Oh The Places I Was Supposed To Go Quiz

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I visited the Lower Calf Falls in Utah, but I was supposed to see the falls that are between Argentina and Brazil. What falls are these, that are 269 feet tall?

Answer: Iguazu Falls

Lower Calf Creek Falls is a fun little hike outside of Escalante, Utah. The hike is just shy of six miles and you will be blessed with this gorgeous view that I took here.

I actually was supposed to see Brazil in 2020 and yes, the Iguazu Falls too. Some of the falls flow into the Devil's Throat, which is a canyon about 200 to 300 feet wide. Most people that wish to visit the falls come in from one of two countries. You can come in from the Brazil side or the Argentina side. They are both in the Iguazu National Park, while Brazil spells it as Iguacu instead. If you're in the mood to view the falls from the sky, you need to take a helicopter from the Brazil side only.
2. Years ago I backpacked the Camino trail in Spain and came across the Monumento De Monte do Gozo up on a small mountain top. This year I was going to see a wonder of the world in Rio de Janeiro. What is the name of this statue that sits on top of Corcovado Mountain?

Answer: Christ the Redeemer

We backpacked the Camino de Santiago from Sarria to Santiago. Just a short 111 kilometers to gain a certificate to show that you indeed did hike the trail. This is the pretty much the last hill that I saw before entering the city of Santiago.

I was supposed to see Christ the Redeemer and enjoy a few days celebrating in Rio de Janeiro. The Redeemer itself sits at 98 feet tall. The arms also expand to 92 feet wide. The sculpture was designed by Paul Landowski and was completed in 1931. What a view to see this massive statue this will be.
3. This animal is known as the Camel of the Clouds. If you hike up the Inca Trail, my guess is you will see these animals along the way. What is the name of this beautiful animal?

Answer: Alpaca

The alpaca is a beautiful animal and sometimes confused with a llama. I didn't get to hike the Inca Trail but I did go to an Alpaca farm in Oregon to see these beautiful and helpful animals. They can help carry a nice size load up a mountain for you. You can see them all over Peru, at the tops of the mountains and in the green hills by Rainbow Mountain and along the Inca Trail too.
4. I was looking forward to seeing all different types of animals, including monkeys, and deadly frogs in the Amazon jungle and rainforest. Which country does NOT include part of the Amazon?

Answer: Canada

The Amazon rainforest is actually the largest rainforest in the world. We need the forest to survive and much of the forest has been destroyed over the years. People, animals and plants are all over the Amazon. I had hopes of seeing unique animals. I did see this monkey at a zoo in the past year, but not it was quite seeing animals in the wild, in their habitat.

One of the most unusual animals I wished to see, from far away, was the very popular poison dart frog. Small but extremely deadly.

The Amazon travels through eight different countries and covers about 40 percent of South America. Make sure that you set up a tour and get in there and help save our future.
5. What is the name of this mountain also referred to as Vinicunca in Peru?

Answer: Rainbow Mountain

I was so looking forward to seeing the Rainbow Mountain. Another name for the mountain is the 'seven color' mountain. The mountain stands at 17,060 feet above sea level. I wanted to stand at the top and wear the colorful outfits and stand with an alpaca right next to me.

Instead I visited an alpaca in Oregon. Not quite the same, but I had fun getting pictures of their beautiful faces.
6. The Bonneville Salt Flats on the Nevada/Utah border are so dry and unique looking. I wanted to visit the Uyuni Salt Flat this year. What country are those flats in?

Answer: Bolivia

The salt flats in Bolivia are actually called the Salar de Uyuni and are the largest salt flats in the world. I have seen hundreds of pictures that look like mirrors of glass when the rain comes down on the salts. The salt flats are actually made from salt crystallization and the lack of water on the beds.

As you walk along the flats in Nevada, you can hear "crunch crunch crunch" on every step.
7. This is a long neck turtle and I spotted this little beauty in Australia. I was going to visit a place that features giant tortoise on special islands in South America. What islands are these?

Answer: Galapagos Islands

I was supposed to visit a few of the Galápagos Islands, including Isabela Island, Santa Cruz Island and San Cristobal Island. My highlight was to see the Pacific sea turtles and the giant tortoise. Can you imagine swimming alongside these beautiful creatures? You can visit the Charles Darwin Research Center on Santa Cruz and learn more about the mammoth turtles.
8. I love to hike and have hiked to many peaks over the years, but in 2020 I was planning a special four day hike to the beautiful Machu Picchu. What is the name of this popular trail in Peru?

Answer: The Inca Trail

There are different ways to hike to Machu Picchu, however, the Inca Trail is the most common one. The trail is 26 miles long, which doesn't seem too long over four or five days, but the most difficult part is the elevation. As you travel through the Andes mountains in Peru you will spot beautiful scenery, sometimes snow and you may spot an alpaca too. Make sure you get a guide to carry your gear and make it a fun, relaxing and enjoyable hike.
9. I wanted to stand on the "center of the world" but instead I went out to a field in South Dakota and saw the 'center of the United States". What country can I find the real "center of the earth"?

Answer: Ecuador

When you visit Quito the highlight for me was to stand in two hemispheres! Both the north and south are separated by a yellow painted line. You will see the Middle of the World Monument at the spot where you can also see the latitude of 00'00'00". Is this the true center? No, but it's really close.

Quito isn't only the center of the earth, but it is also the second highest capital city in elevation in the world. I will be going there one day, just not in 2020.
10. I have seen many glaciers, including the ones in Glacier National Park, but this glacier I witnessed on the Wonderland trail in Washington state. I was looking forward to seeing the beautiful glacier in Argentina in Los Glaciares National Park. What is the name of this beauty?

Answer: Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier is about 18,000 years old. Many people have different theories on the age of the glacier, but scientists have calculated the age. It's also a rare glacier that is not melting, like others, but in fact is getting larger. It is also 240 feet tall and was 19 miles long and 3 miles wide at one time.
