Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone" was sung by the Kingston Trio; Peter, Paul and Mary; the Brothers Four; Sonny and Cher; Reba McEntire; Jackie DeShannon; Elvis Presley; Rosanne Cash; and Joan Baez. What is the name of this sad song about someone who misses home?

Answer: 500 Miles

The authorship of "500 Miles" is disputed and unknown with any certainty. It may have derived from earlier folk music sung for a century before this version was recorded and a copyright granted.
2. At the end of the 1939 film version of "The Wizard of Oz", who does Dorothy Gale say she will miss the most of the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman?

Answer: The Scarecrow

In the movie, Dorothy says she will miss the Scarecrow the most because she has been with him the longest and they have been through so much together. In the 1900 edition of the book, she doesn't say she will miss one more than another.
3. In Altdorf in Switzerland, there stands a statue of William Tell and his son Walter. Tell is highly regarded as a symbol of Swiss patriotism. What is it that William Tell missed that makes him a legend in his country?

Answer: he missed his son's head and hit instead an apple with a bolt from his crossbow

The legend of William Tell, reputed to be an expert with a crossbow, holds that he was compelled to shoot an apple off his son's head or forfeit both their lives. His crime was refusing to bow to the Austrian emperor's hat which had been raised on a pole in the square in Altdorf.
4. Singer Tony Bennett, a longtime resident of New York City, left a very important part of his anatomy in another city and missed it/them like crazy. According to the song which he recorded in 1962, in which location could he find it/them and be reunited?

Answer: I Left My Heart in San Francisco

"I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was written in 1952 by two songwriters who moved from San Francisco to Brooklyn. Bennett's recording won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, and it became his signature song.
5. Mark Twain said a lot of clever things, and thankfully a great many of them have been written down. Complete this statement, reputed to have been said by Twain: "Out of all the things I have lost, I miss my ___ the most".

Answer: mind

This quotation is sometimes attributed to Ozzy Osborne, but he is unlikely to have been the first to say it. The quotation appears in the 1995 movie "Hackers" where Cereal Killer attributes it to Osborne but that is not much of an authority.
6. These words have been recorded by many singers: "Are you lonesome tonight? Do you miss me tonight? Are you sorry we drifted apart"? Whose 1960 recording of this song, written in 1926, took it to Number 81 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All Time?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Roy Turk and Lou Handman wrote this song, which was first recorded in 1927. Al Jolson recorded it in 1950, Jaye P. Morgan recorded it in 1959, Frank Sinatra in 1962, Doris Day in 1967, Donny Osmond in 1973 and Connie Francis in 1989. Elvis' recording was the most popular version.
7. In the very beginning of Homer's "Odyssey", Athena persuades Zeus to bring Odysseus home, despite Calypso's wishes to have him stay on her own island forever. What does Athena say that evokes the pity of Zeus for Odysseus?

Answer: that Odysseus "longs for his wife and his homecoming"

According to Homer, Odysseus was tormented by his absence from his wife and son. Athena, who had a remarkably positive disposition toward Odysseus, wanted to help him return because he missed his wife, family, home and city so much.
8. What is the meaning of the common expression "to miss the boat"?

Answer: to be tardy in seizing an opportunity which passes out of reach

As is the case with most idioms, the original source of "missing the boat" is unknown. It is, however, of a part with other nautical idioms such as: smooth sailing, a shot across the bows, three sheets to the wind, know the ropes, and give a wide berth.
9. Psalm 137 begins, "By the waters of Babylon, we sat down and wept". For what reason were the people who originally sang this psalm crying?

Answer: They were homesick for Jerusalem and the Temple

The Psalm continues, "We wept when we remembered Zion". Zion is another name for Jerusalem and the Temple. The Babylonians had conquered Jerusalem in 586 BC and deported the people into captivity in a strange land.
10. With beautiful back-up harmony, the song begins, "Sleepless hours and dreamless nights and far aways, ooo ooo ooo, wishing you were here. Heaven knows and Lord it shows when I'm away, ooo ooo ooo, wishing you were here". Who recorded this hit song in 1973?

Answer: Chicago

Peter Cetera, the front man for Chicago, wrote "Wishing You Were Here". The song was recorded at Caribou Ranch in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Rather remarkably, three of the Beach Boys -- Al Jardine, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson -- were present and joined Chicago in singing back-up.
