Panama's famous canal was originally a French project begun in 1880. The French Canal Company, which was in charge of the dig, wound up in bankruptcy nine years later. The U.S. paid them $40 million for their rights and assets, moved the site to territory controlled by the U.S. and began construction in 1904, completing the canal in 1914.
