Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This destination is the city you travel to in order to see the only remaining example of the famous seven "Wonders of the World".

Answer: Giza

The Great Pyramids of Giza are over 4,500 years old. Giza is the third largest city in Egypt (after Cairo and Alexandria). It lies on the west bank of the Nile River and is a popular tourist destination, not just for its pyramids but also for the Great Sphinx.
2. Many consider the African safari a must-see travel adventure. Hunters coined the term "Big Five" around the five most difficult animals to capture. These include the lion, leopard, cape buffalo, elephant, and what other animal?

Answer: Rhino

There are several parts of Africa where all of the "Big Five" can be found, including South Africa. Many companies now use the term to promote their safaris, where one can go see each of these animals in the wild in a single day.
3. The ruins of Machu Picchu can be found in which region of Peru (a region that shares its name with the capital city of the Inca Empire)?

Answer: Cuzco

Machu Picchu is a very popular destination due to the way it was created: many of the walls, stairs, ramps and terraces seem to have been cut directly from the rock underneath the city. Cuzco (the region and the city) can be found in the Andes, the longest mountain range in the world, running for over 7,000 km (or 4,500 miles) from north to south of the South American continent.
4. The Grand Canyon cuts across two US states.

Answer: False

The Grand Canyon sits entirely within northern Arizona. It is around 277 miles (or 446 km) long as measured along the Colorado River. It has been estimated that over five million people visit the site every year.
5. Which low-lying nation in the Indian Ocean is made up of 1,190 coral islands, only 200 of which are inhabited?

Answer: Maldives

The area of The Maldives is composed of around 99% water. Of the 200 inhabited islands, about half are tourist resorts, meaning there are plenty of choices for a tropical paradise holiday.
6. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on earth and it can be seen from space.

Answer: True

The Great Barrier Reef sits off the Australian east coast. The marine park encompassing it stretches over 3,000km (or 1,800 miles).
7. Which European city, an attraction famed for its fine food, shopping and romance, was first settled by the Gauls prior to the Roman era?

Answer: Paris

Following the settlement by the Gauls, many other cultures have touched the city and it has become an eclectic mix of food, art and architecture. Paris is also nicknamed the "City of Light", having been a major centre of education during the enlightenment period of the 18th century. This nickname probably also partially came about due to the early take-up of street lighting in Paris; it was one of the first cities to use them (as early as 1829).
8. Antarctica has some spectacular and breathtaking landscapes. Following the 1961 treaty of ownership, which country laid the largest claim on Antarctica and continued to hold this largest proportion for fifty years?

Answer: Australia

As at 2011, Australia had claim to 42% of Antarctica. A total of 45 countries signed the treaty in 1961; but within the first fifty years of its operation only seven countries had made claims (Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the UK).
9. Angkor Wat, found in Cambodia, is the largest of what kind of temple complex in the world?

Answer: Hindu

Angkor Wat was built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, later becoming his resting place. Although it is a famed Hindu site, interestingly it was also used a Buddhist temple for a period of time, with all the Hindu deities replaced, in the late 12th century before its Hindu resurgence in the mid 13th century. Angkor Wat is translated as "City of Temples".
10. For a truly adventurous and energetic holiday, you can actually swim from one continent to another across the Bosphorus Strait. Which two continents are these?

Answer: Asia and Europe

The Bosphorus Strait is the world's narrowest strait used for navigation. It is found in Turkey, and separates Asian and European parts of that country which straddles two continents. The swim is a 6.5km journey, an event that draws hundreds of participants each year.
