Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For Children: What colour is Clifford, the enormous canine hero of a series of books by Norman Bridwell?

Answer: Red

Clifford is the hero of over fifty books by Norman Bridwell, from 'Clifford the Big Red Dog' to 'Clifford Celebrates Hanukkah'. This gentle giant is owned by a little girl called Emily Elizabeth, who likes to ride on his back, and who is named for Norman Bridwell's daughter.

The books were adapted into a TV series from 2000 to 2003. Clifford is also the mascot for the Scholastic publishing house.
2. Sport: This Toronto major league baseball team plays at the Rogers Centre and won the World Series in 1992. They are named after a type of bird, the jay - but what kind of jay?

Answer: Blue

The Toronto Blue Jays play in blue, red and white, and share their main team colour with two fellow local teams - the Maple Leafs, who play ice hockey, and the Canadian football team, the Argonauts. Founded in 1977, they won their first title in 1985. Second baseman Roberto Alomar and pitcher Phil Niekro are among the Blue Jays to have been elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
3. Science & Technology: What "colour" fever is spread by mosquito bites, is common in tropical areas, and had a major outbreak in the US in 1793?

Answer: Yellow

Yellow fever is so called because one of its symptoms is yellow skin, caused by damage to the liver (see also: jaundice). It is a viral disease most commonly spread by the bite of infected female mosquitoes. It mainly occurs in tropical parts of Africa and South America, and is thought to have spread to Europe and the Americas via port cities, as a result of the slave trade.

The 1793 epidemic occurred in Philadelphia, claiming over 5000 victims, and only ended with the arrival of frost in October, which killed off the mosquitoes carrying the disease.
4. Movies: What colour was the submarine in the animated film of the same name, based around the songs of the Beatles?

Answer: Yellow

"We all live in a yellow submarine," sang the Beatles in 1966. They did not actually appear in the film, but several of their songs did, such as 'Hey Bulldog' and 'All You Need is Love'. The story centres around the magical world of Pepperland, which is attacked by a gang of music-hating aliens, the Blue Meanies.

The Beatles travel to Pepperland in a yellow submarine, passing through several bizarre seas, and use their music to free the people of Pepperland and drive the Blue Meanies away.
5. Celebrities: What is the first name of Beyonce Knowles' and Jay-Z's daughter, born on 7th January 2012?

Answer: Blue

Or, to give her her full name, Blue Ivy Carter. Beyonce announced her pregnancy after performing 'Love on Top' at the 2011 MTV Music Awards. The announcement caused massive waves across social media, earning a spot in the Guinness Book of Records for 'most tweets per second recorded for a single event'.

She has appeared on albums by both her parents, on 'Legacy' on Jay-Z's album '44', and can be heard trying to pronounce her mother's name on 'Blue' on Beyonce's self-titled album.
6. Music: What colour were the onions in the instrumental piece by Booker T & the MGs?

Answer: Green

Booker T & the MGs were the Stax label's house band, performing with the likes of Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding. 'Green Onions' was released in 1962, originally as a B-side to 'Behave Yourself', and then as an A-side. The title apparently comes from green onions being the 'nastiest thing I could think of', according to Booker T Jones, though other sources claim it was named after a cat called Green Onions.

The use of the piece in 'Quadrophenia' helped make it popular in the UK in 1979.
7. Television: The characters Arnold Rimmer, Dave Lister, Kryten and the Cat feature in a sci-fi / comedy series named after a certain type of dwarf star. What colour is the 'Dwarf' in question?

Answer: Red

Altogether now: 'It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere...' 'Red Dwarf' was based on the books by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, and follows the adventures of Earth native and general waster, Dave Lister (Craig Charles), as he joins the mining ship Red Dwarf. Lister is the sole survivor of an accident that wipes out the rest of the ship's crew while he is in stasis, and discovers that he has been in stasis for three million years, during which time the human race has died out. His crew mates are Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie), a hologram of one of the dead crew; the Cat (Danny John-Jules), a feline humanoid descended from Lister's cat Frankenstein; and Kryten (Robert Llewellyn), an android.

The series ran from 1988 to 1999, and returned in 2012 after the 2008 'Back to Earth' special.
8. Humanities: If you are good at gardening, what colour fingers are you supposed to have, according to a British idiom?

Answer: Green

The origins of the expression are unclear, but one suggestion by the Word Detective blog is that the phrase became popularised by a wartime radio programme, 'In Your Garden', and that it refers to gardeners' hands being turned green by contact with plants. Must be all that chlorophyll. The American English equivalent would be 'green thumb'.
9. Hobbies: What colour tea is made from Camellia sinensis leaves, is used in Chinese medicine, and has varieties in Japan known as matcha and sencha?

Answer: Green

Originally from China, green tea is a type of tea where the leaves have not been subjected to the withering and oxidation process, where excess water is removed from the leaves and the leaves are left to dry out. Matcha is green tea which is grown under shade before the leaves are plucked; they are then ground into a fine powder.

It is a popular flavour in Japan for sweets such as Pocky and KitKats. Sencha is the most common variety found in Japan.
10. Geography: One of the tributaries of the river Nile is known as the White Nile. What 'colour' is the other tributary?

Answer: Blue

Not to be confused with the Scottish pop band of the same name, the Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana in Ethiopia, and joins the White Nile at Khartoum in Sudan. It gets its name from the silt from the Ethiopian highlands that falls into the water during summer months, turning the water a dark, almost black colour.

It is a major source of power for Sudan, and is also used for irrigation purposes as part of the Gezira Scheme, where the water is diverted into various canals and used to help grow cotton in the Sudanese state of Al-Jazirah.
