Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Namibian city is located on the Strip of Caprivi?

Answer: Kosheshe

Windhoek, Swakopmund, and Vioolsdrif are all important cities in Namibia. Kosheshe is a small town in the Caprivi Strip. The Caprivi Strip is a little extra piece of land in northeastern Namibia. It is a hostile area that was under civil war in the 1990s and remains unstable to this date.

The name Caprivi is derived from former German chancellor Leo von Caprivi. He was the Chancellor of Germany during the negotiations with the United Kingdom that created the strip, giving Germany access to the Zambezi River from their territory.
2. Which city on the coast of Lake Victoria is NOT located in Tanzania?

Answer: Mbita

Kanyiragwa is on the western side of Lake Victoria. Bweni and Bumbire are on the eastern side. Mbita is a small town in Kenya.
3. What city in Africa is not located above the Tropic of Cancer?

Answer: Juba, South Sudan

Cairo and Tripoli both border the Mediterranean Sea, therefore it is north of the Tropic of Cancer. Marrakech is in Morocco which completely lies above the Tropic of Cancer.
4. In late 2010, a fruit vendor named Mohammed Bouazizi set himself on fire which triggered the "Arab Spring". This is the common term for the removal of many Arab dictators from countries in North Africa and the Middle East. What North African city was he from?

Answer: Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia

Bouazizi was from Tunisia. After being pushed around by a woman police officer, he set himself ablaze in front of the municipal building. Through social networking, many other countries started revolutions in their own nations.
5. Is Abeche, the capital of the former Ouaddai Kingdom, a city somewhere in Africa?

Answer: Yes

Abeche is a city in Western Chad. Since Chad is a nation in Africa, the city Abeche is also in Africa. It is in the Oauddai region of Chad. The kingdom ceased to exist in 1912 and the region became part of Chad.
6. Maseru is a city in an African country that is completely surrounded by just one other.

Answer: True

Maseru is the capital city of Lesotho. Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa.
7. What African city did Mansa Musa, emperor of Mali in the early 1300s, travel from while he was on the hajj?

Answer: Timbuktu

Medina and Mecca were two key cities on his journey, Rabat had nothing to do with it. At Musa's time, Timbuktu was one of the richest cities. Now it is one of the poorest in the world.
8. Which of these African cities is the furthest north?

Answer: Cairo

In order of latitude from furthest north to south, the cities are as follows: Cairo, Dakar, Addis Ababa, and Malabo. Dakar is in Senegal, Malabo is in Equatorial Guinea, Addis Ababa is in Ethiopia, and Cairo is in Egypt.
9. What country is the African city Bulawayo located in?

Answer: Zimbabwe

Bulawayo is southwest of Harare, Zimbabwe's capital. Bulawayo is the second largest city in Zimbabwe, only behind Zimbabwe's capital.
10. Until 1960, King Leopold of Belgium was the head of state for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Was there ever a town or city named for him in this country after independence?

Answer: No

Kinshasa was already named Leopoldville at independence, but they changed the name to Kinshasa after being independent for a few years. Only an avenue in the city of Bukavu was named for him. The times that Belgium was in charge of Congo were a really bad time for all the Congolese because of some of the horrors that happened. I don't think I should get too deep into the details. I will say though, many of the peoples from the Congo were forced into slavery and they worked for many hours a day. If it wasn't for Edmund Morel, the man who brought the horrors of Belgian rule to the outside world, the Congo could still be in the same situation today.
