Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your investigations have identified the Government department in which the spy works. That department has the same name as a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alison Lurie. Which department?

Answer: Foreign Affairs

The book was made into a 1993 movie starring Joanne Woodward. For some reason that movie hasn't made its way over to Europe - perhaps it was too good?
2. Through examining the computer which controls the elevator, you have found which floor of HQ the spy works on. The floor is also a word which appears in the first line of David Bowie's "Space Oddity". Which floor?

Answer: Ground

As in "This is Ground Control to Major Tom".
3. An informant reveals that the spy was recruited by the enemy while studying at the same university as Bill Clinton. At which of the following did the spy study?

Answer: Oxford

Bill Clinton studied at Georgetown, Washington DC, before obtaining a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford (and then moving onto Yale).
4. Coded messages to the enemy have been intercepted on each day of the week except one, and you deduce that this must be the Spy's day off work. This day of the week is also a character from "The Addams Family" - which day?

Answer: wednesday

The Addams daughter, Wednesday, was marvellously played by Christina Ricci in 2 films of the 90's, before the actress lost her way and joined the cast of Ally McBeal.
5. Sophisticated analysis of the spy's codemaking techniques reveals their nationality - the same as football (or soccer) player Patrick Vieira.

Answer: French

World cup winner Vieira, one of the the world's best midfielders, is the man who set up Emmanuel Petit for the third goal of the 1998 World Cup final.
6. A single hair found in a secret dossier reveals the spy's hair colour to be the same as the surname of the actress who played opposite Patrick Swayze in "Dirty Dancing". Which hair colour?

Answer: Grey

When Jennifer Grey had a big nose, she appeared in 2 major films - "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Dirty Dancing". She's now had her nose size reduced surgically, and I can't think of a single film she's been in since. There's a moral in there somewhere.
7. Intercepted Morse Code transmissions reveal the first letter of the Spy's surname. This letter looks identical to the capitalised version of the Greek letter upsilon (pronounced ipsilon). Which letter?

Answer: Y

Upsilon is pronounced Ipsilon, and is written as a u in lower case and a Y in uppercase. It is pronounced "ee" - modern Greek has three letters that are all pronounced in that way - Y, I and H.
8. Bugging the phone lines has revealed the spy's telephone extension number within HQ, and the 4 digit extension is also the title of a famous overture by Tchaikovsky. Type in the extension.

Answer: 1812

In a 1998 performance of this overture, Uruguayan musician Paolo Esperanza stuck a firecracker in his trombone to mirror the cannon shots which are such a recognisable part of the piece. He was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.
9. Finally, you have uncovered the gender of the spy, which is the same sex as the title of a 1981 John Lennon song about one of his children. Is our spy a man or a woman?

Answer: man

A beautiful song - "Beautiful Boy", about John's son Sean, was on the other side of the record 'Woman'. NB. the single was released posthumously, following Lennon's tragic death in 1980.
10. We have 10 suspects: 1. Sandy Evans the telephone operator, 2. Thomas, the director of operations from the Defence Department, 3. Alex the intern (a Harvard graduate), 4. Paddy the Irish janitor, who doesn't work Wednesdays 5. Eric, the security clearance chief, 6. Head of Foreign Affairs, Ms Jenny Young, 7. French double Agent Francois, on extension 1756, 8. Jo the translator from the top floor, 9. Mark the stenographer, who works everyday except Tuesday and 10. Jackie, a brown-haired civil servant. Who is the spy?

Answer: Eric

The spy works in Foreign affairs, which rules out Thomas. His surname begins with a Y so it can't be Sandy. Alex didn't go to Oxford, Paddy isn't French and Francois's extension is wrong. We know the spy is a man, which rules out Jenny, Jo works on the wrong floor, Mark works on Wednesdays and Jackie has the wrong colour hair. So the spy must be Eric.
