The authorship of "500 Miles" is disputed and unknown with any certainty. It may have derived from earlier folk music sung for a century before this version was recorded and a copyright granted.

In the movie, Dorothy says she will miss the Scarecrow the most because she has been with him the longest and they have been through so much together. In the 1900 edition of the book, she doesn't say she will miss one more than another.

The legend of William Tell, reputed to be an expert with a crossbow, holds that he was compelled to shoot an apple off his son's head or forfeit both their lives. His crime was refusing to bow to the Austrian emperor's hat which had been raised on a pole in the square in Altdorf.
