Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The Mediterranean Sea is considered central to the development of Western Civilization. It is a large body of water surrounded by the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa. At the height of the Roman Empire, they called the sea "Mare Nostrum" (Latin for "Our Sea") to demonstrate the areas under their rule.
The Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Strait of Gibraltar. In the 19th century, the Suez Canal was constructed linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, thus establishing a key trade route connecting Europe to Asia.
Given the size of the Mediterranean Sea, it includes a number of other water bodies and marginal seas. A brief description of the seas covered in this quiz is as follows:
- The Libyan Sea is located north of the African coast and as can be expected based on its name, it borders the country of Libya.
- The Levantine Sea is the easternmost part of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders the historical region of Levant which includes the present-day countries of Turkey, Lebanon, and Israel.
- The Tyrrhenian Sea is found off the western coast of Italy.
- The Aegean and Ionian Seas both border Greece.
- The Balearic Sea is also known as the Iberian Sea. It separates the Balearic Islands from mainland Spain.
- The Alboran Sea is the westernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea. Its west end connects to the Strait of Gibraltar which then connects to the Atlantic Ocean.
- The Sea of Sardinia separates the Italian island of Sardinia from the Spanish Balearic Islands.
- The Ligurian Sea lies between the Italian Peninsula and the French island of Corsica.
- The Adriatic Sea separates the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan Peninsula.
The incorrect options:
- The Tasman Sea lies in the Southern Hemisphere between Australia and New Zealand.
- The Andaman Sea is found in Asia and borders the countries of India, Thailand, and Myanmar, among others.
- The Bering Sea is located in the North Pacific Ocean, between Russia and the United States.
- The Sargasso Sea is the only sea without land borders. It lies within the Atlantic Ocean.
- The Baltic Sea is found in Northern Europe and borders the Baltic countries of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania, along with others like Poland and Denmark.
