1. Columbus would have known this sea well. The Italian Riviera is to the north and the French island of Corsica to the south.

Answer: Ligurian Sea

The Ligurian Sea is named for the Italian province of Liguria, whose capital Genoa - birthplace of Christopher Columbus - lies at the northern point of the sea. This area was the site of the last naval engagement of the Second World War, the Battle of Ligurian Sea, when British destroyers foiled a German mine-laying operation in March 1945.
2. This sea is west of Asiatic Turkey and east of mainland Greece, while in the middle are many islands familiar to the heroes of Homer and Virgil.

Answer: Aegean Sea

The bigger of the numerous Greek islands in the Aegean, such as Lesbos and Rhodes, are now favourite tourist destinations, but in mythical times were visited by heroes such as Virgil's Aeneas and Homer's Odysseus (aka Ulysses) on their journeys home from the Trojan War.
3. Corfu and Kefalonia are favourite destinations in this sea, which is between the boot of Italy and the Greek Peloponnese peninsula.

Answer: Ionian Sea

The Ionian Sea includes many Greek islands with popular holiday resorts and luxury hotels. Corfu is where the late Duke of Edinburgh was born, and Kefalonia (or Cephallonia) is where Captain Corelli was posted, together with his mandolin.
4. Go east from the Spanish Costas and you will find a group of holiday islands known by the same name as this sea.

Answer: Balearic Sea

Part of Spain, the Balearic archipelago consists of four large islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera) and a number of smaller islands lying close to the bigger ones. The coast of Spain to the west stretches from the Costa Brava to the Costa Blanca and includes the city of Barcelona.
5. Those Crusaders who went by boat would cross this last sea before landing in Palestine. This easternmost part of the Mediterranean borders Israel and Egypt among other countries, and surrounds Cyprus.

Answer: Levantine Sea

The part of the Levantine Sea between Cyprus and Turkey is called the Cilician Sea. In the north lie the Gulf of İskenderun named for Alexander the Great, and the Gulf of Antalya which includes that Turkish holiday town.
6. In the northernmost part of the Mediterranean you will find Venice at the head of this sea that separates Italy from the Balkans.

Answer: Adriatic

The countries with coasts on the Adriatic are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia. The Adriatic contains more than 1,300 islands, many of which form a chain along the Croatian coast and are favourite summer holiday destinations.
7. South of the Spanish region of Andalucia, and north of the African countries of Morocco and Algeria (part of the infamous Barbary Coast), you will find this sea, the nearest part of the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean.

Answer: Alboran Sea

The Alboran sea forms the westernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea, and was once the hunting ground of corsairs - pirates - from the Ottoman empire, but also including Spanish ones encouraged by Ferdinand and Isabella when they were expelling the Moors from their country!
This sea has the interesting feature that cold water from the Atlantic flows eastwards on the surface while warmer but heavier salty water flows out of the Mediterranean at deeper levels. This vertical circulation is known as a gyre.
8. With Sicily at your back and facing north, you are looking out at this sea that contains a chain of volcanic islands including the island that gave volcanoes their name.

Answer: Tyrrhenian Sea

Islands here include the Aeolian Islands in the south, one of which is the island of Vulcano which was thought by the Romans to be the chimney of the god Vulcan's forge. The volcano on Stromboli is still active. The whole area lies over the boundary between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates. The Bay of Naples and the famous islands of Capri and Ischia are also in this sea.
9. Connecting the Mediterranean sea with the Atlantic Ocean, this passageway separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from Morocco in Africa.

Answer: Strait of Gibraltar

A busy and dangerous waterway not only because it is the only way by sea into the Mediterranean from the west, but also because of fast currents flowing over the Gibraltar sill. The Rock of Gibraltar and a lower peak on the African side are called the "Pillars of Hercules", a reference to the myth that as one of his twelve labours Hercules smashed through a mountain to create the channel.
10. The site of a disastrous (to the Allies) episode in World War One, this is where the Mediterranean connects to the Sea of Marmara.

Answer: Dardanelles

Dardanelles is of great strategic importance being part of the passage between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. A narrow strait, it separates the European and Asian parts of Turkey.
