Nags Head, Emerald Isle, and Topsail Island are three of the most famous North Carolina beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. The state got the nickname, "The Tarheel State" in reference to the tar, pitch, and turpentine produced in this southern state.
5. Virginia

Most of Virginia's geography is not on the Atlantic Ocean. The state is known for the Appalachian Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley. But Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Bay provide access to the Atlantic Ocean.
6. Maryland

Eastern Maryland is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and it shares Chesapeake Bay with Virginia which forms part of its border. Ocean City, Maryland is known for its boardwalk and as a great tourist area for those looking for the beach.
7. Delaware

Delaware was the first state added to the United States and is situated right between Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Dewey Beach are three of the most popular beaches in Delaware.
8. New Jersey

New Jersey has over 130 miles of coast on the Atlantic Ocean. You can't picture the state and not think about the Jersey Shore, the boardwalk on Atlantic City, and the sandy beaches that attract tourists every summer.
9. New York

New York City alone is at the meeting of the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean. While most of the big city is not on the Atlantic directly, you can go to Coney Island in Brooklyn and experience the ocean. The Atlantic Ocean Basin covers an area of about 914 square miles of New York state.
10. Connecticut

There is a debate about whether Connecticut actually touches the Atlantic Ocean since it's directly touching the Long Island Sound. The very eastern tip of Connecticut touches the Block Island Sound. Both are considered part of the Atlantic Ocean.
11. Rhode Island

Rhode Island is nicknamed the "Ocean State" for good reason. Despite being the smallest state, Rhode Island features over 400 miles of beach on the Atlantic Ocean. Newport is a popular coastal city that is a favorite destination for many tourists.
12. Massachusetts

Massachusetts not only borders the Atlantic Ocean to the east, it also shares a land border with Connecticut and Rhode Island to its south, New Hampshire and Vermont to its north, and upper New York on its western side.
13. New Hampshire

New Hampshire only shares an 18 mile coast on the Atlantic Ocean but it still makes the list. Situated between Massachusetts and Maine, the northeastern state has the least amount of border of any state with the Atlantic Ocean.
14. Maine

When you think about Maine, you might picture its famous lobster caught in the Atlantic Ocean. Maine's coastline isn't known for soft sandy beaches but more of a rugged terrain on the coast. In addition, Maine shares a border with two Canadian provinces, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
