Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, is situated on the southeastern side of the island of Honshu, the nation's main island. Tokyo was formerly known as Edo, but changed its name when it became the capital in 1868. "The Michelin Guide" has awarded Tokyo more Michelin stars than any other city in the world.

2. Continuing east, I've now landed in British Columbia, Canada. I want to visit the capital of the province, Victoria. I need to take a ferry to which island?

Answer: Vancouver Island

Victoria can be found on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The city is one of the oldest in the Pacific Northwest; the British began settling there in the 1840s. Vancouver Island is the largest island off the western coast of North America and is named after British navy officer and explorer George Vancouver.

3. I have flown into Arizona, USA, and have headed to the northeastern area of the state. I'm about to get onto Route 66, but have been told I should visit the national park close by in Navajo and Apache counties. Which national park?

The Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona is so named because of the large deposits of petrified wood (wood turned to stone). Around 380 square kilometers in area, it encompasses part of the stunning Painted Desert. Death Valley is in California and Nevada, The Everglades is in Florida, and Shenandoah is in Virginia.

4. I've got my kicks driving Route 66, and I've just completed my trip at the eastern terminus, at the corner of Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Avenue. In which city am I?

Answer: Chicago

Chicago, located in northeastern Illinois at the southwestern tip of Lake Michigan, is one of the biggest cities in the United States. Route 66, as the song implies, runs west from Chicago to Los Angeles at a distance of around 3,940 kilometres.

5. I have now arrived at the Lake District in the northwest of England. I'm feeling active and want to climb England's highest peak. Which mountain will I be attempting to ascend?

Answer: Scafell Pike

Situated in the county of Cumbria, Scafell Pike at 978 metres is the highest peak in England. The summit was donated to the National Trust in honour of the people of the Lake District that died in World War I. Ben Nevis, Mount Snowdon and Slieve Donard are the highest mountains in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland respectively.

6. Continuing on, I've arrived at the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe. I intend to swim in the Black Sea, visit some Transylvanian castles and hike through the southern Carpathian Mountains. In which country am I?

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus in Turkey was built by the Greeks around 350BC for Mausolus, a governor of the Persian Empire, and his wife Artemisia II of Caria. The original structure was believed to have been destroyed by floods some time toward the end of the fifteenth century. What's left of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are in modern-day Iraq, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia is in Greece and the Lighthouse of Alexandria is in Egypt.

8. I have flown south and landed at Queen Alia International Airport. I intend to visit the historical and archaeological site of Petra. Which country am I in?

Answer: Jordan

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is situated on the East Bank of the River Jordan. More than fifty percent of the country is desert-land. Amman is the capital, the official language is Arabic and the monetary unit is the dinar. Petra, often called "The Rose Red City", was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, and is famous for its beautiful, coloured rock cut architecture.

9. I'm heading home, but one last stop off in Burma, or the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to be politically correct. I am in the north of the country in Burma's "second city", and I want to see some of the 700 pagodas and then take a boat trip on the Irawaddy River. In which city am I?

Answer: Mandalay

Mandalay is the economic focal point of Upper Burma. Over the past few decades, there has been a massive influx of Chinese people, and whilst this hasn't pleased the Burmese traditionalists it has certainly improved the economy. Naypyitaw has been the nation's capital since 2005, Yangon (Rangoon) was the former capital and is the largest city, and Myawaddy is a town in south-eastern Burma close to the Thai border.

10. Back home in Thailand, the heat and the hustle and bustle of Bangkok is frenetic. I've just time to take a taxi ride and visit the official residence of the Thai Monarchs. Where should I ask my driver to take me?

Answer: The Grand Palace

In the centre of Bangkok is a spectacular labyrinth of buildings known as the Grand Palace. It has been the royal residence since 1782. Whilst the reigning monarch usually lives at Chitralada Palace, the Grand Palace is still used for official events and ceremonies. The palace complex is around 220,000 square metres in size.
