Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. April 31st is the feast day of St. Bono in Ireland.

Answer: False

Regrettably we don't have a feast day for St. Bono (yet.) Bono, the front man of U2 took his name from an advertisement for hearing aids. And we only have thirty days in April. If Bono was to have a feast day maybe a 31st day could be created in April
2. Of the thirty two counties in Ireland, which one of them shares its name with a witty five line poem?

Answer: Limerick

The origin is debatable. In a funny limerick the first, second and fifth lines rhyme. The third and fourth rhyming separately.
A clever young quizzer from Stoke,
Thought some FT questions a joke,
She is not laughing now,
A crease on her brow,
Some answers they caused her to choke.
3. I bought my first U2 album in 1980 on vinyl. At what RPM speed would I have played it?

Answer: Thirty three and one third

33 1/3 was the speed on record decks for L.P. (long playing) records. It still sounds as good today. Vinyl was, of course largely phased out by the arrival of the compact disk. Cassette tapes also helped create the availability of music on the move.
4. Richard Chamberlain was born in 1934. He played a doctor in a television series made by MGM. This MD shared a name with which Irish county?

Answer: Kildare

"Dr Kildare" ran from 1961 to 1966. Indeed, this was Richard's big break. It was bound to be lucky as the series shares its name with the most pleasant county in Ireland. Kildare is the centre of horse racing activity in Ireland; it has three racecourses, numerous training establishments, and the National Stud.
5. What item, banned by the Irish Government on May 25th 1935, contributed to the large population explosion in Ireland?

Answer: Contraceptives

The Irish have had a mixed history with contraceptives of all types. Even as recently as 1971, Irish women caused a huge controversy by buying contraceptives in Northern Ireland and bringing them by train to Dublin, in an incident called the Condom Train.
6. In 1936, Ireland's national airline began flying people from Ireland to Britain. What is it called?

Answer: Aer Lingus

In recent years Ryanair has become much bigger than Aer Lingus. But the national airline's green livery, with shamrock symbol, is known worldwide
7. On May 28th 1937, this gentleman became Prime Minister of the UK. He would govern during an important period of Irish history. He sought to remove the remaining ties between Ireland and the U.K. Who was he?

Answer: Neville Chamberlain

Chamberlain sought to make agreements with Ireland; he did however want Irish support in the British war effort. The links established in conference with Eamon De Valera in 1938 benefited Irish exports for many years. He died in 1940, during World War II.
8. In 1938, Ireland's first President was inaugurated. Who was this reclusive gentleman?

Answer: Douglas Hyde

A reputed scholar, Hyde lived from 1860 - 1949. He lent his name to an art gallery opened in Trinity College in 1978.
9. In 1939, Ireland adopted a neutral position on WWII. What was this period of great upheaval commonly known as in Ireland?

Answer: The Emergency

Incredibly, legislation ending this period did not come into force until 1976. It was a time of great hardship for many Irish people, and made the government highly unpopular.
10. This Irish singer, born in Belfast in 1935, has a connection with a suitable fortieth anniversary gift. Who is it?

Answer: Ruby Murray

Ruby is the symbol of the fortieth anniversary. Ruby Murray had several hits in the UK top ten in the 1950s, the most notable being "Softly, Softly".
