Can You Tell me Where I am? Average Difficulty Trivia Questions

1. The documentary begins at the Diomede Islands which lie in the Bering Strait. Which describes the islands' connection to the United States and Russia?

From Quiz
Circling Michael Palin's Trip

Answer: Big Diomede is controlled by Russia and Little Diomede is controlled by the United States

Big and little are relative with Big Diomede Island measuring 11 square miles and Little Diomede Island just under 3 square miles. Though the islands are not much more than two miles apart, Big Diomede is almost a day ahead due to the International Date Line running between it and Little Diomede. The Big Island has military personnel but no permanent population. The Little Island has a village, Diomede, whose population is under 200. Michael Palin and the crew began their journey on Little Diomede and hoped to return there at their journey's end one year later. From a hill overlooking Diomede, Michael Palin outlined the plan of his journey.

2. Let us start our journey in the city that has Abbey Road in one of its suburbs, which became famous as a photo cover for a Beatles album. Can you name the city?

From Quiz Have Passport - Will Travel

Answer: London

Abbey Road runs through St. John's Wood (Borough of Camden and the City of Westminster) in London. The Abbey Road Studios (3 Abbey Road) was a venue the Beatles used for recording and the road appeared on the cover of the 1969 album called "Abbey Road" by the Beatles. All of the Beatles members were born in Liverpool and the band was formed there in 1960.

3. Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre (named after the explorer Edward John Eyre and not Charlotte Bronte's titular governess) contains the lowest point of the continent on which it is located. To which large country would you need to go to visit it?

From Quiz Literally Characterful Places

Answer: Australia

Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is located about 700 kilometres (435 miles) north of the city of Adelaide in South Australia. The lake bed covers an enormous area of approximately 9,500 square kilometres (3,700 square miles) but as it is located in Australia's central desert region, the majority of its area is usually dried up. In general, the lake only fills with water during the rainy season when water levels rise in the rivers that empty into it. When this occurs, the lake only has an average depth of around 1.5 to 4 metres (5 to 13 feet) and most water loss from it occurs through the process of evaporation. The lowest point on the lake bed is 15 metres (49 feet) below sea level and is the Australian continent's lowest point. In 1840, Edward John Eyre became the first European to see the lake that was then named in his honour. Charlotte Bronte's novel 'Jane Eyre' was not published for another seven years. The name originally given to the lake by the native people was Kati Thanda and the two rival names for it were officially combined together in 2012.

4. Situated on the southern edge of the Sahara desert, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, which country is home to the famous city of Timbuktu?

5. Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1 comes from Cairns, North Queensland, a sugar town when he was young. One of his most poignant memories was once a year in the evening, sometime between August and September, there was a spectacular sight. What was it?

From Quiz Hearts on Fire: Phoenix Rising's Global Village

Answer: The burning of sugar cane before harvesting

Cairns certainly is a sweet city, wedged in between the Great Barrier Reef a few miles off shore and the lofty peaks of the Great Dividing Range behind the town. It became even more beautiful just before the sugar cane was harvested, which seemed to be planted in every available place on the edge of town. At this time the cane was purposely set afire, (always at night when the winds were lighter) to rid the cane of leaves and pests. This was a spectacular sight and many a night was spent sat on the back patio watching the flames lick the sky. To this day the smell of burnt sugar cane is right up there with the smell of eucalyptus as powerful reminders of 1nn1's Australian childhood. Question contributed by 1nn1 who, when ten, moved from Cairns to Brisbane 1800 kms / 1200 mi south but incredibly, his first house in Brisbane was on the same street (Bruce Highway) and in the same state (Queensland - Australia's Sunshine State).

6. East meets West in this city that has had a variety of names throughout its history. What is the modern name for the city of Byzantium?

From Quiz Fire In the Belly: PR's Geographical Bucket List

I can imagine treading in the footsteps of people like Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Istanbul links Europe and Asia and has a rich cultural legacy of many ethnic influences. This question was created by Phoenix Rising member smpdit

Its post office receives many cards during the Christmas season to be stamped "Christmas Island" and sent on. Answer: Missouri

The city of Hannibal, Missouri can be found around 160 kilometres (100 miles) north-west of the much larger city of St. Louis. It is located on the Mississippi River, on which the author Samuel Langhorne Clemens used to work as a riverboat pilot and would probably have uttered the nautical term for the depth of the water that he later took as his famous pen name. Much of Hannibal's tourist industry is based around its connection to Mark Twain as it is home to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, Mark Twain Cave, Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse and Sawyer's Creek Fun Park, as well as hosting events such as 'Tom Sawyer Days'. Although the city's name derives from the Carthaginian hero who achieved military success during the Second Punic War after marching his army (and some elephants) across the Alps, the name 'Hannibal' is now associated with Thomas Harris's evil character Hannibal Lecter, who was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the Oscar-winning film 'The Silence of the Lambs'.

26. The Gasparilla Festival in Tampa, Florida celebrates the legend of Jose Gaspar. In what field did Gaspar find his fame?

From Quiz For Your Eyes Only

Answer: Piracy

Tampa is renowned for its tourist and recreational facilities. Within the city limits themselves there are over 165 parks and beaches, including the Lowry Park Zoo with its wide range of interactive exhibits, the African themed Busch Gardens and the thirty acre water park known as Adventure Island. However, the most anticipated of Tampa's celebrations is the one that has been dubbed "Tampa's own Mardi Gras", the Gasparilla Festival. Originally the Gasparilla was nothing more than a parade that formed part of the Florida State Fair, however, when the fair shifted its location, the organisers put together a series of similar themed events such as children's parades, road races, film festivals, music and art exhibitions to make it a standalone attraction. The main thrust of the celebration is a supposed "invasion" by Jose Gaspar and his "Ye Mystik Krewe". The pirates sail across Tampa Bay on their 165 foot pirate ship and are accompanied by a flotilla that seems to grow in number each year. They came ashore and proceed with a victory parade down Bayshore Boulevard where the mayor hands over the keys to the city. Jose Gaspar was, supposedly, a Spanish nobleman who was duped by his country and then turned to piracy. He set up a base in Charlotte's Harbour and proceeded to terrorise the ships that sailed through the Gulf of Mexico in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The thing is that there are no records of this ever happening, nor has his massive treasure horde ever been found. Perhaps M can solve the mystery while he's there and add a cutlass or two to his burgeoning collection.
