Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are four provinces in Ireland. Which of these is not one?

Answer: Ennis

The fourth province is Ulster.
2. "Northern Ireland" and Ulster are often used interchangeably. However only six of the nine counties of Ulster make up Northern Ireland. Which of these is *not* in Northern Ireland?

Answer: Donegal

Donegal is unique in that it is almost completely isolated from the rest of the Irish Republic, although it does touch Counties Sligo and Leitrim. It is known for its lovely houses and hospitable residents. Donegal is in north-west Ireland.
3. What are you being offered if someone asks if you would like a bit o' Liffey Water?

Answer: Guinness

Some say it is the water that makes Guinness so unique. I have my doubts, but they're sure doing something right!
4. Which Irish band has a whole pub in the town of Tuam dedicated to their music, them bein' the hometown boys and all?

Answer: The Saw Doctors

I never got to visit that pub, but if the joyful spirit of their music is any indication, it must be a great place to hang out.
5. Which of these castles is in a town which is also sung about in a very popular traditional song?

Answer: Carrickfergus

"I wish I was in Carrickfergus / Only for nights in Ballygrand..." A very beautiful and sad song. The castle is very cool, too!
6. In many Irish songs and stories, we hear of a Shillelagh, (pronounced shi-LAY-lee). What on earth is a Shillelagh?

Answer: A wooden club

My personal favorite mention of this is in "The Rocky Road to Dublin", which has been called a sort of Irish rap. If you haven't heard this, it's well worth checking out!
7. While the Cornish pasty has become familiar to natives and tourists alike, the Irish pasty is quite different. What is it?

Answer: A batter shell filled with potatos and onions

Often served with chips, this is not a meal for a person on a diet! But what a lovely splurge!
8. One of the most beautiful trips you can take in Ireland is a drive up the Antrim Coast. Which of these is not something you will see if you take this little journey?

Answer: The Mountains of Mourne

The Mountains are equally beautiful, but they are a bit further south, in County Down. By the way, the Rope Bridge is an adventure not to be missed, if you are not too faint of heart! The Antrim Coast is in Northern Ireland.
9. Every year, many people make a pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick, also known as Patrick's Peak, where the patron saint of Ireland is said to have called the faithful to pray. Which county is home to this holy mountain?

Answer: Mayo

The Saw Doctors have written a song called "The Green and Red of Mayo", which, like most of their songs, is totally uplifting. It is a little-known, but beautiful county.
10. On which date do the Orangemen of Northern Ireland celebrate the winning of the Battle of the Boyne?

Answer: 12 July

This was a day of great tension during the years of the Troubles. Many people still go on holiday during the week of the 12th, but in recent years, parades have been peaceful for the most part.
