Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which teen heartthrob of the '90s starred in the 2006 movie "Blood Diamond"?

Answer: Leonardo DiCaprio

"Blood Diamond" was set in Sierra Leone and its title refers to the dangerous diamond trade in Africa, in which warlords profited off of diamonds mined by underpaid and overworked miners. DiCaprio starred as a gunrunner and diamond smuggler.

Leonardo DiCaprio was a favourite among teen girls in the 1990s. He joined the cast of the TV show "Growing Pains" in 1991 and starred in films such as "The Basketball Diaries" (1995) and "Romeo + Juliet" (1996). He really became a worldwide star after "Titanic" (1997) and has since starred in many different movies, showing off his varied acting talents.
2. In which sport is a diamond an important feature?

Answer: Baseball

In baseball, the field, especially the infield, is called a diamond because of the shape of the bases - if you mentally connect home, 1st, 2nd and 3rd bases, they form a diamond shape. In addition to these four bases, the infield also includes the pitcher's mound and the batter's and catcher's boxes.
3. In many parts of the world, it is customary for a man to present his sweetheart with a diamond ring when asking her for her hand in marriage. In North America, what has typically been considered as a guideline for how much the man should spend on an engagement ring?

Answer: 2-3 months' salary

In many Western cultures, the custom is that only women wear engagement rings, and the ring is worn on the left hand. While it is traditional that the ring be offered at the time of proposal, it has also become common in more recent years that the engaged couple select and purchase the ring together. In other cultures, both men and women wear rings as a symbol of their pending marriage. In other cultures still, the engagement ring may be worn on the right hand, or another gift entirely might be presented to the bride-to-be.

The custom of giving an engagement ring can be traced back for centuries, but diamond rings purportedly became the most popular engagement gift in North America in the early 20th century. The guideline of spending two to three months' wages on a ring was started by the De Beers diamond company around the same time, in an advertisement campaign. In 2007, "People" magazine reported that the average price paid for engagement rings in the United States was $2100 (USD).
4. In a 1973 song, which band advised against the Queen of Diamonds, stating that "the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet"?

Answer: The Eagles

The song is "Desperado", from The Eagles' 1973 album, also called "Desperado". Despite never being officially released as a single, it's one of the bands' more well-known songs and has appeared on many compilation albums. The full lyric is "Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy. She'll beat you if she's able. You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet."
5. Silver is 25 years, Gold is 50. Which anniversary is traditionally one of the Diamond anniversaries?

Answer: 60 years

The 75th anniversary was traditionally the Diamond anniversary in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Since the beginning of the 20th century, however, the 60th anniversary has also been recognized as a Diamond anniversary, since Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee after 60 years of reigning in 1897.

In 1986 and 2006, Japan and Thailand respectively observed Diamond Jubilees for their monarchs after 60 years in power. In both the United Kingdom and the United States, diamonds are now considered the traditional gift for a 60th wedding anniversary, and either diamonds or gold may be given for the 75th anniversary.
6. Which androgynous rock star released the album "Diamond Dogs"?

Answer: David Bowie

"Diamond Dogs" was recorded and released by David Bowie in 1974. The album's content was influenced by George Orwell's novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four"; a couple of song titles from the album, for example, were "1984" and "Big Brother". The album cover featured Bowie painted as half-man, half-dog.

The original cover art clearly had the man-dog's genitalia painted in, but this was airbrushed out after only a small amount of original covers were released into the market. The few original covers out there in the world are very valuable collector items.
7. Which 1992 Disney hero was described in his movie as a "diamond in the rough"?

Answer: Aladdin

In "Aladdin", the title character was recruited by the evil Jafar to enter the Cave of Wonders to retrieve the genie's magic lamp, because the Cave of Wonders would only allow "the diamond in the rough" to enter. When Jafar was denied entry, he found out with help of the Sultan's magic ring who could enter to get the lamp and found Aladdin. Because Aladdin's monkey, Abu, didn't follow the rules to not touch anything except the lamp, they barely made it out of the Cave - because they still had the lamp in their possession, they were able to use Genie to get out of the collapsed Cave.
8. You'll come across the term 'black diamond' if you participate in which of these outdoor activities?

Answer: Alpine skiing

'Black Diamond' represents ski runs that are steep and less groomed, making them more difficult to navigate. Clearly representing the difficulty of runs tells novice skiers which runs to avoid; a beginning skier would most likely have great difficulty with a black diamond and could very possibly get hurt if they attempted it. Easier slopes are marked a green circle (for the easiest) or a blue square (for an intermediate run).

There is also the double black diamond rating, for even more difficult trails that only very experienced skiers should attempt.
9. Which of these is NOT a song by Neil Diamond?

Answer: Happy Together

"Forever in Blue Jeans" was a 1979 single for Neil Diamond; not surprisingly, it has been used over the years in more than one ad campaign for denim companies. "Sweet Caroline" was released as a single in 1969; Diamond revealed years later that he titled the song for Caroline Kennedy. He performed the song at her 50th birthday party in 2007. "Red, Red Wine" was a 1968 single for Diamond. UB40 covered the song in the '80s; their version was a number-one hit in the United Kingdom.

"Happy Together" was a 1967 single by The Turtles.
10. Actor and stand-up comedian Dustin Diamond starred in which of these TV franchises from 1988 to 2000?

Answer: Saved by the Bell

Dustin Diamond played the nerdy and lovable Samuel "Screech" Powers in all of the "Saved by the Bell" shows, starting with the short-lived "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" series in 1988, continuing on to "Saved by the Bell" until 1993, "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" for the one season it aired in 1994, and then finally "Saved by the Bell: The New Class" until it ended in 2000. He also starred in all of the various TV movies based on "Saved by the Bell". Diamond was the only main cast member to stick around for all of the series, though closely followed by Dennis Haskins as school principal Mr. Belding, who only had an infrequent guest role in "The College Years".

Since "The New Class" ended, Dustin Diamond hasn't been up to a whole lot, other than a few movie cameos and some reality show appearances.
