Bodega means "storeroom" or "cellar" in Spanish. The key features of bodegas, or any corner store, are being located in neighborhoods where people live and being open long hours, often 24 hours. Bodegas blossomed in NYC in the 1940s and 1950s, when a wave of Puerto Rican immigrants settled in the area.
