Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of the following does NOT have a statue on the outside grounds of Missouri's capitol?

Answer: Harry S Truman

There IS a bust of Missouri's only president INSIDE the capitol in the Hall of Fame, and across the street from the capitol stands the Truman State Office Building. When it was first erected, the name "Harry S. Truman" was chiseled into the rock front.

This of course had to be removed and redone since Truman's middle name is just S, not an abbreviation. His family wanted to honor both grandfathers, -Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young; hence, the S. The capitol grounds also have on display a small Statue of Liberty and a huge monument to Lewis and Clark who stopped by here during their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase.
2. Jefferson City lies along the Missouri River. How many other state capitals are on the Mighty Mo?

Answer: 2

Pierre, SD, and Bismarck, ND, also border the Missouri. In fact Missouri is seemingly in an endless dispute with those 2 states as to who should control water usage from the Big Muddy.
3. Which term is NOT used by natives of Jefferson City when they refer to their hometown?

Answer: TJ City

Since President Thomas Jefferson was responsible for securing this land from France for the United States (La. Purchase, 1804), the people of Missouri decided to officially name their capital the City of Jefferson. There is a statue at the capitol depicting the signing of the document that made this land American.
4. Several antebellum homes still stand in Jefferson City and were present to see the arrival of which Confederate general's army during the Civil War?

Answer: Sterling Price

General Sterling Price's army approached the city from the south, advancing on the capitol, but did not attack, believing that there was a large Union contingent present. Jefferson City was spared in the Civil War.
5. Jefferson City's only public high school has a long history of football success under now-retired coach Pete Adkins. What is the mascot of Jefferson City High School?

Answer: Jaybirds

The Jaybirds (or Jays for short) hold the record for large-school Missouri state football championships (10). Singer Melissa Etheridge even highlights the career of Coach Pete in her video "No Souvenirs", part of which was filmed in his home and at Adkins Stadium.
6. The capitol in Jefferson City is home to original artwork by whom?

Answer: Thomas Hart Benton

The capitol's House of Representatives lounge is decorated with huge murals painted by Benton, depicting many eras of Missouri history. The dome is modeled after the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Just outside of the city is the small town of Taos whose St. Francis Xavier Church is home to three original oil paintings by Michelangelo's contemporary, Guido Reni.
7. The highest point in Jefferson City is the top of the neoclassical dome of the capitol. Which mythological deity adorns the summit and watches over the capital city?

Answer: Ceres

Ceres, Roman goddess of agriculture, used to face north towards Callaway County across the Missouri River. But since the Kingdom of Callaway never officially rejoined the Union after the Civil War, Ceres was rotated southward, officially turning her back on the rebel county and its grain fields.
8. Ever since 1836 the Missouri State Penitentiary has been located in Jefferson City. Which of these infamous criminals was NOT a guest in the pen?

Answer: Mobster Al Capone

After 168 years, the old penitentiary has been dismantled and a new one has been erected on the east end of Jefferson City. The old prison grounds are now being redesigned for a new federal courthouse, commercial development, and park.
9. What major catastrophe befell Jefferson City in the summer of 1993?

Answer: flood

The 500-year flood occurred as the rains overfilled the Missouri River Bottom all across the state. The only access to the city's bridge over the river was blocked when the dual-lane highway 54 was washed downstream.
10. What is the largest nationality/religion in Jefferson City and central Missouri?

Answer: German-Catholic

Jesuit missionary Father Ferdinand Helias first organized several churches in central Missouri in the 1840s. The oldest church in Jefferson City is St. Peter's Catholic Church next to the capitol. According to the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA.com), there were 26,234 Catholics in Cole County with the next largest denomination being Southern Baptist at 10,260. Each year there is a festival on the south side of town celebrating the area's German heritage.

In addition, the website, www.census.gov/census2000/states/mo/.html, indicates that the highest percent (35.8) of the state's population claims German genealogy while the next highest percentage is Irish at 10.1.
