Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I found out that in the native Gaelic language Dublin is 'Dubh Linn'. This translates to the same as which British place name?

Answer: Blackpool

'Dubh' translates literally as 'black' and 'Linn' as 'pool' from Gaelic Irish into English. "White City" is, in fact, the translation of Belgrade (Beograd) from Serbian into English. London is obviously the capital of England, and Liverpool can be translated as 'Learrphoil' in Gaelic.
2. When I was in Ireland with my man, I discovered by myself two streets in Dublin that appealed very much to me, but not to him. They were Grafton Street and Henry Street. What did I find there?

Answer: Pedestrianized shopping

Henry Street is named after Henry Moore, who planned the area around O'Connell street. He was the Earl of Drogheda. Both Earl Street and Moore Street are also named after him. Grafton Street is named after Henry FitzRoy, the first Duke of Grafton. He was the son, albeit illegitimate, of Charles II of England. Both streets are visited by millions of tourists looking for a bargain each year.
3. My favorite Dublin-born author wrote, amongst many masterful works, 'Dubliners'. Who is he?

Answer: James Joyce

James Joyce believed that the description in his writing of Dublin could be used to rebuild the city 'brick by brick' if it were ever destroyed. James Joyce first published 'Dubliners' in 1914, and it was a collection of stories about middle-class life in the city of Dublin.
4. What is the oldest university in Dublin?

Answer: Trinity College

Trinity College was founded in the year 1592. It was founded under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. It was primarily a Protestant college when founded. For example, up until 1966, Catholics required a special dispensation from their own archbishop in order to study at Trinity without being excommunicated.

The University of Limerick isn't in Dublin. Dublin City University was founded in 1975, and University College Dublin started life in the mid-19th century.
5. Ireland's national television company, RTE, is based in Dublin. In which part of Dublin is it located?

Answer: Donnybrook

RTE are the initials for Raidio Teilifis Eireann, which translates as Radio Television Ireland. It was founded in 1926. It is amongst the oldest continuous broadcast companies in the world. Programmes that have featured on it include 'The Late Late Show', 'Glenroe' and 'Fair City'.
6. Which of these is not a soccer club from Dublin?

Answer: Finn Harps

Finn Harps is a club from county Donegal. Shelbourne have played their home games at Tolka Park in Drumcondra, Bohemian F.C. have played at Dalymount Park in Phibsborough and Shamrock Rovers have played home games at the Tallaght stadium in Dublin. Each of the clubs have played in the premier division of Irish football.
7. A famous Irish poet and playwright was born and raised at 21 Westland Row in Dublin. Today, at this address, you will find which of the following?

Answer: The Oscar Wilde Centre

Oscar was born at the address in 1854. He was an extremely prominent playwright, poet and aesthete. His many works included 'The Importance of Being Earnest', 'De Profundis', and my personal favorite, 'Salome'. He tragically died an early death on November 30, 1900, aged 46, and was buried at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
8. Trinity Library does NOT contain which of the following famous manuscripts?

Answer: The Book of Tullamore

It is disputable as to where the "Book of Durrow" was actually crafted, with Iona, an island belonging to Scotland, and Durrow Abbey in County Offaly both having a claim to have written it. It is a seventh century manuscript. The "Book of Armagh" was written primarily in Latin and dates back to the ninth century.

The "Book of Kells" is perhaps the most famous treasure that Trinity Library possesses, and it contains magnificent artwork. Who, when and where the manuscript was produced is debatable.
9. Which of these canals flows through Dublin?

Answer: Grand Canal

The Grand Canal meets up with Dublin's main river, the Liffey, at Ringsend in the city. The Grand Canal was one of two canals first proposed in 1715 to link the Liffey with both the Shannon and the Barrow rivers. The other canal, on the north side of Dublin, is called the Royal Canal.
10. A canal that shares its name with a major canal in Venice flows through Dublin. It also flows through my favorite town in Ireland. Tell me which town it is.

Answer: Tullamore

The Grand Canal meets up with the longest river in Ireland, The Shannon at Shannon Harbor in County Offaly. Tullamore, along with being the home of the famous whiskey Tullamore Dew, is also the county town of Offaly. Tulloamore boasts such surroundings as Charleville Castle and the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

It hosted the national Fleadh Ceoil music festival for three consecutive years, starting in 2007 and is where my husband is from.
