Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Africa is an interesting continent due to its eventful history. In addition to being one of the oldest-inhabited places on Earth, centuries of colonization from European settlers have led to unique urban growth, especially along its outer coastlines. While Egypt, and Cairo, have been occupied for thousands of years, other ports throughout Sub-Saharan Africa cropped up when the calendar flipped from BCE to AD.
Many of Africa's largest and most populated cities have grown beyond their capitals. While Cairo has, historically, been a massive population center, other cities, like Lagos (Nigeria), Kano (Nigeria), Fez (Morocco), and Timbuktu (Mali) shifted out of the way for administrative hubs (Abuja, Rabat, and Bamako, respectively).
Some nations complicate capitals further. South Africa, for instance, held three capitals with Cape Town being its legislative capital, Pretoria being its executive capital, and Bloemfontein being its judicial capital. Johannesburg, its largest city (and one of the largest in Africa) isn't even amongst them!
Despite the fact that some mainland capitals, like Banjul (The Gambia) are small, none are quite as small as the offshore capitals like Victoria (Seychelles), Moroni (Comoros), and Praia (Cape Verde) all of which are amongst the smallest national capitals in the world.
In regards to your choices, the following are the capitals:
Conakry, Guinea; Monrovia, Liberia; Maputo, Mozambique; Praia, Cape Verde; Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast; Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Libreville, Gabon; Antananarivo, Madagascar; Asmara, Eritrea; Harare, Zimbabwe; Abuja, Nigeria; Bamako, Mali; Lusaka, Zambia; Dakar, Senegal; Bloemfontein, South Africa (shared with Cape Town and Pretoria).
And although quite well-known for their sizes, locations, and histories, the following were not:
Lagos and Kano, both in Nigeria; Lalibela, Ethiopia; Marrakesh and Tangier, both in Morocco; Mombasa, Kenya; Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, both in Tanzania; Kumasi, Ghana; Luxor, Egypt; Benghazi, Libya; Swakopmund, Namibia; Timbuktu, Mali; Johannesburg and Durban, both in South Africa.
