Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: Which of the following birds is the only one in the genus Pyrocephalus?

Answer: Vermilion Flycatcher

Flycatchers, as a rule, have dull plumage, however, the vermilion flycatcher's colour is a vibrant red. It is often called a 'firebird'.
2. BRAIN TEASERS: Solve the following riddle. Born again, I am to be. I wasn't in "Fleetwood Mac" you see. Never in a PokéBall nor am I in football (soccer). Born again is the answer you seek.

Answer: Phoenix

The Phoenix is a symbol of rebirth "born again". Stevie Nicks can be associated with the band "Fleetwood Mac". 'Steelix' is a "Pokemon". Free kicks are awarded in football (soccer).
3. CELEBRITIES: Which of the following actors from the 1990 movie 'Fire Birds' was associated with a super hero/villain from the Marvel or DC stable of comics?

Answer: All of these are correct

Nicolas Cage, who was Jake Preston in 'Fire Birds', also played 'Johnny Blaze' in the 2007 production of 'Ghost Rider'; characters created by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog at Marvel Comics. Tommy Lee Jones, who played Brad Little in the movie, was part of the 'Batman' franchise playing the dual roles of Harvey Dent and Two Face in the 1995 movie 'Batman Forever'; characters created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger at DC Comics. Peter Onorati, had the role of Rice in 'Fire Birds', also voiced 'Warhawk' for two episodes and 'B'wana Beast' for one episode, between 2004 and 2005, in the animated series 'Justice League', whose characters were based on the creations of DC Comics.
4. ENTERTAINMENT: Which of the following choices is a card in "Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game (TCG)"?

Answer: Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys

The Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys has three purposes: (a) to clear the 'Spell and Trap' zone, (b) maintain a field presence, and (c) become a 'beatstick'. If a card effect is used to destroy this card, in your next 'Standby' phase, 'Special Summons' the card from the graveyard and you will be able to destroy all the 'Spell and Trap' cards in play.
5. FOR CHILDREN: Anyone who reads the Harry Potter series knows that Fawkes the phoenix plays a significant role in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". Indeed, Dumbledore's faithful companion has some mention in all but one of the series. Which book is he absent from?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

We learn in the first book, "Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone", that Harry's and Voldemort's wands contain feathers from the same phoenix though we don't find out until later that it was Fawkes. In the "Half Blood Prince", Fawkes sings a lament after Dumbledore dies and Fawkes leaves Hogwarts. His appearance in "Deathly Hallows" is only as a flashback in Professor Snape's final memories.
6. GENERAL: David Farrell, bass guitarist for Linkin Park, goes by the name Phoenix. How did he acquire the nickname?

Answer: High school nickname he picked up from friends

Dave mentions in an interview that the Phoenix name came from a Ben Stiller film 'Mystery Men' that he saw in high school. He is still a big Ben Stiller fan.
7. GEOGRAPHY: In which Italian city would you find the Teatro La Fenice (The Phoenix) opera house?

Answer: Venice

Construction of the original theatre was completed in 1792. It was completely destroyed by fire in 1836 and rebuilt from the ashes. Arson was responsible for the destruction of the building again in 1996. Yet again the theatre has risen from the ashes.
8. HISTORY: The city seal of Lawrence, Kansas, bears an image of a phoenix rising from the ashes to commemorate which Civil War event?

Answer: Quantrill's Raid

Quantrill's Raid is also known as the Lawrence Massacre. The raid was one of the bloodiest events in the history of Kansas, leaving behind nearly 200 dead boys and men. Twenty-five percent of the town was burned during the mayhem. Jayhawk Senator James H. Lane, the main target of the raid, barely escaped by running through a corn field in his night shirt.
Shelby's Great Raid and Price's Raid both took place in Missouri, not Kansas.
Morgan's Raid was a raid into Ohio and Indiana.
9. HOBBIES: Which country issued a ten euro silver coin in 2005, featuring a phoenix, to commemorate sixty years of peace and freedom?

Answer: Belgium

The phoenix symbolizes Europe re-building itself from the fires of World War II. The coin does represent legal tender but only within the borders of Belgium itself. However, with its bullion value a great deal more valuable than its face value it is likely that it will remain in hands of collectors.
10. HUMANITIES: In which of William Shakespeare's plays does Sebastian give an indication that he believes in the existence of the 'one phoenix'?

Answer: The Tempest

In Act III scene 3, a magical banquet is laid out before the King and his travelling party. It all looks so real that Sebastian makes his claim about a phoenix, one similar to expressing a belief in the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus.
