Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the Greater Sunda Islands, what four-letter Indonesian location is the most populated island on Earth?

Answer: Java

The world's highest-populated island, Java is one of the largest islands of Indonesia and it contains many of the nation's largest cities (including Jakarta and Yogyakarta). Created by a string of active volcanoes millions of years ago, Java is home to a wide array of ecosystems that support a multitude of diverse plant and animal life, and it's unsurprising that archaeological finds point to it as a key home for early man (specifically homo erectus). Though initially a highly agricultural location, the importance of Java, if not for Indonesians than for world trade, diversified upon settlement of the Dutch East India Company.

In the modern day it's a vibrant and distinctive land.
2. Found in the Alberta Rockies in Canada, what location is home to the Columbia Icefield?

Answer: Jasper National Park

Sitting entirely within the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Jasper National Park is home to just a handful of Canada's natural beauty, being a go-to destination for the picturesque mountains, crystal-clear waters, and imposing ice fields. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, Jasper was long-used as a home for Indigenous people, particularly because of its spot on caribou migration patterns, and because of this it was an important site for the fur trade.

It was made, quite early, into a National Park due to the creation of the railway, allowing for it to develop a tourism industry along with Banff, a short distance to the south.
3. South Korea's largest island, which of these locations is found south of the Asian mainland?

Answer: Jeju

Just over eighty kilometres south of mainland South Korea, Jeju Island was formed by the shield volcano rising from its center-- Hallasan. Jeju City makes up the island's north half while Seogwipo sits to the south, and both offer beautifully unique settings along rocky coastlines in the Korea Strait. Jeju is relatively warm year-round, making it a typical vacation destination for Koreans.

It's partly because of this that the flightpath between Seoul and Jeju is considered one of the busiest air routes in the world.
4. The third-largest Caribbean island is what nation, home to the cities of Port Antonio, Spanish Town, and Montego Bay?

Answer: Jamaica

Part of the West Indies, Jamaica is a laid-back nation that primarily deals in the tourist trade due to its beautiful beaches, Caribbean climate, and unique culture, responsible for many different influential music and dance styles prevalent in Western media. Though not a massive country, it is home to a number of larger destinations including the cities mentioned in the question as well as its capital, Kingston, which sits on a protected harbour along with the famous pirate hotspot, Port Royal, which rests on the end of the Palisadoes.
5. Which of these, notably, is NOT a national capital city?

Answer: Johannesburg

While Johannesburg is the capital of South Africa's smallest province, Gauteng, it is not one of the nation's three capital cities (those would be Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein). Instead, Jo'burg is the most populated city in South Africa, containing millions to be one of the biggest major centres of the African continent. Sitting in the middle of the country, far from the ocean, it was built to accommodate a gold rush in the late 19th century.

Despite a tumultuous history involving class and race, it would grow to become one of the most important financial hubs for this part of the world and one of the most diverse in Africa.
6. Most people making pilgrimage to Mecca are likely to fly through which Saudi Arabian city on the Red Sea?

Answer: Jeddah

Part of Mecca Province and situated on the Red Sea, the city of Jeddah is the second-largest in Saudi Arabia and one of its most visited due to its proximity to both Mecca and Medina, both a short ride out of the city limits to the east and north (respectively).

Inhabited for more than two and a half millennia, Jeddah is one of the Middle East's oldest and most important historical ports and in more modern geopolitical times it acted as a key port of call for European seamen bound for Asia. Today, it's a cultural home to many ethnicities, and its food and art are reflective of this mixture.
7. The Wadi Rum Desert is in what country?

Answer: Jordan

One of the more fascinating and otherworldly landscapes of the Middle East, the Wadi Rum Desert of Southern Jordan is often used as a stand-in, in films, for the terrain of Mars. In reality, it's an unexpected tourist destination in a less-visited region, particularly because it boasts clear night skies and facilitates adventure sports of all kinds. East of Aqaba, Wadi Rum takes up more than 700 square kilometres of desert in a dried-out river valley and, adorned with striking sandstone mountains, it was made into a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
8. Considered a Bailiwick, which of these locations is part of the Channel Islands and, historically, has been overseen by the United Kingdom?

Answer: Jersey

Though only twenty-three kilometres off the coast of Normandy, the island of Jersey is actually part of the British Crown Dependency (though it wasn't always the case). Self-governing, it is only loosely connected to the Commonwealth in the modern day though it has, historically, used the British Pound Sterling as its currency and it does share much of the culture of the British Isles. Jersey is otherwise quite the small island destination with its capital, St Helier, being the largest city in the Channel Islands. Most of its land is used for agriculture.
9. Which of these U.S. destinations is furthest from the others?

Answer: Juneau, AK

Although the other three are distinctly far apart, considering that they're in somewhat different parts of the Continental United States, Juneau, Alaska is much further than the others, being over three thousand miles away from the closest option here, Jefferson City, Missouri.

Juneau, otherwise, is the capital city of Alaska. Found along the Alaskan Panhandle, it's quite the remote destination, and because of the vastness of the state, Juneau's borders are quite extensive. Its jurisdiction is larger than each of the two smallest states as it is. Found on the Gastineau Channel, it's surrounded by the Boundary Mountains and experiences the coldest average temperatures of any U.S. capital city, naturally. Even then, it's over eight hundred miles from the Arctic Circle.
10. The tallest mountain in Oman goes by what name?

Answer: Jebel Shams

Reaching an elevation of over 3,000m, Jebel Shams is amongst the Jebel Akhdar Mountains, which make up the curved northeastern coast of Oman. Translating to Mountain of the Sun, it's a popular tourist destination for sightseeing, especially since the Al Nakhur Canyon, created by the range here, is similar in appearance to the Grand Canyon. Most of Oman is otherwise quite an expansive desert, so most of its major cities (including its capital, Muscat), sit between the mountains and the Indian Ocean.
