Schleswig-Holstein is the most northerly Land, being just south of Denmark. It borders both the North Sea on the west and the Baltic Sea in the east. The capital of Schleswig-Holstein is Kiel, which is also the largest city. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern lies to the east of Schleswig-Holstein, with a coast on the Baltic Sea. Although Rostock, on the coast, is the largest city, the capital is Schwerin.

Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) is on the west of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Hanover is both the largest city and the capital of Lower Saxony. The city-state of Hamburg lies between Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Lower Saxony. Bremen, another of the city-states, is surrounded by Lower Saxony.

Brandenburg lies to the south of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It has a border with Poland in the east. The capital, and largest city, of Brandenburg is Potsdam. The third city-state, Berlin, is surrounded by Brandenburg. Saxony (Sachsen) is south of Brandenburg, and has a border with Czechia in the south-east. The largest city is Leipzig, but Dresden is the capital.

Between Saxony and Lower Saxony are Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) to the north-east and Thuringia (Thüringen) to the south-west. Although it is slightly smaller than Halle, Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt. Erfurt is both the capital and the largest city of Thuringia. North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) lies south-west of Lower Saxony and has borders with the Netherlands and Belgium in the west. Düsseldorf is its capital city, although Cologne is larger.

Hesse (Hessen) is west of Thuringia. Its largest city is Germany's financial centre, Frankfurt. Wiesbaden, on the River Rhine, is the capital of Hesse. Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz) lies south of North Rhine-Westphalia and south-west of Hesse. It borders Luxembourg in the west, and France in the south. The largest city in the Land is its capital, Mainz, which is situated just across the River Rhine from Wiesbaden in Hesse.

South of Hesse and Thuringia are Baden-Württemberg in the west and Bavaria (Bayern) in the east. Bavaria is the largest Land; it borders Czechia to the east and has a border with Austria to the south. Baden-Württemberg has borders along the River Rhine with Switzerland to the south and France in the west. The capital, and largest city, of Bavaria is Munich. Stuttgart is also the largest city and the capital of Baden-Württemberg.

Saarland is the smallest of the Flächenländer; it borders France and Luxembourg to the west. To the east and north it is bordered by Rhineland-Palatinate. The largest city, Saarbrücken, is the capital of Saarland.

Schaffhausen, Fribourg, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, and Basel-Landschaft, are all Swiss cantons. Liechtenstein is a small landlocked state situated between Switzerland and Austria. Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzburg, and Styria are all provinces in Austria.
