Answer: Overlook Hotel

"The Shining", originally written as Stephen King's third novel and published in 1980, was given the film treatment by Stanley Kubrick, becoming an iconic horror film starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. The Overlook Hotel, while completely fictional, was based off a Colorado Hotel in the Estes Park area. An Oregon resort was instead used for outdoor shots in Kubrick's film. Notably, the hotel is haunted by murderous ghosts, and the Torrance Family discovers this the hard way as the father, Jack, is unable to overcome his personal demons and becomes one with the hotel. Stephen King, unhappy with Kubrick's adaptation (which changed the ending), allowed Mick Garris to direct a TV mini-series in the 1990s based on the book.

Sure, you may check in anytime you like, but according to the song's original band, The Eagles, you can never leave. The winner of 'Record of the Year' at the 1978 Grammy Awards, "Hotel California" is the flagship song of the alternative rock band appearing at the #1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 on four different occasions.

A live version of the song appeared on their 1991 album "Hell Freezes Over". In 2009, the song went Platinum in the United States. The Eagles followed this song up with their single "Life in the Fast Lane".

The Hotel California does not exist; it is completely fictional.

Answer: Luxor

Alas! A real hotel! While Luxor is a city in Egypt known for its historical value (it's on the site of the ancient Thebes) it's also a hotel on the Las Vegas strip known for its giant black pyramid and Egyptian themes. While the hotel was originally much more Egyptian in the past, years of service have allowed for transformations into a modern resort. Nonetheless, essential elements such as tombs, a sphinx, and the pyramid remain intact. Criss Angel is a notable figure in the area having once resided in a penthouse suite, performed a show there with Cirque du Soleil, and levitated in the light shining from the peak of the giant pyramid.

He is a 'Mindfreak', after all.

Answer: Dolphin Hotel

Not to be confused with the Dolphin Hotel of Walt Disney World, the Dolphin Hotel of Stephen King's "1408" short story (originally found in the "Everything's Eventual" short story collection) was quite the notorious locale for New York City travelers. I guess we don't need to give you room 1408 specifically, but our hotel does feature luxurious suites and furnishings to give you a regal stay.

When Mike Enslin stayed in the specific room, whose numbers add up to the unlucky 13, he got more than he bargained for.

The room meant to drive him mad, and had done so to many people for decades before he arrived. The short story was developed into a film starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. Directed by Mikael Hafstrom, it was released in 2007.

Answer: Fawlty Towers

Starring John Cleese and Connie Booth (married in the first series and divorced by the second), "Fawlty Towers" was regarded as one of the most important British-made comedies ever created by various media outlets. Set in Torquay, Fawlty Towers was managed by the Fawltys, Basil and Sybil, who are both quite the humorous characters. Cleese plays the role of Basil while Booth plays the role of the hotel's waitress, Polly. Only twelve episodes of the show were made over two series between 1975 and 1979.

Answer: Hôtel de Glace

The Hôtel de Glace is an example of an ice hotel, a hotel designed for construction, use, and inevitable demolition in the winter months. Such hotels are constructed annually and take in tens of thousands of visitors to the unique building. Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier is in Quebec, Canada and the Hôtel de Glace first opened in 2001. Construction for said building begins in November and demolition begins in April when the weather makes it unsafe to remain standing.

This hotel was Canada's first ice hotel though others have been made worldwide, most notably in Sweden. An ice hotel is featured in the twentieth James Bond film, "Die Another Day".

Answer: Westin Bonaventure Hotel

After its construction in 1976, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel became Los Angeles' tallest hotel, holding that position for over forty years. Like many hotels and locations in Los Angeles, the Westin Bonaventure has been host to filming for many movies.

The "True Lies" elevator actually contains a plaque to let visitors know about the fact. The Millennium Biltmore Hotel was one of the filming locations for "Ghostbusters", "Independence Day", and "Daredevil", and the Beverly Wilshire Hotel housed many scenes for "Pretty Women". All of these are in the downtown core of Los Angeles.

The Roosevelt Hotel, found in Hollywood, hosted the first Academy Awards and has had reservations from many famous celebrities.

Answer: Burj Al Arab

While all of the hotels listed are up there on the top tallest lists, Burj Al Arab fell to second upon the opening of the Rose Tower in Dubai. Reaching a total height of 321m high, the Burj Al Arab was built on a man-made island in Dubai and is similar in appearance to a ship sail.

In the 2000s, Dubai dominated the tallest hotels list with the top four positions (with two more set to surpass them in the same city). Similarly, Dubai passed Toronto's CN Tower with the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in 2010. Talk about living the high-life!

Answer: Bates Motel

Known as the setting in Alfred Hitchcock's iconic 1960s horror film, "Psycho", the Bates Motel is run by Norman Bates (played by Anthony Perkins). The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and has since been critically acclaimed. Both Bates Motel and the mansion overlooking it are featured on the Universal Studios backlot tour in Los Angeles though you can't actually stay in them.

The Bates Motel was revisited in three shoddy sequels and the Gus Van Sant remake of the movie. May I interest you in a shower?

Answer: Disney's Venetian Resort

Disney's Venetian Resort, while originally slated to commence construction in 1971, seems to have fallen off the radar. Like Disney's Asian Resort, Disney's Mediterranean Resort and Disney's Persian Resort, the projects were shelved decades ago though all four were planned to be around the same lagoon as Disney's Contemporary Resort. Over thirty major hotels on the resort property are available with four in every five owned exclusively by Disney. Disney's Coronado Springs Resort has a Mexican theme, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge borders the Animal Kingdom park (and animals can come to the windows of your room), and Disney's Contemporary Resort is on the monorail track between Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center.
