Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Canary
Answer: Yellows
'Canary' was one of the 12 colours introduced by Crayola in 1998 to complete the 120 colour box. In the yellow hues palette, its hexadecimal colour is #FFFF99l not as bright as some of the other yellows. Another new colour to be introduced in the yellow hue range is 'cornsilk' reflecting the colour corn silks turn when ripening.
2. Orchid
Answer: Purples
'Orchid' replaced the clumsily-named 'Medium Red-Violet', with hexadecimal make-up #E29CD2. It was introduced in 1949 as "Medium Red-Violet", but its name was changed in 1958. It falls into the purple-hued group.
3. Asparagus
Answer: Greens
Introduced in 1993, when the colour count available reached 96, the hexadecimal code for 'Asparagus' is #7BA05B. It was one of twelve colours developed in 1992 and named by public competition.
4. Wild Watermelon
Answer: Reds
There's a series of 'wild' colours in the palette - 'Wild Blue Yonder', 'Wild Wasabi' and 'Wild Watermelon' among them. The latter is one of the fluorescent colours, with a hexadecimal (web) code of #FD5B78. It's the same colour as 'Ultra Red' that was available from 1972-1990, when it was renamed and the fluorescents became known as 'neons'. It is also one of the 'Magic Scents' range.
5. Wisteria
Answer: Purples
Another of the purple-hued colours, 'Wisteria' (#C9A0DC) is a lovely light shade of purple and in the 'Magic Scents' range has a lilac smell. It was introduced in 1993, available in the 32, 64 and 120 box-size ranges.
6. Dandelion
Answer: Yellows
'Dandelion' (hexadecimal #FED85D) is a friendly yellow-hued colour. In the 'Color 'n' Smell' box, it's called 'Banana'; I'm sorry to say that as part of the 'Magic Scents' range it is called 'Wash the Dog' and as part of the 'Silly Scents' range, it's called 'Gargoyle Gas'. Introduced in 1990, it was retired in 2017.
7. Mauvelous
Answer: Reds
As a pinky-orange colour, Mauvelous is in the Red hue group. Its hexadecimal code is #F091A9. The colour was introduced in 1993 in the 64-colour collection.
8. Eggplant
Answer: Purples
Eggplant is one of the purples with a hexadecimal code of #614051. It was one of the new colours introduced in the 120-count assortment, along with Manatee, Blue Bell, and Cotton Candy, among others.
9. Jazzberry Jam
Answer: Reds
Jazzberry Jam (#A50B5E) was introduced in 2003. Along with Jazzberry Jam, Mango Tango, Inchworm, and Wild Blue Yonder, were introduced to supplement the 96-count box, creating a special 100-count box to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Crayola Crayons in 2003.
10. Inchworm
Answer: Greens
Inchworm is a bright lime green colour that was introduced in 2003. Its web colour is #B0E313 and it was chosen as a replacement colour for the revamp undertaken for the company's centenary celebrations in 2003 and included in 120-count collection.
11. Almond
Answer: Yellows
Almond was created in 1998, its hexadecimal code being #EED9C4. With Canary, Fern, Manatee, Blue Bell and others, Almond was included in the first 120-count box of colours. There are numerous variations of Almond in the 'Colors of the World' collection.
12. Shadow
Answer: Greens
A brown-green colour and one of the green hues (#837050 hexadecimal), 'Shadow' was introduced into the standard palette in 1998, only available in the 120-pack. They produce several packets of 'specialty' colours such as 'pastel', 'colours of the world' and 'bold and bright'.
