4. The largest rainforest in the world is the Amazon, located in northern South America. It is fertilized by dust from the largest 'hot' desert in the world, the Sahara. Where is the Sahara desert located?

Answer: Northern Africa

Believe it or not, over 56% of the dust that fertilizes the Amazon rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world, comes all the way from Chad, in the eastern Sahara, which is located in northern Africa. The Sahara dust, about 27.7 million tons of it, is blown over the Atlantic ocean and brings with it important phosphorous, essential for plant growth.

In fact, the Sahara releases about 182 million tons of dust every year with the large majority of it remaining airborne.

5. Countries in Africa with the letter "z" in their names include Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Choose the correct "z" country from this list.

Answer: Mozambique

Mozambique lies on the southeastern coast of Africa, on the Mozambique Channel. Across the channel is Madagascar. Mozambique was colonized first by Portugal, in a search for gold. Its slave trade and forced labor were so intense that they were referred to as slave armies.

After much war, internal conflict and poverty, it won its independence and became a democracy. Mozambique has titanium, tropical weather, five major rivers and several lakes, all of which have boosted economic growth.

7. The name of which tiny but glamorous European country comes from the Greek for "single house"?

Answer: Monaco

The world's second-smallest sovereign state, the Principality of Monaco grew around the tall monolith known as the Rock of Monaco, a coveted possession overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The Rock was first settled by the Ligures, the ancient population that gave its name to the neighbouring Italian region of Liguria; later, in the 6th century BC, a group of Phocaean Greeks from Massalia (present-day Marseille) founded the colony of Monoikos ("Monoecus" in Latin).

The colony's name - from the Greek "monos" (alone, single) and "oikos" (house) - is believed to have originated from the only temple in the area, the temple of Heracles (Hercules) that stood on the Rock. According to a legend, during his travels Heracles built a road that connected Italy with Spain, passing through the area where Monaco is now located.

This legend was documented in the writings of two renowned Greek historians, Diodorus Siculus and Strabo (both active in the 1st century AD). The only deep-water port in Monaco, which has been in use since ancient times, is named Port Hercule ("Port Hercules" in French).

8. Which city on the Danube was known as Pressburg prior to 1919?

Answer: Bratislava

Mentionned as Brezalauspurc in a 10th c text, Bratislava (capital of Slovakia) was called Preßburg when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, which collapsed in the autumn of 1918. When the Ottoman Turks invaded Hungary, Bratislava was chosen as the new capital of Hungary in 1536.

It is only 60 km from Vienna, hence its historically sizable German-speaking population and its German-sounding name, Preßburg.

9. New Britain is a large island in the southwestern Pacific. Which country administers the island?

Answer: Papua New Guinea

New Britain, along with the rest of New Guinea, were ceded to Australia from Germany, under the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. The country was renamed Papua New Guinea in 1971 and declared themselves independent in 1975. New Britain is the 39th largest island in the world, roughly the same area as Maine.

Question by player ozzz2002
10. What is wrong with the statement "Texarkana is the border town of Texas and Arizona"?

Answer: Texas doesn't border Arizona.

A cable television readout stated that "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" was based on a true story (which is correct) about murders that happened in Texarkana (which is correct) which was a "Texas/Arizona border town" (which is completely wrong, because New Mexico separates Texas and Arizona). Texarkana is partially in ARKANSAS and Texas, not Arizona.

The movie itself is notable because the killer was never caught because he wore a hood over his head when he killed people in broad daylight, which looks like the hood Jason Voorhees later wore in "Friday the 13th: Part Two". If they show "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" on cable again and it says the Arizona/Texas border town, you will know their mistake.
