Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do chicken parts dressed in hot sauce served with blue cheese dressing, the NHL hockey team in Detroit, Michigan, and an American TV sitcom from the 1990s set at an airport called "Tom Nevers Field" in Nantucket, Massachusetts, have in common?

Answer: wings

The name "buffalo wings" does not suggest that these chicken wings taste or look like they came from a bison, but rather that they originated in Buffalo, New York. The Detroit Red Wings have played in the National Hockey League since 1926. Their red-and-white uniforms reinforce the team name. "Wings" was part of a trio of television programmes (with "Cheers" and "Fraser") created and produced by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee.

3. What do the site of the original Olympic Games, a German Opel motorcar mass-produced 1935-40, 1947-1953 and 1976-1970, and a brewery in Tumwater, Washington, have in common?

Answer: Olympia

The original Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. They were both religious and athletic in nature. The modern Olympics resumed in 1890 or 1894 or 1896, depending upon who one asks. The Opel Olympia was a family car produced by the German automaker Opel from 1935 to 1940, from 1947 to 1953 and again from 1967 to 1970. Unibody construction reduced the weight of the car compared to others.

The Olympia Brewing Company (1896-2003) built a brewery in Tumwater, Washington, U.S.

The Schmidt Family operated that brewery to produce Olympia Beer until the sale of the business to Pabst Brewing Company in 1983.

4. What do Charlie Chan's creator Earl Derr Biggers, a classic list of deadly sins, and a former-Borg character played by Jeri Ryan on "Star Trek: Voyager," have in common?

Answer: seven

Earl Derr Biggers wrote the Charlie Chan mystery series. He also wrote a much different novel, "Seven Keys to Baldpate," which George M. Cohan turned into a successful stage play in 1913, Lux Radio Theatre turned into a radio play in 1938, and Lew Landers turned into a motion picture in 1947. It involves a cast of characters stranded in a snowed-in country lodge.

The seven deadly sins are also called the seven capital vices or the seven cardinal sins. There are variations but the most common list includes pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. Such lists were composed by monastics and spiritual directors from the immediate subapostolic era forward.

The Star Trek character Seven of Nine was born Annika Hansen but her name was changed to Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One, when she was assimilated by the Borg. Jeri Ryan's portrayal of this "recovered" Borg was the subject of considerable controversy, given that she wore a skin-tight, very revealing costume. This was seen by some as a blatant ploy to attract 18-35 year old males to the show's audience.

5. If you were given a pitaya, what would you do with it?

Answer: Eat it. It's a fruit.

The pitaya is a delicious fruit that grows on a type of cacti. In many countries it is more commonly known as dragonfruit, and is also called a strawberry pear. The fruit comes in many varieties, some sweet and some sour. The most common varieties are sweet with either white or red flesh.

6. High-speed photography, conducted at MIT in 2020, showed that particulates from a sneeze can be projected how far?

Answer: Up to 27 feet (8.23m)

It was previously believed that a sneeze carried approximately 6 feet. But in 2020 (with its high prevalence of Covid-19), it was discovered at MIT using high-speed photography that particulates from a sneeze could travel at up to 100 mph (161 kph) up to 27 feet, and also that they could remain in the air for minutes, not seconds. Handy to know in a pandemic!

7. Which number is associated with the element hydrogen, Commander Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Billy Martin's number for the Yankees, and songs from "A Chorus Line"?

Answer: 1 (one)

The element hydrogen has the atomic number of "1". On "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Captain Picard often referred to Commander Riker as "Number One" (or first officer). Billy Martin's number of "1" as a player and manager of the New York Yankees was retired by the team in 1986. The song "One" appeared twice in the 1975 musical "A Chorus Line".

Answer: They are varieties of wine grapes.

Malbec is a purple grape variety from Cahors in France, grown also in Argentina, the United States and Australia. Barbarossa is a red-pink grape from Italy; its name means "red beard" and derives from Frederick I, the Holy Roman Emperor in the 12th century, who had a red beard. Answer: words

A logophile is a person with a love of words. The word is formed from the Greek 'logos' meaning word and 'phile' meaning love of a subject. The humorous 'logorrhea' is related and means 'flow of words' for someone who speaks too many of them, often in an uninterrupted manner!
