Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a Middle Eastern country with a black, white and red flag. I'll give you a hint: the capital is Sana'a. What country has such a flag?

Answer: Yemen

How many Yemeni does it take to raise the red, white and black horizontally striped Yemen flag? Many, many Yemeni. The current flag was adopted in 1990 when North Yemen and South Yemen unified. The red symbolizes blood shed, the white symbolizes hope and the black symbolizes an end to past strife. Red, black, white and green are all colors that are linked to Islam. As symbols of Arab liberation the flags of Egypt, Iraq, Sudan and Syria all share the red, white and black horizontal stripes of Yemen's flag.
2. There is a wireless company with headquarters in New York City that has a corporate logo in red, black and white (although sometimes the logo is just white letters on red). The company sponsors a sports arena in Washington DC as well as a PGA golf tournament in Hilton Head, SC and a winter sports complex at Lake Placid, NY. Which telecommunications giant is this?

Answer: Verizon

The logo says "Verizon" in red and black letters with a red checkmark over them on a white background. The company started in 1983 as Bell Atlantic. Today the company offers telephone, internet, TV and wireless services and is present in over 150 countries. Verizon is currently second in the US behind AT&T in number of cellular telephone subscribers. They are tenth in the world. China Mobile leads that list with 350 million subscribers (million with an "m"). Verizon has 64 million.
Do you suppose when a vegetable wants to call a begonia it can use a Verizon phone and cauliflower?
3. From 1988 to 1992 a US real estate tycoon operated an airline with a black, white and red livery. He named the airline after himself. What airline was this?

Answer: Trump Shuttle

Donald Trump bought Eastern Shuttle in 1988. The airline had a fleet of 17 Boeing 727s and operated between New York City, Boston and Washington DC. Flights left every hour. It turned out to be a very bad time to get into the airline business. Jet fuel prices rose and rose and ate up all the profits. Trump defaulted on his loan and the company was taken over by creditors who sold it to US Airways.
4. Steve Bartkowski, Deion Sanders, Tommy Nobis and Michael Vick all played for which National Football League team that has black, white and red uniforms?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons debuted in 1966 with red helmets, white pants, and white or black jerseys. Their uniforms have changed several times over the years including a period where they wore silver pants. The current uniform was adopted in 2004 and features a black helmet, red jersey and white pants. The alternate jersey is black.
If you get your NFL information from watching the Super Bowl you might be excused if you got this question wrong. The Falcons have had only one Super Bowl appearance in the first 45 years of their existence.
5. The rose-breasted grosbeak is a black, white and red bird. Which sex of this bird has that coloring, though?

Answer: Male

Bright coloring never helped me when I was single but it apparently works for male grosbeaks as well as for the males of several other bird species. Being more brightly colored helps the male grosbeak attract a female. Being easier to see to other birds of the same species lets the other birds know that a territory is already occupied. And being duller in color helps the female hide from predators - especially while nesting. Female rose-breasted grosbeaks are more gray and do not have the red breast.
6. There is an island country in the Caribbean whose capital is Port of Spain that also has a black, white and red flag. What country is this?

Answer: Trinidad and Tobago

Their flag is red with a black stripe running diagonally through it. The black stripe is trimmed with white on either side. The red symbolizes the sun or courage. The black symbolizes earth or dedication. The white symbolizes water or purity and equality. It was adopted in 1962 when the country gained independence from Great Britain.
You would think that Trinidad and Tobago would be a major exporter of toboggans but they aren't. Instead they export a lot of oil and gas.
7. Cyprinus carpio is almost a staple in the decor of Chinese restaurants. What is the common name of this fish which may be black, white and red as well as many other combinations of colors?

Answer: Koi

Koi are carp which have been bred to be colorful. They do best in outdoor ponds but are often seen in large tanks inside Chinese restaurants. "Showa Sanke" are the black, white and red specimens of koi. Each color combination has a different name. To maintain coloration, koi must be bred with koi. Koi which are released to the wild revert to normal gray carp coloration within a few generations from breeding with regular carp.
A person who makes wooden aquariums for Chinese restaurants may be known as a koi-penter.
8. In 1985 Nike came out with a shoe named after a star basketball player from the Chicago Bulls. He was #23 in your program but #1 in many a sports fan's heart. What model of shoe was this that was black, white and red?

Answer: Air Jordan

Michael Jordan was just a rookie in the National Basketball Association when Nike signed him to an endorsement contract. They designed a shoe to capitalize on his name--the Air Jordan AJ1. It was one of the first, if not the first, basketball shoe ever marketed that was not white or black. It was red and black with white laces. At the time it was pretty expensive at $65 but it was the shoe to have for many young men in America. The NBA banned the shoes as "too colorful". Jordan continued to wear them with Nike picking up the $5000 per game fine Jordan was assessed by the league.
Air Jordans are still being sold only they now are available from Jordan Brand, a Nike subsidiary. They retail for about $120.
Jordan was not the first basketball star to have a shoe named after him. Back in the 1940s Kinney Shoes put out a Joe Lapchick model. They sold for about $3.10.
9. The Devils of the National Hockey League have uniforms in black, white and red. What letter(s) are on their jersey?

Answer: NJ for New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils were named after the legendary Jersey Devil, a flying, hoofed monster. The team moved to Newark in 1982 from Colorado. For the first ten years of their existence the jerseys were white with green and red stripes and red with green and white stripes.

Many felt they looked "Christmas-y". In the 1990s those jerseys were out and the current jerseys were in. They are now white with black and red stripes and red with black and white stripes. No matter what color their jerseys are the team has been devilishly good, winning nine division championships, four conference championships and three Stanley Cups since moving to New Jersey in 1982.
10. Coca-Cola has a product in a black, white and red can. What product is this?

Answer: Coke Zero

Almost zero calories (.75 per liter) in a black can with "Coca-Cola" in red and "Zero" in white. Coke Zero was launched in 2005 by marketing executives at Coca-Cola who felt that men were not interested in soft drinks billed as "diet". So they changed the formulation of Diet Coke and called it Coke Zero. In some places it is colloquially called "Bloke Coke".
