Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mariana Trench is the deepest point in the ocean and it remained unknown for men until 1960. That year a bathyscaphe reached the bottom of the trench, but what was its name?

Answer: Trieste

The Mariana Trench with approximately a maximum-known depth of 35,793 feet (10,910 meters) is the deepest point in the ocean. If we could put Mount Everest inside it, there still would be nearly 6760 feet (2050 meters) of water above Mount Everest.
The whole place was completely unexplored by man until 1960. That year a US Navy bathyscaphe called "Trieste" (It was built in Italy) reached the bottom of the trench with Lieutenant Jacques Piccard on board.
There were another two descents, in 1966 and the last one in 2009.
2. Erosion is produced when an external agent transports material from Earth's surface to another place. What is the name given to wind erosion?

Answer: Aeolian Erosion

Wind or aeolian erosion is typical of arid climates where there is little or no vegetation. The blowing wind carries small pieces of rock from one place to another one.
One example of this kind of erosion is the worldwide famous Valle de La Luna (Valley of the Moon) situated in San Juan, Argentina. It received this name because of its extraordinary desolate rocky landscape, which it is said to be similar to the moon surface.
3. The Nile is the longest river in the world while the Amazon is the second one. The Amazon discharges into the Atlantic Ocean, but where is the most distant source of the Amazon located?

Answer: Peru

The most distant source of The Amazon is located on a peak called Nevado Mismi (a glacial formation) in the Peruvian Andes. It wasn't finally ascertained until 1996.
The waters of Nevado Mismo flow into Apurimac River, a tributary of Ucayali River which finally joins The Marañon River to form The Amazon.
4. One more question about rivers. Which is the widest river in the world?

Answer: Río de la Plata River

The Rio de la Plata or River Plate (like the football team) is formed by the confluence of other two rivers (Uruguay and Paraná). It widens from two kilometers to a maximum of 220 kilometers just before draining into the Atlantic Ocean.
This river is the border between Argentina and Uruguay, and the capital cities of both countries (Buenos Aires and Montevideo) can be found on its western and northern shores respectively.
5. In geography an isotherm is a line or curve on a map that connects points of equal temperature. What´s the name for the line or curve on a map that connects points that have the same precipitation?

Answer: Isohyet

The correct answer is isohyet.
The prefix "iso" is derived from a Greek word that means equal. You can find all this lines on meteorological maps, topographic maps and others. The more usual are the isotherm (temperature), isobar (barometric pressure), isohyet (rain), isohypse (terrain elevation) and isobath (underwater depth). An isohypse can also be called a contour line.
6. The word peninsula literally means "almost an island" because it's a large expanse of land almost surrounded by water. Which is the largest peninsula in the world?

Answer: Arabian Peninsula

It's the Arabian Peninsula with an expanse of 1,250,000 sq mi (3,237,500 km2). It's located between Asia and Africa and surrounded by the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf. A desert climate covers the entire peninsula but it's a strategic place because the whole area has a vast reserve of petroleum and natural gas.
7. The coast of continents have been shaped by different elements and structural factors over millions of years. Which of the following terms is not a type of landform found exclusively on a coast?

Answer: Plain

The plain is not a type of coast, it's a big area of land with no elevations on it. it can be found on a stretch of coastline but not exclusively. The Steppes are an example of a plain. If a plain is located at the bottom of the sea it's called an abyssal plain.
8. The oceans are big masses of salt water, but there are other sources of salt water like the Dead Sea. Which is the main characteristic of this lake?

Answer: It's the lowest elevation on Earth's surface

The Dead Sea or Salt Sea is a body of water between Israel and Jordan. It's located 1388 feet (432 meters) below sea level so it's the lowest elevation of the Earth's surface.
It's also an hypersaline lake, nearly 8.5 times saltier than the ocean. This high salinity is the reason why animals and aquatic plants can't live in it.
There are two hypotheses about its origin. The first and older one says that the lake is on a rift zone, an extension of the Red Sea rift. The second one says that the Dead Sea basin is a consequence of a discontinuity along the Dead Sea.
9. Biology is the scientific study of life and living organisms. Some islands, like Madagascar, are often object of study of biologists; why is that?

Answer: Because it has unique species not found in other places.

The island of Madagascar is often the object of investigation because of its biodiversity where you can see and study exotic animals and plants not found in other places.
Millions of years ago the island of Madagascar broke off from the African continent, so it's a living example of species evolution in completely isolation. Despite its proximity to Africa the island doesn't share any of the typical animals you can see in Africa.
The island is situated in the Indian Ocean near other groups of islands, like the Seychelles Islands, Comoros Islands and Mauritius.
10. A landlocked nation is a country with no access to the sea. Europe has the most landlocked nations, but how many are there in South America?

Answer: 2

There are only two landlocked countries in South America, Bolivia and Paraguay. In the past Bolivia had access to the Pacific Ocean, but after the Pacific War (1879-1883) in which Chile fought against Bolivia and Peru, Bolivia lost part of its territory (including the city of Antofagasta) and the access to the sea.
