Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This comedic Jerry, born Jerome Allen, made a sitcom 'about nothing' in the '90s. What is his last name?

Answer: Seinfeld

Stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld was born April 29, 1954 as Jerome Allen Seinfeld, and was the show's namesake and central character. He once responded to an interviewer's question about the show, stating that it was 'about nothing'. His very successful 'nothing' comedy ran from 1989 until 1998.
2. Which of the following is fitted inside of a long, thin, cylindrical writing device? Though it is made of the same material as diamonds, it is often found to be quite dull, losing its fine point after too much usage.

Answer: graphite

Graphite is another name for pencil lead. Of course we sharpen pencils, but the lead eventually becomes rounded and dulled through usage, losing its point. Carbon is an element found in both diamond and in pencil lead.
3. I'm not able to point you in the right direction due to a nasty meat slicer accident that claimed a few of my 'digits'. What's another name for the fingers I've lost, causing me to 'lose the point', so-to-speak?

Answer: phalanges

In anatomy, phalanx bones, pluralized 'phalanges', are the bones of the fingers and toes. 'Digits' is another name for fingers. In Western culture, people often point with their index fingers. I realize this is not the case, however, in some other cultures where other fingers are used to point.
4. Which group of folks might uphold pointlessness, if they ever get around to it?

Answer: procrastinators

Procrastinators may or may not get around to upholding anything. They find no point in rushing or doing anything too fast--or at all. Luckily, there is a place called Procrastinators Anonymous where people who suffer this malady can congregate, and get help - if they ever get around to it, that is.
5. It would be pointless to argue with this artistic, expressive person and expect a verbal reply. Who is this enigmatic, silent actor?

Answer: Mime

A mime utilizes mime as an acting device, telling a tale through body language and expressions. Often times, I've seen them on street corners downtown, performing with robotic motions. I've greeted them with the customary 'Hello', but they just smile through make-up, politely, and twist off into their world of contortion and robotics. So, expecting any form of words to escape from their mouths is a fruitless effort, I've found.

Incidentally, they used to be called 'mummers' in old England.

6. What is the mathematical name for this 'pointless' type of energy, also termed 'vacuum energy' by some?

Answer: Zero Point

Zero-point energy is often used interchangeably with vacuum energy of empty space. Another name is 'zero-point field', the lowest energy state of a field - which is non-zero, and is its ground state. This concept was first introduced by Albert Einstein and Otto Stern in 1913. But you'll probably find this information pointless, if not useful.
7. Which breed of dog, having pointless ears naturally, is NOT often 'cropped' to make its ears stand up straight and look more pointed?

Answer: Pointer

Cosmetic otoplasty, or cropping, is an ear reshaping surgery performed on dogs, preferably at around 12 weeks of age, if at all. This trimming makes the ears stand straighter. Many who consider this to be mutilation to the dog find it unnecessary.

Many owners do not properly care for the animal with disinfectants and anesthesia, or have proper follow-up after surgery. Pit bulls, Dobermans, Boston terriers, boxers, and some other breeds often have this procedure performed.

Pointers are not known to have cropping performed, normally.

I think all dog-lovers get the point of letting the ears flop au natural.
8. Which explosive mountain, located in southern Washington state, appeared 'less pointed' after a violent eruption blew its cap on May 18, 1980?

Answer: Mount St. Helens

Mt. St. Helens, which had erupted in 1857, exploded in a massive cloud of ash, smoke and debris on Sunday, May 18, 1980 in Washington state. It blanketed the skies with fine ash, darkening the skies in the Pacific Northwest. Six good people were killed, including the venerable Harry Truman, a courageous old codger who defied Mother Nature, but sadly did not live to tell his story.
9. There may or may not be a point to this quiz, or even life. However, according to a group of free thinkers, including Friedrich Nietzsche, there is a more subjective type of thinking and that offers a 'purposeful, pointed' life, originating from the inner world of the person versus the colder, more objective world. What is this philosophy called?

Answer: existentialism

Though credited with the term, Friedrich Nietzsche, one of the first philosophers considered a 'rock star' of the movement, ironically never actually used the term "existentialism". He did, however, focus on the subjective, inner human experiences that he and others felt were the origin of a person having purpose, validation, some 'point' to life.

He and others preferred this type of 'human'-pointed outlook to what they saw as the more objective yet colder truths of math and hard science. Similar to Pascal's thinking, they were interested in people's inner struggle with the meaninglessness of life and the use of diversions, distractions, and other sideshow to escape from boredom.
10. One day after showering, I began to wonder: is there a point to having bodily hair? What is at least one reported 'point' to having body hair?

Answer: traps the scent of pheromones

One of the reported 'points' to having bodily hair is its ability to trap the 'scent' of pheromones, thus making humans all the more desirable and attractive to the opposite sex. Pheromones are bodily chemicals, which create a person's individual scent.
