Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell, meaning Church Mountain, stands 1,519 feet on its own on the northern coast of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. In summer, the cone-shaped mountain peak is a brilliant green. The Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in front of it is a popular photo spot. It was also featured on "Game of Thrones."
2. Strokkur

Found in a steaming and sulfur-scented geothermal area, Strokkur is a fascinating active geyser. It regularly erupts every five to ten minutes. The spray usually reaches a height of around 49 to 65 feet but has been known to reach 130 feet. Strokkur is a popular stop on the Golden Circle route along with the Gullfoss waterfall.
3. Fagradalsfjall

Iceland is known as the Land of Fire and Ice because of the mix of many volcanoes, hot springs, and glaciers. One active volcano is Fagradalsfjall found on the Reykjanes Peninsula. It had been dormant for around 6,000 years before erupting in early 2021. It was the first volcano to erupt on the peninsula in over 800 years.
4. Seljalandsfoss

In Icelandic, if a word ends with "-foss" that means it is a waterfall. There are approximately 10,000 waterfalls throughout Iceland!

Seljalandsfoss is one of the most well-known waterfalls on the south coast and can be easily reached from the Ring Road with no hiking. The Ring Road, or Route 1, is the main road that loops the entire country.

Seljalandsfoss is 200 feet tall and cascades over a cliff. It is possible to walk behind the picturesque falls.
5. Skogafoss

Just a few minutes down the Ring Road from Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss is another famous waterfall. The mighty waterfall is 200 feet tall and 82 feet wide. It is possible to walk close to the base and on sunny days a rainbow can be spotted in the spray. There is also a staircase that leads to the top of the falls.

This landmark has been featured in many movies and TV shows including "Game of Thrones," "Thor: The Dark World," and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."
6. Reynisfjara Beach

Just outside of the town of Vik, Reynisfjara Beach is incredible with its black sand. This stretch of shoreline is notorious for its dangerous sneaker waves and the water should not be approached. Even so, people flock here to see the towering black, basalt columns and sea stacks. It is a great place for birdwatching since birds nest along the cliffs.
7. Vatnajokull

Meaning Glacier of Lakes, Vatnajokull is the largest glacier in Iceland, making up about 10% of the country. It is also the second-largest ice cap in Europe after the Severny Island ice cap in Russia. It is 3,100 square miles with an average thickness of 1,250 feet.
8. Vestrahorn

Vestrahorn, which translates to West Mountain, sits on the Stokksnes Peninsula on Iceland's southeastern coast. It is a rugged, dark-colored mountain with two peaks, reaching a height of 1,490 feet. The mountain paired with the black sand beach on its southern side is one of the most popular photography spots in Iceland.
9. Dettifoss

Located in northern Iceland, Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Iceland with an average flow rate of 6,816 cubic feet per second. The waterfall is 330 feet wide and crashes down about 150 feet into the Jokulsargljufur canyon. It is an easy, half-mile hike from the parking lot to the top of the falls.
10. Godafoss

Also in North Iceland, Godafoss is just off the Ring Road and can be viewed from either side of the Skjálfandafljót River after an easy, short walk. This is far from one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland at only 39 feet but it is about 100 feet wide with multiple streams.

This Waterfall of the Gods is about 30 minutes east of Akureyri, a beautiful fjord city known as the Capital of North Iceland.
