Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry Morton Stanley was a remarkable man in many ways, but is probably best remembered for this four word phrase he is reported to have uttered in 1871; "___ ___, I presume?" Which name is missing?

Answer: Doctor Livingstone

Noted explorer and missionary Doctor David Livingstone (1813-1873) returned to explore parts of Africa in 1864. Little or no reliable information had been heard about his whereabouts for a number of years and he was presumed lost, captured by natives or even dead.
The publisher of the "New York Herald", George Bennett, commissioned Henry Stanley to try and find Livingstone. Amazingly Stanley achieved this seemingly impossible feat and found Livingstone in 1871 by the shores of Lake Tanganyika, greeting him with those immortal words.
Mungo Park (1771-1806) and Mary Kingsley (1862-1900) were both African explorers of some note.
Lord Lucan (b 1934) disappeared soon after his children's nanny had been found murdered in 1974. Despite various reports from around the world he has never been traced.
2. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were a great Anglo-American pairing of both silent and talking movies. Which of these was NOT a Laurel and Hardy movie?

Answer: Modern Times

"Modern Times" was a 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie.

"A Chump at Oxford" was released in 1940.
Stan Laurel (1892-1965) was born in Ulverston in England. He first went to The States in 1916 but it was not until 1927 that he teamed up with Oliver Hardy.
Oliver Hardy (1892-1957) was born in Harlem in Georgia, USA.
3. In which sport in North America do teams compete for the prestigious Stanley Cup?

Answer: Ice hockey

The British Governor General of Canada in the late nineteenth century was Lord Stanley of Preston (1841-1908). Both he and his family were enthusiastic supporters of (ice) hockey. Lord Stanley donated the trophy that bears his name in 1892/3. The winners in that first season were Montreal AAA.
Teams from both Canada and the United States now compete annually for the trophy.
4. Which author wrote the children's book series about "Flat Stanley"?

Answer: Jeff Brown

Poor Stanley Lambchop was flattened when a notice-board fell on top of him. He put his flattened shape to excellent use as he soon discovered that no doors could keep him out of a room, he could simply slide underneath them. Books in the series include "Stanley's Flat Again", "Stanley in Space" and "Invisible Stanley".
Author Jeff Brown was born in 1925 in New York but sadly died in 2003 without completing his final book.
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) remains an extremely popular children's author having written such classics as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Matilda" and "The Witches".

5. The conduct of Sir William Stanley and his brother Thomas were crucial factors in which important English battle?

Answer: Bosworth

The Battle of Bosworth (Field) in 1485 effectively ended the Wars of the Roses and marked the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. The reigning monarch, King Richard III had hoped that both Sir William Stanley's men and those of his brother Thomas would support the Yorkist cause but in fact William's troops were ordered to join Henry Tudor's forces while Thomas initially stood his men down.

These actions helped turn the tide of battle and ultimately sealed Richard's fate.
