Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The capital of the Republic of Ireland is, of course, Dublin - in old Gaelic Dubh Linn. What does this mean?

Answer: Black Pool

Dublin has two Gaelic (Irish) translations, the older being Dubh (black) and Linn (pool or hole). In modern Irish the city is known as Baile Atha Cliath (the town of the hurdled ford). When Irish place names were Anglicized they were not translated, thus often losing the original meaning. The word "baile" town was mostly anglicized to bally thus the vast number of Irish place names that have Bally as part of the name.

Prior to South Africa becoming a democratic republic, there were only 4 provinces plus Namibia (then called South West Africa) as a protectorate. Each province also has its own capital.

7. There is only one major waterfall on the 'Father of Waters', the mighty Mississippi River. It is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. What is the name of this waterfall?

Answer: St. Anthony Falls

The present St. Anthony Falls is a series of locks and dams built over the original falls. The dams were constructed without care and no photograph or painting exists of the falls before they were destroyed. There are a few paintings, but they are simply the imagination of the artists. For those of you who heard about the I35W bridge collapse, the falls are just upstream, in fact the downstream entrance to the lower locks is visible in many of the pictures of the fallen bridge.
