Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the view from Victoria Peak overlooking what city?

Answer: Hong Kong

Found at one of the higher points on Hong Kong Island, Victoria Peak provides unparalleled views of the densely-populated city below. Reaching nearly half a kilometre up, it's one of the most-visited destinations in the city. Hong Kong grew to be one of the most important financial centres of the world towards the end of the twentieth century, exploding with massive skyscraper development and taking up most buildable space in the area. Found on the Pearl River Delta, it's only a short trip from Macau, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, China.
2. What is the largest island in the United States?

Answer: Hawai'i

None of the islands of the United States crack the top fifty in terms of size around the world; Hawai'i, specifically 'The Big Island', ranks as number seventy-five on the international scale. In terms of Hawaiian Islands, Maui comes next in the rankings at number two hundred fourteen. Formed by volcanic activity from the island's largest peak, Mauna Kea, Hawai'i reaches a hundred and fifty kilometres across.

In addition to a great number of tropical rainforests and idyllic beaches, the island of Hawai'i is home to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
3. Centrally-located in Southern India, what Indian city is the capital of the state of Telangana?

Answer: Hyderabad

One of India's most-populated cities, Hyderabad is situated in a central, hilly location in the middle of India's southern half. Though far from any coastline, it's a massive destination and home base for millions in Telangana. Established thousands of years ago, Hyderabad eventually grew to become a fortified outpost and then a sprawling metropolis on the banks of the Musi River (which links to the Krishna River and flows into the Bay of Bengal).
4. An informal expanse of the Netherlands, what region contains the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague?

Answer: Holland

Though historically the name 'Holland' has been used to describe most of The Netherlands, the actual Holland region (split into North and South Holland) really only comprises a couple of chunks along the North Sea coastline that also happen to contain some of the nation's largest cities. Because of its spot, low along the seafront and surrounded by water, it's the area of the country that sees a lot of land reclamation efforts through dikes and engineering feats.

The name Holland persisted in many ways outside of the Netherlands as well; when the Dutch explored the globe, colonized lands took the name New Holland. One such spot was what is now known as Australia.
5. What island of Japan is home to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka?

Answer: Honshu

The four main islands of Japan are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku, and Honshu happens to be the largest, being home to four-fifths of the total population of the nation, which isn't all too surprising considering it contains a large number of Japan's largest cities.

Although most of Japan's citizens live close to the coast, the inner portions of Honshu contain beautiful forests, extensive national parks, and the picturesque Mount Fuji. Other cities on Honshu include Kobe, Yokohama, Hiroshima, and Nagano.
6. What lake, one of the Great Lakes of North America, is home to Georgian Bay and Manitoulin Island, the largest lake island in the world?

Answer: Huron

One of the five Great Lakes, Huron comes up in the middle, being part of the large Superior-Michigan-Huron cluster to the northwest. Huron falls, mostly, into Ontario, Canada but the western portion is on the Michigan side of the border. On both sides, the lake is ringed by rocky shorelines, much of it created by the Canadian/Laurentian Shield. What results is a dramatic water's edge, one of the longest freshwater coasts in the world. Manitoulin Island, the largest lake island in the world, happens to contain several lakes of its own. Treasure Island, found in Lake Mindemoya, is an island in a lake on an island in a lake. Island inception, if you will.
7. This photograph shows a sight you might encounter if you visit which of the following destinations?

Answer: Hungary

The image for this displays Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Straddling the Danube River, one side of the city was solely known as Buda while the other side was Pest; they combined officially in 1873. Since then, the city has been a critical location in the grand scale of European history, especially during the wars of the twentieth century. Today it's a massive city for arts, culture, architecture, and finance. Hungary, as a nation, is quote central, managing to border seven different countries.

The Danube forms its northwestern borders with Austria and Slovakia before proceeding south to create the Croatia-Serbia border.
8. What Asian mountain range contains the most peaks topping out above 7,000m in elevation?

Answer: The Himalayas

Home to the highest peaks in the world, only Asia contains peaks with elevations higher than seven kilometres above sea level, and the majority of those are in the Himalayas, home to Mount Everest, K2, Annapurna, and the other greats. Forming a natural border starting at Pakistan and cutting across India, China, Tibet, and Bhutan, the Himalayas occur where the Eurasian tectonic plate is met by the Indian Plate.

The range's glaciers form rivers that become the key sacred waterways for Northern India (including the Ganges) while beyond to the northeast, the Gobi Desert is created by its climate effects.
9. Which of these cities is found further north in Vietnam?

Answer: Hanoi

Hanoi also happens to be the capital of Vietnam, being established as such in 1976 after the Vietnam War. Found in the Red River Delta it's a vast city with extensive influence from other nations due to foreign occupation. Its beautiful temples and pagodas blend in with dense urban build-up, especially in its central core.

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. Found further in the south, it's a financial hub and one of the more significant modern hubs for Southeast Asia. Formerly known as Saigon, it's a vibrant destination with stellar nightlife.
10. One of the largest cities in the Caribbean, what port capital shares the island nation with Varadero, Holguín, and Matanzas?

Answer: Havana, Cuba

All of these cities in question are Cuban, but Havana is the long-established capital of the island nation, having been build by Spanish explorers hundreds of years ago, positioning them in a convenient, secure location upon which they could build seaside forts and trading posts.

In the contemporary era, Havana is one of the most populated Caribbean cities, and one that's been at least a bit sheltered by nearby American influence (especially interesting since Florida is only a few hundred miles north).

As such, visiting Old Havana might seem like a trip into the past; weather-worn, brightly-painted buildings in old world styles can be found throughout.
