Missouri is a state in the central part of the United States. It borders eight different states, which, along with Tennessee, is the most by any state. Missouri joined the Union in 1821 which made it the 24th state to join. It is the 21st largest state in the United States. Jefferson City is the capital.
--Kansas City is a major city in the U.S., and was the most populated state in Missouri according to the 2020 census, with more than 500,000 people. It is home to the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, and the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball.
--Springfield was the third largest city, trailing St. Louis, with a population over 170,000. It is located in the southern part of the state in the Ozark Mountains.
--Columbia is located in central Missouri, and is home to the University of Columbia. It has a population over 120,000.
--Independence is located in the far west corner in Missouri, and is about 10 miles away from Kansas City. It also has a population over 120,000. Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States was born here, and the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum is located here.
--Moberly is located in central Missouri, about 30 miles away from Columbia. Its population is around 14,000. Omar Bradley, a general in World War II went to high school in Moberly. Coincidentally, so did I, as I was born and raised in Moberly.
--Branson is a city located in southern Missouri, near the Missouri-Arkansas border. Although it only has a population around 13,000, it is one of the biggest tourist cities in the state, with many entertainment venues, such as Dolly Parton's Stampede Dinner Attraction, and Silver Dollar City, an amusement park. It is also known for concerts.
--Kirksville is a city in the northern part of the state, which a population over 17,000. It is home to Truman State University, which was named after Harry Truman.
--Hannibal is a town in the northeastern part of the state with a population around 17,000, and is the boyhood home of author Mark Twain. There are several tourist attractions in Hannibal, including Mark Twain Cave, in which tours have been given since 1886. The Mark Twain Riverboat is another attraction, which allows guests to take a cruise on the Mississippi River.
--Warrensburg is located in the northwest, and is about 60 miles from Kansas City. It has a population around 20,000, and is home to the University of Central Missouri, which is my alma mater .
--Joplin is located in the southwestern portion of the state, and has a population around 50,000. The city made national headlines in 2011, when an F5 tornado came through and destroyed much of the city, and killed more than 150 people.
--Sedalia has a population over 20,000, and is located in west-central Missouri. It is known for hosting the Missouri State Fair each summer. Ragtime musician Scott Joplin lived in Sedalia in the 1890s as a piano instructor, and composed many of his works in Sedalia.
--Rolla is located in the southern part of the state, and has a population around 20,000. It is home to a prominent technological research university, Missouri University of Science and Technology. United States national park, Mark Twain National Forest makes its headquarters in Rolla.
