Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Planning his itinerary, Slag was poring over a tattered old world map. "Boss!" he announced, "I wanna go to Palmerston. Looks like a mainland location on a harbour in the Tropic of Capricorn. I could bring you a crocodile-skin belt!" "Slag, you dolt!" snorted Captain Temujin, "that map is at least a hundred years old!" By what name has Palmerston been known since 1911?

Answer: Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

In 1839, HMS Beagle was in the Timor Sea north of Australia on its 3rd survey voyage. It sailed into a harbour which was given the name Darwin Harbour
after naturalist Charles Darwin who had been aboard Beagle's previous voyage. The resulting settlement was named Palmerston, but renamed as Darwin in 1911.
The city of Darwin has been almost entirely rebuilt twice, due firstly to extensive bombing in World War 2, and later due to devastation by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve 1974.
Darwin now has a modern planned satellite city named, fittingly enough, Palmerston.

3. "Whoever has heard of cities being given away as dowry?" thought Corporal Slag. This city, which was given away as dowry had its name changed in 1996 and is home to one of the world's largest film industries. What city does Corporal Slag have in mind?

Answer: Mumbai

Mumbai, the commercial capital of India and largest city of India, was known as Bombay before 1996. The name Mumbai is derived from a local goddess Mumbadevi. Mumbai and Tangier (Morocco) were given as dowry to the British Crown in 1661 when King Charles II of England married Catherine of Braganza, a princess of Portugal. Mumbai is home to Bollywood, the Hindi film industry and is also a hot tourist destination.

5. "Pile O' Bones! Now that sounds like an interesting place to visit!", thought Corporal Slag. Unfortunately for him though, there was no sign of this Canadian city on any of the maps or travel portals. Having been renamed in 1882, what city name should Corporal Slag look out for?

Answer: Regina

Regina is the capital of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The site was earlier known as "Pile O' Bones" due to the presence of buffalo bones on the banks of the Wascana Creek. In 1882, Princess Louise named the city Regina after her mother, Queen Victoria. The city is also commonly nicknamed the "Queen City".

Answer: Texas

Texans refer to their Paris as the "Second Largest Paris in the World." They have their own Eiffel Tower, a smaller version. The 1984 film entitled "Paris, Texas" starred Nastassja Kinski and was rather depressing. Of course, the European Paris has had many films containing its name. It is by almost every account a lovely place indeed, and I'm sure Slag will enjoy it immensely.

7. San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, obtained its present name in the mid-18th century. What was it known as prior to that?

Answer: Puerto Rico

San Juan was established by the Spanish in the early 16th century. Incredibly enough, the entire island was originally named San Juan (after Saint John the Baptist) while the city was named Puerto Rico (Spanish for 'rich city'). However, by the middle of the 18th century, locals were referring to the two reversibly leading to their names being interchanged.

9. After so much of hectic travelling, Corporal Slag was all set for some well earned rest and relaxation on the sunny beaches of Perth in Western Australia. Stepping off the plane, it was hard not to realise something was amiss as he stared at the winter wonderland all around him. Instead of Australia, the Corporal had landed in a city named Perth in which of the following countries?

Answer: Scotland

The city of Perth in central Scotland is located on the River Tay and is of historic and cultural importance. Nicknamed "The Fair City", it was home to the 'Stone of Destiny', a block of sandstone used in the coronation of the monarchs of Scotland.

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, was named after the Scottish city in honour of Sir George Murray, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, who was born in Perth, Scotland. With a coastline on the Indian Ocean, it is home to many beautiful beaches.

There are also cities named Perth in Canada, the United States of America and the Australian state of Tasmania.

10. Corporal Slag is finally on his way to meet the fearless Captain Temujin. Unfortunately, instead of landing up at his university in Toledo, Ohio, Slag finds himself in a completely different country on an entirely different continent! Where in the world is he?

Answer: Spain

Toledo, located on the banks of the Tagus river in central Spain, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has traditionally been famous as a manufacturing base for swords and knives. The city was once the capital of Spain and is well known for the confluence of three different cultures - Christian, Jewish and Islam.

The Ohioan city of Toledo is famous for its glass and automobile industry. The city may have been named after the original one in Spain but the origins of the nomenclature are not very clear.
