Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Cuban island, known as the The Isle of Youth is well known for which of the following reasons?

Answer: Its numerous prisons

The Isle of Youth is located south of Cuba and is the second largest island of Cuba. It is known for its large prison known as the Presidio Modelo. Fidel Castro was a prisoner here for two years, as were numerous political prisoners. Conditions were deplorable and torture was rumored to be used to extract information.

The prison still stands today and has been turned into a museum. The island is still home to five other prisons that are still in use. A large portion of the residents of this island are unable to enjoy its beauty.
2. Inaccessible Island, found in the South Atlantic, is part of which island group, known as the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world?

Answer: Tristan da Cunha

There is more than one island with this name but the island in Tristan da Cunha is the only one that meets all the criteria in the question. This tiny speck of land is actually an extinct volcano that does not have any permanent human population. The waters around the island are very dangerous, and if you manage to land on it, it is covered in dense forest, that makes the island almost impenetrable. What treasures are hidden here? Will we ever know?
3. Found in Lake Kivu, to which continent would you need to travel if you wanted to visit Idjwi Island?

Answer: Africa

Idjwi, sometimes spelled Ijwi, is the tenth largest inland island in the world. Found in Lake Kivu, this island belongs to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa. This island is probably not in your bucket list as malnutrition and disease are rampant. A lack of natural resources has delayed economic growth and inhibited tourism.
4. The Greek island of Ios is located in which of these bodies of water?

Answer: Aegean Sea

This image shows the lovely Koumpara Beach on the island of Ios found in the Aegean Sea. It is one of the few locations on the island with easy access by boat. Most of the island has high vertical cliffs that rise straight from the ocean. The island is dotted with prehistoric digs that have been exceptionally well-preserved.

The main economies on this picturesque island are tourism and fishing.
5. The island of Iwo Jima was the location of an important battle during World War II. What is the English translation of its name?

Answer: Sulfur Island

This image shows a view of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima, Japan. The hill was the location of one of the most famous photos of the war, displaying one of the raisings of the American flag. The name 'Iwo Jima' means 'Sulfur Island' and is a reference to the smell of sulfur that comes up from the volcanic fumaroles that dot the island.

The island became an American possession after the war and was finally returned to Japan in 1968.
6. The Isle of Man is the largest island in the world without a river.

Answer: False

The unique Isle of Man is located in the center of the Irish Sea and is home to the Sulby River which is 10.5 miles (17 km) long. Although the island is associated with England, it is possibly best described as an internally self-governing dependent territory of the Crown but is not considered a part of the United Kingdom.

Its cool summers and mild winters bring in tourists all year around.
7. Why do many of the homes in Iceland appear to be green?

Answer: They are covered in plants.

Icelandic turf houses are stone (usually) houses with wooden roofs, upon which turf was placed. Grass and food crops were planted on the roofs and provided insulation and sometimes a nice garden area. Iceland is home to multiple geysers, volcanos, and fjords. If you are looking for an interesting country to visit, this island nation might be just the place you are looking for, as long as you can handle its cold climate.
8. If I wanted to go surfing in Donegal Bay, and then enjoy some blaa, to which "I"sland would I need to travel?

Answer: Ireland

I would have to visit the lush island nation of Ireland in the North Atlantic. Donegal Bay has a somewhat funnel shape that brings in great surfing waves. Blaa is a doughy biscuit, often served in the city of Waterford. Although the island was once covered in forests, it is now green pasture land.

A quick trip to the Killarney National Park will provide a glimpse into the forested past and allow a visitor a chance to see some of the endemic wildlife. The photo is of the Giant's Causeway also found on the island of Ireland, in Northern Ireland.
9. Indonesia is one of the most populated island nations in the world, and home to the volcanic island called Krakatoa.

Answer: True

Comprised of thousands of different islands, Indonesia is the most population island nation in the world. Included islands include Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Komodo and part of New Guinea, just to name a few. Because of the geographical make up of this island nation, there are multiple languages, cultures and religions to be found in this Asian Garden of Eden. With a population that measured over 250 million people in 2004, it is usually listed as one of the top five most-populous nations in the world.

This photo shows the world famous volcano on the island of Krakatoa, which is thought to have exploded in 1883, in one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history.
10. Ingram island is one of the many islands found in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Victoria, Australia.

Answer: False

While Ingram Island is in the Great Barrier Reef, it is not off the coast of Victoria, Australia. It is off the coast of Queensland, Australia, in the Coral Sea. It is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is uninhabited. It is a common spot for cruise ships to stop, especially when it is time for the hatching of sea turtles.
