Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As an avid dog lover, it amazed me to discover that there is a "world's ugliest dog" competition. Which dog won for three years in a row from 2003-2005, but sadly died before he could compete in 2006?

Answer: Sam the Chinese crested

Yes, it's true, poor little Sam was a bit of an ugly mite! Sam lived in Santa Barbara, California. He died in November 2005, just before his 15th birthday.
2. Well, most of us that know dogs pant instead of sweat, don't we? Actually there is one main area where a dog does sweat. Where?

Answer: Its feet

Dogs sweat between their paw pads. Their sweat glands are called merocrine glands, and these are found in their foot pads. This sweating allows dogs to cool themselves. Now where do you get doggy odour eaters?
3. What do Chihuahua puppies have in common with newborn human babies?

Answer: They have a soft spot on their skull which closes with age

The soft spot has caused veterinarians some issues, as many are ignorant this breed specific issue. The soft spot on a puppy's head is called an open fontanel. The spot normally closes within one to two months of age.
4. Which American President first recommended dog licencing?

Jefferson, despite owning several sheepdogs, professed to be very anti-dog. In response to fellow landowners' calls to make pet owners liable for damage caused by their dogs (mainly to livestock), Jefferson called for licencing.

6. Where did the phrase "raining cats and dogs" originate?

Answer: In an 18th century English book

The phrase was first seen in Jonathan Swift's "A Complete Collection of Polite and Ingenious Conversation" in 1738. Apparently, many dogs and cats drowned during heavy rain, and were left lying in the gutters.

Answer: Cerberus

Cerberus is the Latinized version of the Greek Kerberos. In mythology, Cerberus watched over the gates of Hades.
8. Another dog in Greek mythology was Laelaps. He was destined to always catch his prey. This was fine until he met a fox who was destined to never be caught. Zeus wasn't happy about this, so what did he do to them?

For a while, Laelaps belonged to King Minos. Eventually, Zeus' actions made Laelaps' hunt for the fox continue forever, frozen in space for us all to see.
