Goujian (reigned 496-465 BC) was the king in the Kingdom of Yue (present-day northern Zhejiang), toward the end of the Spring and Autumn period. After he succeeded his father, he defeated the superior Wu armies led by King Helu around 496 BC. King Helu died in the battle and was succeeded by his son Fuchai (reigned 495-473 BC). In 494 BC, Goujian was utterly defeated by Fuchai when he launched an attack on Wu. Instead of taking Goujian's life, Fuchai humiliated Goujian by taking him and his wife to serve him as slaves in Wu. After serving for 3 years, Goujian was allowed to Yue. During the 3 years, Yue was run by Fan Li and Wen Zhong, two of Goujian's most trusted officials. They secretly built up the Yue armies to be ready for revenge when the opportunity arises. In 473 BC, Goujian took advantage of Fuchai's expedition to the north. He successfully led an attack on the Wu capital, killing the Wu crown prince. Fuchai was killed and his state was annexed by Yue.

After his training to be a teacher, he left for Beijing with his mentor, Yang Changji, to work in the University library as an assistant to Li Dazhao. In 1921, Li became a co-founder of the CCP with Chen Duxiu supported by the Russian communist party. Zhuge Liang (181-234) aka Kongmíng was a Chinese military engineer, strategist, statesman, and writer. He was the chief military strategist of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. He was widely recognized as the most accomplished in his era, comparable to Sun Tze. He was mainly responsible for his service to his lord Liu Bei (161-223) to secure a stronghold in Sichuan. After Liu Bei death in 223, he continued to serve his son Liu Shan (207-271). After his death in 234, Shu Han was conquered by Wei in 263.

In the spring of 1929, realizing that Jinggang mountains could not sustain enough food supply, they moved their armies of about 2,000 men to Jiangxi. Mao had to leave his infant daughter Mao Jinhua for adoption by another family. In February 1930, Mao moved to Jiangxi, and established the South-west Jiangxi Provincial Soviet Government. Jiangxi was considered a safe haven by the CCP Central Committee. In November 1929, Jiangxi was proclaimed by the Soviet Republic of China as an independent communist-governed state. Although he was the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars, due to major disagreement of the strategies with key CPC leaders, Mao lost his authority and his control of Red Army to Zhou Enlai. Mao favored a peasant movement, but the key CPC leaders under the influence of the Soviet advisers wanted to focus their efforts in the urban areas.

The Sui dynasty lasted from 518 to 618 AD. Emperor Yang aka Yang Guang (569-619) succeeded his father Emperor Wen (541-604) aka Yang Jian in 604. During his reign (604-618), he committed several large projects of which the most well known as the Grand Canal. He also ordered several military operations against Champa and Korea. The military campaigns resulted in death of thousands of Sui soldiers from malaria. The disastrous campaigns left the empire bankrupt causing the people to revolt. In 618, he was strangled to death in a coup led by his general Yuwen Huaji.

Mao had an arranged marriage by his father in 1907 when he was only 14-years old. He refused, however, to acknowledge his 17-year old wife named Luo Yixiu, who died in 1910. In 1920, he married his second wife, Yang Kaihui, the daughter of his mentor Yang Changji. Yang had three children with him - Mao Anying, Mao Anqing, and Mao Anjong. In 1927, Yang actively supported her husband's activities organizing many peasant movements in Shaoshan. In the same year, she returned to Bancang alone to organize underground activities against the KMT in Changsha. In October 1930, she and her eldest son, Mao Anying, were captured by the local KMT warlord, He Jian. She refused to denounce communism and was executed on 14 November 1930 at the age of 29 in front of her 8-year old son.

After the death of her husband, she took over the reign from her son and ruled from 15 years from 690 to 705.
