Question 1 of 10
1. Dated 2/12, a postcard showing Devil's Island, the notorious French penal colony portrayed in "Papillon". Bud scrawls, "I've never been so hot in my life. Betty passed out!" Just where is this one-time hellhole located? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Given the mail situation, the next card was dated 2/10 but it arrived later because of its remote location. On the back side, Bud writes, "You can actually see the coastline of Russia from here and the Japanese also held the island during WWII". The front of the card shows a frozen, rocky crag in the middle of an ice-strewn ocean. Where were these unfortunate folks? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. No date on this postcard, it's a cartoon of a large rodent nibbling on a piece of cheese, wearing shorts and beret. Betty writes, "Bud had a hissy fit when I said 'No more rides'". Where were our friends? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. One day a package arrived with two t-shirts ($1.12 postage due). Mine says "My Friends Went To Venice Beach and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt" while Vera's (the Mrs.) says "Let's Get Pumped". From where were these wrong-sized t-shirts mailed? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Postmarked Memphis, TN, this postcard shows an interior room with orange shag carpet, a white couch and a bunch of TVs built into the wall." Betty writes, "I feel like royalty, myself." Where was she? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. A letter with a photo showing Bud's and Betty's faces in cutouts of two men in suits: on one, the name Boris Spassky, on the other, Bobby Fischer. Where was this picture taken? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. A package arrived and upon opening it, we found the shards of a poorly wrapped commemorative plate. Piecing it together, it showed two, glowing, toothless peasants and read, "We're DE-LIGHTED to be in Chernobyl". From where was the plate sent? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. A packet of blurry photos arrived next. The first showed Bud straddling some kind of line. The next showed two guys in soldiers' uniforms each pulling one of Bud's arms. The rest are just blurry shots - a hand over the lens, stuff like that. A short note said, " Those North Koreans have NO sense of humor." Where was this stop on Bud and Betty's low-rent world tour? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Another postcard: A beautiful sunset on the front, on the back, "Greetings from your friends at the site of a former leper colony". Not having many close friends with this condition, we assumed it was from Bud and Betty. From what state was the post card sent? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Anyway, after they got home, Bud brought back my camera and apologized for breaking it. When I developed the film left inside I found a picture of my ex-friend, Bud, standing on a desolate landscape with sheep grazing in the background? Next to him is a beat up sign that reads "Welcome to St. George's Island." In what ocean was this snapshot taken? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dated 2/12, a postcard showing Devil's Island, the notorious French penal colony portrayed in "Papillon". Bud scrawls, "I've never been so hot in my life. Betty passed out!" Just where is this one-time hellhole located?

Answer: off the coast of French Guiana

Another well-known prisoner was Alfred Dreyfus, later released. The facility was closed in 1938. Doesn't sound like a good start for the world tour.

Answer: Attu

Attu is the westernmost island in the Aleutian chain, just a stone's throw from Russia. No doubt, this stop was one of the reasons the tour was so cheap.
3. No date on this postcard, it's a cartoon of a large rodent nibbling on a piece of cheese, wearing shorts and beret. Betty writes, "Bud had a hissy fit when I said 'No more rides'". Where were our friends?

Answer: EuroDisney

Because of high prices and cross-cultural blunders made by the folks at the Mouse Factory, EuroDisney has never lived up to expectations. The reason this trip was so cheap becomes clearer still.

Answer: California

Venice Beach, CA is a well-known tourist destination complete with body builders, street performers and, obviously, t-shirt shops. A mind altering experience.
5. Postmarked Memphis, TN, this postcard shows an interior room with orange shag carpet, a white couch and a bunch of TVs built into the wall." Betty writes, "I feel like royalty, myself." Where was she?

Answer: Graceland

Home of "The King", Graceland has become a mecca for Elvis' fans. Not known for his interior design sense, the place could best be described as early '70s brothel.
6. A letter with a photo showing Bud's and Betty's faces in cutouts of two men in suits: on one, the name Boris Spassky, on the other, Bobby Fischer. Where was this picture taken?

Answer: Reykjavik

Fischer beat Spassky in '72 in the most-watched, Icelandic chess match ever. Daily dramas, usually instigated by Fischer, undermined Spassky's concentration. Seems Bud and Betty are hitting all the hot spots.
7. A package arrived and upon opening it, we found the shards of a poorly wrapped commemorative plate. Piecing it together, it showed two, glowing, toothless peasants and read, "We're DE-LIGHTED to be in Chernobyl". From where was the plate sent?

Answer: Ukraine

Chernobyl was a USSR nuclear power plant in the Ukraine that exploded and released a radioactive plume into the air in '86. The area around the plant has been abandoned ever since.

Answer: Panmunjom

Bud was just having some fun straddling the line that separates North and South Korea at Panmunjom. North Korean and American soldiers are eyeball to eyeball and even the discussion rooms have a line running through them. BTW, even in the pouring rain, US soldiers don't wear rain gear for their one-hour stint on guard to show the mental toughness of American soldiers.
9. Another postcard: A beautiful sunset on the front, on the back, "Greetings from your friends at the site of a former leper colony". Not having many close friends with this condition, we assumed it was from Bud and Betty. From what state was the post card sent?

Answer: Hawaii

Leprosy is known as "Hansen's disease". One of the few operating "leper colonies" in the US was on the island of Molokai. You might remember "The Simpsons" episode in which Lisa convinces Homer and Bart that they have leprosy and father and son end up at this hospital in paradise.

Answer: South Atlantic

St. George's is a dot of land south of the Falklands (UK). Used primarily as a fishing and whaling stop, it's one of the most remote, desolate places on the planet. Serves 'em right for breaking my camera.
