Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The climate of this country is mainly tropical. Most of the Amazon Rainforest is found here, the largest country in South America. What is the name of this country?

Answer: Brazil

The Amazon River, the second largest river in the world (after the Nile), is found in Brazil. The Amazon Rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world, is also found mainly in Brazil, although it is also in most of the other South American countries. Rainfall in Brazil is usually moderate and most of it occurs south of the equator. Altogether, Brazil has five different climates: equatorial, tropical, subtropical, highland tropical, and semiarid.
2. Mount Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, is located in which South American country?

Answer: Ecuador

Mount Cotopaxi can be found in the Andes Mountain in Ecuador. It is among the volcanoes forming the Pacific Ring of Fire. Many people have attempted to climb this 19,347 foot volcano. The first European to do so was Alexander von Humboldt in 1802, but he didn't make it to the top.
In 1862, Frederic Edwin Church painted a picture of Mount Cotopaxi. The painting was called "View of Cotopaxi".
3. Iguazu Falls forms a border between Brazil and which other country?

Answer: Argentina

Iguazu Falls is located on the border between Argentina and Brazil. In 2011, it became one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Tourists who wish to visit the spot can visit it by traveling through not only towns in Argentina or Brazil but also a town in Paraguay (Ciudad del Este).
According to legend, the Iguazu Falls was created by a god. This god wished to marry a lady but she tried fleeing on a canoe. The god became enraged and sliced the river.
4. Unlike most countries in South America, this country does not have Spanish as a national language but rather Dutch. Until 1954, it was known by a different name. Which South American country is this?

Answer: Suriname

Suriname, also called Surinam, was under the control of the Dutch from 1667 until 1954. During this time, Suriname was called Dutch Guiana. It is because of this that Dutch is the national language of Suriname.
Only three other countries in South America don't have Spanish as a first language. They are Brazil (Portuguese), French Guiana (French), and Guyana (English).
In Suriname, people drive on the left hand side of the road (one of only two South American countries to do so, the other being Guyana). One possibility for this is because Suriname was under the control of the Dutch, who at that time, drove on the left hand side of the road.
5. What is the national sport of Argentina?

Answer: pato

Pato has been the national sport of Argentina since 1953. The game was originally played with a duck, which is where the name came from (pato is Spanish for duck.) On horses, a member would grab a duck and whoever got it back to the ranch first wins.

This means the playing field would generally be from one ranch to another. It was eventually banned due to the violence of both the duck and the cowboys. New rules were made, similar to polo, and the game became less violent.
6. The equator passes through three South American countries. Which is not one of them?

Answer: Suriname

The equator passes through thirteen countries; three of them are South American countries. Those three South American countries are Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador. Despite what some people may say, the equator does not pass through Peru; the equator barely misses it. Four countries lie entirely north of the equator (Venezuela, Guinea, French Guiana, and Suriname) while the others lie entirely south of the equator.
The Spanish translation for equator is ecuador, just like the country. It is believed that this is how the country got its name.
7. This country was liberated by Simon Bolivar. The world's highest waterfall can be found here. It is one of the most northern countries of South America. What is the name of the largest lake in the country that has been described?

Answer: Lake Maracaibo

In 1823, Venezuela was liberated by Simon Bolivar (who also liberated several other South American countries, in addition to Panama). This is reflected in several ways. First, the official name of Venezuela is the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Second, the currency is the Bolivar fuerte. Third, there is a main square called Plaza Bolivar in every town or city in Venezuela.

The largest lake in Venezuela is Lake Maracaibo. The length is 13,210 kilometers square. It is also one of the world's oldest lakes--anywhere between 20 and 36 million years old. The lake flows into the Gulf of Venezuela.

The world's largest waterfall, Angel Falls, has a height of 3,212 feet, most of which is a straight plunge although there is a slope. The name was named after an aviator called Jimmie Angel. Jimmie was the first person to fly over the falls.
8. Which country has a law known as the Law of the Rights of Mother Earth?

Answer: Bolivia

In December 2010, Bolivia passed the Law of the Rights of Mother Earth. This law states that all nature should be treated the same as humans. Additionally, the same laws that apply to humans should also apply to nature. This is the first environmental law that treats nature the same way as humans.

This also means that a person can sue nature. The collection of all nature is referred to as Mother Earth.
9. What is the national bird of Colombia?

Answer: Andean condor

The national bird of Colombia is the Andean condor, which can be found on the Colombia coat of arms. The Andean condor is one of the largest birds of prey. It is also a scavenger, eating deer and cattle. It is also plays a large role in the mythology and folklore of Colombia.

It is also the national bird of several other South American countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru.
10. Is the island shown in the photo a South American country?

Answer: No

The country shown, Cuba, is a Central American country. Cuba was once under Spanish rule (as was the case of many South American countries). After being freed from Spanish rule, there was the choice of becoming a territory of the United States or an independent nation, and they chose the latter.
