USA - Specific Regions Trivia Questions

1. As recently as 1901 efforts had been made to annex the Florida Panhandle into which other state?

From Quiz
Panhandles of the US

Answer: Alabama

The Florida Panhandle is the extension of the state's northwestern boundary, approximately 200 miles long and between 50 and 100 miles wide. The state of Alabama lies to its north and west and Georgia to its north. Throughout much of its history the people living in the Florida Panhandle have had much more in common with their compatriots in Alabama, and travel to it was much easier than to eastern or southern Florida. People in Alabama Territory had requested Congress include the Panhandle in 1811 while Florida was still a Spanish possession. They repeated the request when Alabama was granted statehood in 1819. In 1822, 1826, and 1840 residents of western Florida added their voice by requesting that they incorporated into Alabama. In 1869 and 1873 the request was thwarted by the Alabama legislature balking at the proposed price, and in 1901 a final negotiation failed. The state capital of Tallahassee and the important naval air base at Pensacola are the two most important cities in the region.

2. The first Dutch settlers arrived in 1614, near modern-day Albany. There they constructed a short-lived fort named Fort Nassau. What perennial problem caused the abandonment of the settlement in 1617?

From Quiz A Short History of the Hudson River Valley

Answer: flooding

The Dutch had settled on Castle Island in the Hudson River. The island frequently flooded, and the settlers were unable to stop it. They abandoned Fort Nassau in 1617. Today, Castle Island no longer exists but has been incorporated into the Port of Albany.

3. In Wisconsin there is an area where the Ice Age did not level the land, so some of it looks much as it did 19,000 years ago. What is this area called?

From Quiz Heart of America

Answer: Wisconsin Dells

The word 'dells' is from the French 'dalles' for narrows. The Dells was at the margin of the continental glacier but was never covered by glacial ice sheets. It has been called the 'Driftless Area'. Rocks found in the area are over 500 million years old, pushed in by the glacier. There is a five mile gorge with 100 foot cliffs that is a place of extreme beauty. Most of the area is protected by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and is not open to the general public. Boat rides are available to see parts of the area. The town of Wisconsin Dells is a mecca for various theme parks unrelated to the Dells.

4. How many US states border the Pacific Ocean?

From Quiz The Left Coast

Answer: 5

California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii all border the Pacific. Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, but the other three were all admitted in the 19th century, before several of the states in the interior of the country.

5. Which U.S. state has Dade City located on the Withlacoochee River?

From Quiz U.S. East Coast Rivers

Answer: Florida

Originating in Florida's Green Swamp, the Withlacoochee empties into the Gulf of Mexico. It's also known as the Crooked River, as it flows west, then north, then northwest, and then west again.

6. Wedowee, Alabama. Man, like, how do you even PRONOUNCE that? Well, phonetically, it would be sort of like this: Wee-DOW-wee. Its name can be traced to the Native American Creek Indian language. What did the word 'wedowee' mean, in that tongue?

From Quiz Why Did They Call The Place That?

Answer: old water

The tiny town of Wedowee in eastern Alabama near the Georgia border had a population of roughly 823 in 2011. The name in the Creek language meant something like "old water". (Ironically, considering the source of its name, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, the overall population consisted of roughly 69% White; 30% Black; with JUST BARELY over 1/10th of 1% NATIVE AMERICAN, and with a very small percentage of other races represented.)

7. What is the "Southwick Jog"?

From Quiz New England Fun Facts

Answer: The small notch in the southern border of Massachusetts

Massachusetts gained the area, which dips into the otherwise uniform Massachusetts-Connecticut border, in 1804 to compensate for earlier survey errors, and for losing several towns to Connecticut in the 1600s and 1700s. This fun fact was brought to you by gruffybear.

8. Father Pedro Font named which mountains that are located in California?

From Quiz Western U.S. Mountains and Mountain Ranges

Answer: Sierra Nevada Mountains

Pedro Font, a member of the De Anza Expedition, was on the Coast Ranges to the west and saw a mountain range to the east across the Central Valley in 1776. He labeled the mountains "Sierra Nevada" on a map in 1777, even though that name was used earlier on a few smaller ranges. Translated from Spanish as "snow-covered mountains", the mountain range is 400 miles (644 km) long with twelve peaks over 14,000 feet (4,267 m) elevation.

9. What is the highest point on the Appalachian Trail?

From Quiz Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Part 2

Answer: Clingman's Dome

10. What term is given to strong ocean-enhanced storms which can paralyze coastal New England cities with heavy snow and high winds during winter? They are named after the direction of the wind that is associated with them.

From Quiz Southern New England Weather

Answer: Nor'easters

Nor'easters can bury cities such as Boston under feet of snow and the howling wind can create blizzard conditions, making travel impossible at times. These storms usually intensify rapidly as they move along the coastline of the Northeast in the winter.

11. Washington DC is home to a remarkable obelisk. Which equally remarkable man from American history does it commemorate?

From Quiz US East Coast Landmarks

(submitted by player barrywlj)

14. The longest river in New England is 407 miles (655 km) long and is also the most powerful. It forms the boundary between two states. What is its name?

From Quiz New England Rivers

Answer: Connecticut River

From Quiz My "Big Blue" - Lake Tahoe

Answer: Casinos

While there are 11 casinos on the Nevada side of the lake (six on the south shore and five on the north), the largest and most well-known clubs are located in Stateline, NV, adjacent to South Lake Tahoe. Driving on Highway 50 eastbound from California into Nevada, you would first see Harvey's Resort Hotel and Casino on the left, and Harrah's Resort on the right. Further on the left is the Horizon Resort, with the MontBleu (formally Caesar's Tahoe) across the highway on the right. All four offer world-class amenities in their casinos as well as their high-rise hotels, each having spectacular views of the lake. (Author's note) I had the opportunity to work at Harvey's for 15 years, and it was a wonderful experience. Please say hello to all my friends the next time you drop in, and..good luck!

From Quiz The Adirondack 46

Answer: Mt. Haystack

After the storm had cleared, Swale noticed that the 'Palmyra' was grounded by a coral reef bed. Swale had to rock the big ship gently back and forth to loosen her from the reef bed. He eventually found a way through the coral and anchored the 'Palmyra' to an old dock that was located on the beaches of the island. After surveying the island, Captain Swale went back to Hawaii to claim his discovery. Since he discovered the island, he was able to choose the name. He named the island after his ship, 'Palmyra'.

The Nebraska Panhandle is the western extension of the state, approximately 100 miles east to west and 125 miles north to south. It is about 2/3 the north-to-south length of the rest of the state. The largest city in the Nebraska Panhandle is Scotts Bluff. It's also the location of the geographical feature Chimney Rock and the whimsical Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge using abandoned automobiles instead of monoliths. The region of the Nebraska Panhandle differs from the rest of the state in that is more pasture land than agricultural, and many residents feel more in common with the neighboring state of Wyoming to its west.
