Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which rock band had a hit in 1986 with the album "A Kind Of Magic"?

Answer: Queen

"A Kind Of Magic" was the twelfth studio album released by Queen and the last album that they would tour in support of due to Freddie Mercury's HIV diagnosis. The album yielded the hits "One Vision" and "Who Wants To Live Forever" as well as the title track and also featured the talents of the great Joan Armatrading providing guest vocals on "Don't Lose Your Head" and the National Philharmonic Orchestra on "Who Wants To Live Forever".
2. In which of these towns could one drive around the magic roundabout? Personally I'd take an alternative route.

Answer: Swindon

The magic roundabout was built in 1972 and consists of a larger, inner roundabout around which traffic moves counterclockwise and five outer mini roundabouts around which traffic flow is clockwise. A 2007 BBC survey, named it as one of the "10 Scariest Junctions in the United Kingdom", but a 2010 study by Highways England found it had reduced injurious crashes by three quarters.
3. In the novel "The Colour of Magic" (1983), we are first introduced to Rincewind the wizard. Who wrote this book?

Answer: Terry Pratchett

"The Colour Of Magic" was the first in Pratchett's series of "Discworld" novels, which by the time of his death in 2015 ran to an impressive 41 books. Pratchett was awarded a knighthood for "services to literature" in 2009, about which he jokingly said, "I suspect the 'services to literature' consisted of refraining from trying to write any."

Answer: Orlando

5. Which company replaced its "Dream" mobile phone with the "Magic" in 2008?

Answer: HTC

The HTC Magic, available in Black, Merlot, or White was only HTC's second Android phone after the "Dream". It was sold as the T-Mobile "myTouch" in USA and the NTT DoCoMo HT-03A in Japan and was replaced by the "Hero" in 2009.
6. What is the compound contained in magic mushrooms that gives them their psychedelic qualities?

Answer: Psilocybin

It would seem that civilised man has known about the effects of magic mushrooms for many years. Rock art in the Sahara desert from almost 9000 years ago shows dancers holding mushrooms with lines drawn between the 'shroom and the dancer's head, leading researchers to believe, that while this is not proof, it may be a hint that ancient man partook of mind altering fungi.
7. Throughout the 1970s, what was the advertising tagline of Black Magic chocolates in UK?

Answer: Who Knows The Secret?

Black Magic first went on sale in 1933 and for many years their ad campaign consisted of a woman telling of a romantic encounter over a box of the chocolates, but that changed in the 70s to the campaign in the question, a series of mysterious adverts which continued well into the 80s. Of the other possible answers, "All because the lady loves", was Milk Tray chocolates, "What's the worst that could happen" was Dr. Pepper soda and "For a hundred million reasons" was Durex condoms.
8. The Prince of which country passed the entrance exam to magician's society, The Magic Circle in 1975?

Answer: Wales

H.R.H. Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, is a well known lover of magic and performed a cup and ball routine to the committee for his Magic Circle exam. The cups and balls that were used by him are now housed in the Magic Circle museum, along with a rare sound recording of Harry Houdini.
9. In 1975, who had a top ten hit in USA and Canada with their song "Magic"?

Answer: Pilot

Pilot were a Scottish band but the single "Magic" didn't crack the top ten in UK, having its biggest success in USA where it peaked at number five and Canada where it topped the charts. The song was covered in 2009 by Selena Gomez and has been sampled by Flo Rida and J.R. Writer in rap tracks, although Writer's sample is sped up so much it sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
10. Which UK kid's TV show ran from 1965 to 1977 and told the exploits of Dougal, a long haired dog, Ermintrude, a pink cow and Dylan, who appeared to be a stoner rabbit?

Answer: The Magic Roundabout

"The Magic Roundabout" was an English version of French show, "Le Manège enchanté" created by Serge Danot in 1963. Other characters included Brian the snail, Zebedee the spring and humans Florence and Rosalie. In 1975, Birmingham comedian Jasper Carrott released as the B side to his "Funky Moped" single, an adult version of "Magic Roundabout", where characters discussed the sex life of Florence, which surprisingly reached number five in UK charts.
