from its mother. For a cat, this is relaxing and gives them the security of a mother surrogate. It is recommended to let a kitten stay with its mom for at least ten weeks after birth.
3. Xavier is a friendly cat. He has been caught napping in the big recliner on the lap of nmerr. While he naps, nmerr looks up a word in the dictionary. Xavier wakes up and puts his paw on a page. Could it be? Could he be looking for a word also? You finally determine that Xavier wants to know the collective noun for a group of cats, of which there are several. Trying to trick him a bit, you give him three other choices that do not pertain to cats. But Xavier will not be tricked. He knows the correct answer. Do you?

Answer: Clowder

Other collective nouns for cats include pounce, glaring, clutter and dout. Wild cats are also collectively known as a destruction. A group of kittens can be called litter, kindle, and kendle.
4. Because of so much crossbreeding among different cat varieties, especially in heavily populated areas, Xavier and his friend mayneeyak are confused as to what feline group he even belongs to. Maybe we can narrow it down for him. Which heavily crossbred group is a favorite, often seen in heavily populated areas? Xavier belongs in this group.

Answer: Domestic long-/shorthair

The domestic house cat (Felis Catus)is found almost everywhere on earth, making breeding among different purebred varieties a very common thing. Because there is so much crossbreeding, over half of the named breeds fall under the categories of domestic longhair and domestic shorthair. Whether they're placed in the longhair or shorthair category depends upon their style of fur and has nothing to do with the breed/variety of cat that engaged in the crossbreeding. Oh no. Xavier is gazing at me with a serious look of displeasure upon his face and his claws are exposed and pulsating. I don't think he appreciates being included in such a common variety as domestic longhair or domestic shorthair, nor having his friends and family, referred to even jokingly, as "dingbats". Sorry Xavier if I've hurt your fuzzy feelings. OH OH, he's tearing toward me like a whirling dervish! I'm outta here!
5. Not being a purebred, Xavier was never meant to sire kittens. As a responsible cat caretaker, WesleyCrusher thus had him neutered at eight months' age. What would be another term that could be used to describe Xavier's state?

Answer: Emasculated

Being a well-fed cat, Xavier is surely not emaciated and neither could he be described as effeminate. On the contrary, having been neutered at a relatively late age, he is a fully developed tomcat and also retains some of his male instincts and behaviors, although thankfully not to the extent of marking his territory with urine spray.

While Xavier would of course stress that as a self-sufficient cat, he is fully emancipated, this character trait has nothing to do with the surgery mentioned in this question.
6. Xavier the question cat is a nice uncle to his masses of nieces and nephews, something he shares with Heidi66. He loves to play with them and he likes to teach them. They all learned that they belong to the family called:

Answer: Felidae

Felidae, what else? This gigantic family goes from the big cat tiger down to the smallest kitten. Our dear friend, the house cat, belongs to the species Felis silvestris catus.

Falconidae are falcons, I guess you guessed it. Fringillidae are also liked by our furry friends, they love to hunt a nice fat finch. Fumariaceae are for the flower lovers. This family has beautiful members like the flaming heart.
7. Ouch! That latest mouse was obviously not one that Xavier should have eaten because now he is suffering from diarrhea, intestinal gas, nausea and stomach cramps. A caring WesleyCrusher rather quickly recognizes these symptoms as those of a parasite infection that, while unpleasant to both cat and owner, is thankfully quite easily cured. What is its name?

Answer: Giardiasis

Unlike most intestinal parasite diseases, a giardiasis has a good chance to resolve on its own, within anywhere from two to six weeks. However, during this time the cat is infectious and can transmit the disease to other cats as well as to humans, thus it is preferable to treat it quickly. Metronidazole and Tinidazole are the drugs of choice in the management of giardiasis. Gastritis is a stomach inflammation (uncommon in giardiasis) and gangrene is the death of some body tissue, usually on extremities - a serious health risk to cats when they manage to get a limb stuck in a tight place and usually requiring emergency amputation of the affected limb.
8. Xavier is not a happy camper. His toe pads are frozen and his fur is tipped with ice crystals! He has to find his cute friend with the long silky fur as it seems his pal mayneeyak isn't around to warm him up. All he can think of is that her breed has something in common with this desolate, frozen, mountain range. From that, what breed of cat is Xavier's friend?

Answer: Himalayan

Can you see poor Xavier wandering through the barren and frosty Himalayan mountains looking for his Himalayan friend, who is probably curled up in the corner of a warm armchair? The Himalayan is almost exactly identical to the popular Persian breed. The only real differences is that the Himalayan has gorgeous blue eyes and slightly different colours because of crossbreeding betwixt the slinky Siamese and the luxuriously soft Persian. Gee! No wonder Xavier is going to the extent he is to find her!
9. Oh no! Xavier has been lured with a treat into his pet carrier because mayneeyak has to take him to the vet for one of his immunization boosters. This injection will protect him against organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Which category of disease are these?

Answer: Infectious diseases

Like most kitty cats, Xavier despises needles, but he's smart enough to know that the injections will protect him from a lot of infectious diseases. This is especially important for our world traveller, Xavier, because the majority of feline infectious diseases are easily passed from cat to cat through the air and can spread directly and indirectly. Furthermore, some of the illnesses that he will be protected from can also be transmitted to humans. Knowing all this, our good buddy reluctantly gives to the vet. Wait a darn minute! No one told him there were going to be TWO shots! Poor Xavier...
10. Xavier's great-great-great-grandfather loved watching Saturday morning cartoons back in the late 1950s. One of his favorite cartoons was called "Pixie and Dixie". Pixie and Dixie were two mice who were pursued by which J-named feline?

Answer: Mr. Jinks

Pixie and Dixie was a Hanna-Barbera cartoon that lasted for three seasons during the years 1958-1961. Mr. Jinks catchphrase was "I hate those meeces to pieces".
11. Xavier is on a visit in Germany, staying at Heidi66's home. Checking the cat food he learns the German word for cat. Do you know it, too?

Answer: Katze

A German cat is a Katze. The word may come from the Nubian word for cats: "kadiz", but as usual with such old words, experts aren't sure and it may be something quite different.

Kaninchen (rabbit), Krebs (crab) or Kuh (cow) may all be found in the cat food cans.
12. Having a nice cat nap next on the lap of Heidi66, Xavier suddenly awakes to see the Walt Disney movie "Cinderella" is running on TV. To his great horror the cat in this movie belongs to the bad guys. And mice are nice! Shocking. What is the bad cat in this movie called?

Answer: Lucifer

"Cinderella" was made in the year of 1950. Lucifer, a big nearly black cat is a constant threat to the poor mice, who help Cinderella in many ways. At the end of the movie he falls from a tower. This movie is nothing for sensitive cats and their owners.
13. Xavier's surrogate parents felt he needed a playmate when they were away so they visited a rescue shelter. Lilady, a volunteer, suggested that she had a large, muscular, gentle and good-natured cat that would be perfect to introduce into their household. Which breed did she recommend?

Answer: Maine Coon

Surprisingly, a Maine Coon is known to get along very well with other domesticated animals and makes a wonderful pet with a child in the household as well. Its ears and feet are tufted and its coat is soft yet thick and water-resistant. All of these features allow it to endure the elements of the cold, outside weather.

However, they are affectionately happy with their family inside too. A male can weigh up to 25 pounds while a female can weigh up to 15 pounds. Lilady did state that she once had a male Maine Coon that reached a whopping 40 pounds and lived to be 15 years old.

The state of Maine adopted this breed as their official state cat.
14. Out for a stroll, Xavier jumped through an open window and found himself in joshu2448's lab. After giving him a cuddle he suggested he stick around as he was busy extracting the most potent chemical in his favorite plant - catnip! Perhaps he would like a little to give as a gift to his new playmate? What is the chemical name of this powerful cat attractant?

Answer: Nepetalactone

Nepetalactone can be isolated from catnip (Nepeta cataria) by simple steam distillation. The chemical only produces a response in cats when inhaled - catnip pills just wouldn't work. Licking, rubbing, and chewing the leaves releases the chemical for the cat to inhale. Nepetalactone is chemically similar to the active ingredient in valerian root and both herbs have been used by humans for many years as mild sedatives and painkillers. More recently, nepetalactone has been investigated as a cockroach repellent.

Only about 75% of all cats actually respond to nepetalactone. Fortunately, Xavier (and his new friend) enjoy it! As for the other options, napthalene is the active ingredient in moth balls, narcotoline is a cough suppressant and nonacosane is an insect pheromone.
15. Xavier thinks of himself as a connoisseur of fine milks and cat foods and believes himself to an intellectual. One of his favourite reads is "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T. S. Eliot which he found lying on t_s's garden table recently. His favourite character from this works is a very wise old cat who reminds him of his old grandfather Xavier Grey Whiskers II. What is the name of this famous cat character beginning with "O"?

Answer: Old Deuteronomy

Old Deuteronomy is a wise old cat having lived many lives in quick succession. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Musical "Cats" is an adaptation of the book.

The three incorrect answers are all famous cats, but not from this work.
16. While Lilady was playing with Xavier outside one day, a stray, six-toed cat came to join in the feline games. What is a cat commonly called when it has extra digits on its paws?

Answer: Polydactyl

This genetic mutation is more commonly seen in the Maine Coon breed but can also be found in other domesticated cats. Polydactyls were once associated with evil and witches, but later believed to bring good luck. At a very important dinner held at the White House in 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt's favorite blue-grey, polydactyl cat Slippers lay on the soft carpet in the hall just outside the dining room.

The president led his diplomatic guests to one side of Slippers as to not disturb his catnap!
17. Softly purring while perched atop Wesley's computer screen, Xavier ponders the many quirks of humans. Language, among them, is one he would never grasp. Combining sounds into words, fine, but why so inefficiently that some sounds have to be used so much more often than others. In fact, on this hot summer evening, it would be too much for him to remember four "Q" words that would fit a cat. Which of the following four words would be a rather strange choice to describe a cat?

Answer: Quisling

Being a quiet, quirky quadruped himself, Xavier of course knows there are exceptions to all these rules. Some cats, especially oriental races like Siamese, have a penchant for "singing" loudly every now and then - with the range of their vocal expressions being anywhere from a repetitive, single meow for some to others who deliver truly operatic performances. While most cats have a lot of personality and their own special, self-taught tricks, some are content to just laze around and develop no quirks of their own. Finally, an unlucky few have lost one or more legs and thus their quadruped status - most cats can live and be quite happy with only one front paw, many also cope with the loss of a hind one. There are a handful of cats living their lives with no hind legs at all, usually with the aid of a wheeled prosthesis custom-crafted at great cost to their human companions.

Calling a cat a quisling, however, would be something only a cat hater would do, considering that word implies breaking a promise of loyalty towards a ruler or institution - cat lovers however know that a cat only recognizes itself as a ruler.
18. Lying in the garden at night next to a dreaming WesleyCrusher, Xavier gazes into the sky, enjoying the twinkling stars. Of course, as a cat, Xavier is especially interested in the constellation of Leo. Which of these stars would he NOT be able to find in that constellation?

Answer: Rigel

Rigel is one of the brightest stars in Orion. The other three all belong to Leo. Regulus, Leo's brightest star, is actually a system of four stars orbiting each other. Ras Elased Australis is the fifth brightest Leo star and Rasalas, also called Ras Elased Borealis, is one of the darker ones, but still visible to the naked eye.

They appear close to each other, in the Lion's head, but in reality, Rasalas is much farther away from Earth than Ras Elased Australis.
19. Our friend Xavier is very happy today. He's found out that a first edition of his favourite story book, "The Cat in the Hat" is worth over $4,000! Xavier has one, and it's even autographed, which will push the value to over $10,000. Eat your heart out mayneeyak! Who is the author of "The Cat in the Hat"?

Answer: Dr. Seuss

Xavier never imagined how his initial $2 investment could have turned into four thousand "sardines", let alone ten thousand just by getting that oddball Dr. Theodor Geisel Seuss to sign it for him. Originally selling for $2 in 1957, Xavier is feeling quite proud of himself for hanging onto his copy. Now, of course, there's the minuscule problem of animals not actually owning things in the legal sense (any cat lover can attest that, in the real world, cats do establish ownership of items quite well), but Xavier isn't worried about that as he's already drooling over the thought of swimming in a pool filled with sockeye salmon.
20. Xavier often sauntered cheerfully around his neighbourhood after dark. He did not mind at all that there were no street lights in his area as he has a special ability to see better in darkness than he did in the day time. Whilst silently passing his neighbour t_s's home, he spied her standing at the end of her driveway. She did not have his special visual ability and was at first oblivious to his presence. She was startled to see two shining green lamps staring at her from the darkness! "It is only Xavier" she thought. She then remembered the reflective layer behind the retina of the eye, which causes this phenomenon in animals and cats and knew it begins with the letter T. What is the full anatomical name?

Answer: Tapetum lucidum

This term in Latin means 'bright tapestry'. It is a biological reflector system in the form of a layer of tissue in the eyes of some vertebrates, it enhances visual sensitivity at lower surrounding environmental light levels. So when we look at our cats eyes in certain types of light they can appear like spooky lamps.
21. Unfortunately, Xavier starts to howl and run about the house squatting on the edges of things looking as if he is straining at the lavatory. His personal servants take him to the vet, who diagnoses a Feline Urolithiasis Syndrome and a blocked bladder and recommends performing an emergency perineal...

Answer: Urethrostomy

A Perineal Urethrostomy may be performed when severe urolithiasis (stones in the urine) have caused the bladder to be blocked. This condition is far more common in male cats than in female ones and will have to be cured by a surgery folding back some tissue and thus widening the urinary opening.
22. Xavier loves to hear about cats from all around the world. Heidi66 delivered a letter to him from a Turkish friend of his. He is surprised to read that his feline friend loves to swim! What is this breed called?

Answer: Van

The van, beautiful long-haired cats, started their career in the lake Van area in Turkey. They are mostly white and - strange but true - really love to swim. There is a legend that they were blessed by God when they left Noah's ark.
23. Xavier loves getting out to visit all of his friends in the neighbourhood. He's a little confused though. He doesn't understand why mayneeyak would call some of his friends "feral". What word could be substituted for "feral" to help Xavier understand what humans are calling his friends?

Answer: Wild

Xavier is not confused anymore. He's downright MAD that people would refer to his friends as "wild". Feral cats are offspring of domesticated felines that live outside in cat communities rather than become domesticated. Xavier thinks to himself that it's people who are "wild" and cats aren't.

He prefers the word "free" rather than "feral" now. Feral cats are NOT stray cats, which is a poor feline that's lost or has been abandoned, while feral cats are born in the wild. If a stray cat has kittens in the wild though, it can be considered feral.
24. Xavier loves to talk, he makes many nice cat sounds which he is extremely proud of. He exercises his beloved voice as loudly and as frequently as he can. There is a particular cat sound of his which is his favourite because his neighbour t_s will often lean over the garden fence and give him a cat treat when she hears him make it. This wonderful word is listed in the Urban Dictionary and begins with the letter Y.

Answer: Yam

A yam is a loud meow or wail made by a feline.

A yell is to cry out loudly or shout, usually a human noise.
A yap is a yelp or bark in a high-pitched tone, usually a canine noise.
Yuck is a human word rather than a sound and is used to express rejection or strong disgust.
25. It's been quite a quizzical little journey for Xavier and his sidekick, mayneeyak, and he's soooo tired. He seeks out his favourite warm pillow, curls up on it, begins to purr contentedly, and takes out his favourite book series, "The Cat in the Hat", to read himself to sleep. Xavier drifts off to sleep and dreams of the wee cat from the story that saves the day. What's the name of the Little Cat that Xavier is dreaming of?

Answer: Little Cat Z

The question kind of gives away the answer. In the book "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back", second in the series, Dr. Seuss has named one cat after every letter of the alphabet, and as each "Little Cat" is released from under the Cat in the Hat's big hat, it takes its turn adding to the big mess in the yard, until the final feline, "Little Cat Z", takes off his own topper, unleashes a resounding "VOOM", and the mess disappears while all twenty-six pussy cats return to their untroublesome place beneath the big hat of their mentor, "The Cat in the Hat". Sleep well Xavier!
