Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1 comes from Cairns, North Queensland, a sugar town when he was young. One of his most poignant memories was once a year in the evening, sometime between August and September, there was a spectacular sight. What was it?

Answer: The burning of sugar cane before harvesting

Cairns certainly is a sweet city, wedged in between the Great Barrier Reef a few miles off shore and the lofty peaks of the Great Dividing Range behind the town. It became even more beautiful just before the sugar cane was harvested, which seemed to be planted in every available place on the edge of town. At this time the cane was purposely set afire, (always at night when the winds were lighter) to rid the cane of leaves and pests. This was a spectacular sight and many a night was spent sat on the back patio watching the flames lick the sky. To this day the smell of burnt sugar cane is right up there with the smell of eucalyptus as powerful reminders of 1nn1's Australian childhood.

Question contributed by 1nn1 who, when ten, moved from Cairns to Brisbane 1800 kms / 1200 mi south but incredibly, his first house in Brisbane was on the same street (Bruce Highway) and in the same state (Queensland - Australia's Sunshine State).
2. Smpdit was born in a lovely part of London which has a claim to fame known throughout the world. Which Borough of London is known for its association with a standard for time?

Answer: Greenwich

Greenwich Mean time (GMT) or Prime Meridian is a time standard that references all other time zones, and has done since 1884. There is a metal plate in the path at the top of a hill in Greenwich Park - marking Longtitude 0 degrees- where you can stand with a foot in two time zones.

Question contributed by smpdit, who traded London for Kent, The Garden of England. She still travels to Greenwich quite often though.
3. Phoenix Rising member JCSon was born in Durban Kwa-Zulu Natal on the eastern coast of South Africa. He grew up eating bunny chow, a fast-food dish that originated in the Durban Indian community. What is a bunny chow?

Answer: Hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry

Durban is home to the largest Indian population outside of India. While we cannot know for sure how the bunny chow came to be, its origin has been dated to the 1940s. Originally, it consisted of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with a vegetarian curry, but meat varieties also became popular (e.g. mutton, lamb, beef, chicken, etc.).

This question was crafted by JCSon, all the while salivating, now living in California, a long way from the nearest bunny chow.
4. Arizona is a land of many natural wonders. Of the four wonders listed below, which one is the most recent discovery and the least well-known?

Answer: Kartchner Caverns

Kartchner Caverns were not discovered until 1974. Cavers Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts discovered the cave and enlisted the help of state biologist Erick Campbell in preserving it. They kept it secret for fourteen years while working with the Kartchner family to develop it as a tour cave to protect it from vandals. It is now protected as a state park with daily visits possible. The cave has 2.4 miles of passages filled with amazing cave formations like stalactites and stalagmites among many others.

The Caverns are 51 miles southeast of Tucson. All the other options are in Arizona as well

Having been born and raised in Arizona I was fortunate enough to spend my childhood exploring the wonders of my state. Among the highlights were at age 7 I hiked the Grand Canyon from north rim to south rim and at age 20 I rafted through it.

Meteor Crater was used to simulate lunar conditions for training the Apollo astronauts. Monument Valley has been used extensively by Hollywood as a backdrop for classic Westerns like "The Searchers" (1956), "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949), and "Stagecoach" (1939).

This question was created by Phoenix Rising member tazman6619 who still lives in the state he was born in: The Grand Canyon State.
5. Conveniently located between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, our next Phoenix Rising birthplace was founded in 1925 by Joseph Young. Named for a locale in California and called the "Diamond of the Gold Coast", what is the name of this Florida city famous for its Art and Culture Center?

Answer: Hollywood

Hollywood, Florida had a population of about 147,000 in 2013 making it the 12th largest city in the state. The city is renowned for its miles of beaches, parks, and golf courses. I was born at Memorial Regional Hospital which was in 2015 by far the largest employer in the city. Some other individuals born in Hollywood, Florida include Norman Reedus, Josh Gad, Mike Napoli, and Steve Blake.
This question was contributed by Phoenix Rising team member Triviaballer who still lives in the (American) Sunshine State.
6. Mirfield, West Yorkshire is a small town right in the middle of a conurbation: Leeds; Huddersfield; Dewsbury and Wakefield. Nothing much happens in Mirfield but it is the birthplace of one of "Star Trek"'s biggest stars. Which one?

Answer: Patrick Stewart (Picard)

Mirfield was in the centre of the West Yorkshire textile trade with access to many canals and waterways to bring in raw materials and ship out finished textiles, mainly wool.
Patrick Stewart (now Sir Patrick) was born in Mirfield in 1940. Unlike the other three actors, all part of the original cast, his "Star Trek" fame came from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-94). He went to school in Mirfield, quitting at 15. He worked as a reporter for the local Mirfield paper before quitting to pursue an acting career.
Shatner and Doohan are both Canadians (born in Montreal, 1921 and Vancouver, 1920 respectively), whilst Kelly was an American born in Georgia in 1920.

Question suggested by lg549 who lives far, far away from the place of her birth and now lives in sunny Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
7. Which major Australia port city is located at the mouth of the Swan River in Western Australia and played host to the largest Allied submarine base in the Southern hemisphere during World War II?

Answer: Fremantle

Until the Americans began their surge forward in the Philippines during WWII there were more than 160 submarines operating out of the port at Fremantle. Of these 125 were US, 31 were British and 11 were of Dutch origin. Fremantle, at the mouth of the Swan River, just downstream of Perth, still serves as the main "general" port for Western Australia, however, the ports with the State's major movements are located in the Pilbara region of WA's northwest. These have been fuelled by the State's mining boom.

Fremantle was initially seen as a dumping ground for convicts in its early days but with the deepening of the harbour by C.Y. O'Connor in 1897 it soon became the "Gateway to the West". It was the centre for trade and immigration in WA and, in the process it generated substantial wealth for the area. This can still be seen today within the large number of heritage listed buildings that dominate the city. An eclectic city, Fremantle owes much of its diverse nature to the varied mix of migrants that have made the place their own. These are predominantly of European nature, in particular, the English, Italian and Portuguese people.

Phoenix Rising team member, pollucci19, who was born and raised in Fremantle, now living on the Western Australia coast, a fair few miles south, created this question.
8. Team Mate Tiger51 was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and still lives nearby in East Feliciana Parish. The local Parish Courthouse is the oldest working court house in the state, situated in a town which may have been thought to have been named after a Democratic US President from a neighboring state, yet it was named after a New York Governor. Where is the Parish seat?

Answer: Clinton

Bill Clinton was from neighboring Arkansas, Harry S. Truman was from Missouri which does not border Louisiana. The other two presidents are Republicans.

East Feliciana Parish, in Louisiana. located 30 miles north of the capitol, is a forested area of rolling hills and is plantation country. The parish seat of Clinton is named after New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. The author of this question lives in a small town called Slaughter a few minutes from Clinton; this town is not named after an unfortunate event but first settlers, brothers Will and Joe Slaughter in 1888.

Question contributed by native Pelican Stater, Tiger51.
9. Which of the following is a unique point about Johor, a state in southern peninsular Malaysia?

Answer: It is the southernmost tip of mainland Asia.

The southernmost point of continental Asia is located at Tanjung Piai (Piai Cape) in Pontian, which is a southwestern district of Johor. The coastal area consisting of mudflats and mangroves has been designated a national park. It is also home to resident and migratory birds, including some endangered species. Visitors to the park can stroll along a boardwalk through the mangroves and observe the local mangrove wildlife such as long-tailed macaques, mudskippers, horseshoe crabs and a variety of birds.

In 2003, one year after it opened, the national park was declared a Ramsar site, which is a wetland area deemed internationally important under the Ramsar Convention.

This question was created by Phoenix Rising member purelyqing, a native of Johor.
10. In which English city, the same one in which Phoenix Rising team member zonko was raised (but has never disclosed if he prefers the Sky Blues or the Red Devils), did Charles Rolls and Henry Royce cotton on to the idea of creating motor cars together?

Answer: Manchester

Manchester was an industrial powerhouse in the North West of England during the 18th and 19th centuries with the textile industry being at the forefront of its economy, so much so, that it was nicknamed "Cottonopolis". One of its prominent features is a large network of canals. They greatly aided the city in its efforts to move its freight during the height of the Industrial Revolution. These waterways are still in play today though their purpose is now more of a recreational nature.
Early in 1904 Henry Royce had the pleasure of seeing his first car produced by his Manchester factory. On the 4th of May that year, while in the Midland Hotel, he was introduced to Charles Rolls and the rest, as they say, is history.

This question was created by Phoenix Rising member pollucci19 as a tribute to our beloved team mate Zonko who we are assured, does not drive a Rolls Royce.
