Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first Cheetah team plays in the Bamburi Rugby Super Series and makes their home in a capital city whose nickname is the "Green City in the Sun". Identify this city that is the capital of the country that is home to the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Answer: Nairobi

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and the home to the Cheetahs of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. Nairobi gets its name from the Maasai phrase 'Enkare Nyirobi', which means "the place of cool waters". The city began as a supply depot on the Uganda Railway in 1899 because of its good supply of water and it is located halfway between Mombasa and Kampala. It gets its nickname from the lush vegetation in the area from this large water supply. In 1905 it became the capital. Both Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro are visible from the city and the city sits on the eastern edge of the Rift Valley. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a large game reserve in southwestern Kenya and is linked on the south to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Bonus pun -
Why isn't there any gambling in Africa?
Because there are too many cheetahs.
2. The Detroit Lions play at Ford Field which is near the Detroit River (USA). The Detroit River connects Lake Erie with which body of water that is named after one of the first followers of St. Francis of Assisi (or maybe it was named after Cliff Huxtable's wife)?

Answer: Lake St. Clair

On the TV show "The Cosby Show", Cliff Huxtable's wife was named Clair and St. Clair of Assisi was one of the first followers of St. Francis. The river is important because it connects the rest of the Great Lakes with the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Erie Canal. Detroit is a major port because of this. The name of the river comes from the French 'Rivière du Détroit', which literally means "River of the Strait". It is called this because it is actually a strait between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie and is only 28 miles long.

Bonus pun -
What do you call a lion wearing a stylish hat? A dandy lion.
3. The Free State Cheetahs call Bloemfontein, South Africa home. Bloemfontein was once the capital of an independent Boer republic but this republic had a color in front of its name - the ____ Free State. This color is closely related to the Dutch heritage of the settlers and a nearby river. What color fills in the blank?

Answer: Orange

It was the Orange Free State (1854-1902). The House of Orange-Nassau was the Dutch royal family from the 15th century up until 1962. Their influence was felt throughout Europe from the time they overthrew Spanish rule and helped the Netherlands gain independence in 1581. Dutch settlement in South Africa began in 1652. The Orange River was named in honor of this royal family by Robert Jacob Gordon. The river is the longest river in South Africa. Its headwaters are found in the Drakensberg Mountains and from there it flows westward to the Atlantic Ocean.

Dutch influence in South Africa has been great. Afrikaans is a daughter language of Dutch and came from the Dutch settlers. Afrikaans has borrowed words from many other languages but 90% or more of its words can be traced directly to Dutch.

Bonus pun -
A cheetah and a lion are racing, and the cheetah wins.
The lion says, "Hey! You a cheetah!"
And the cheetah replies, "Nah... You lion!"
4. Penn State's mascot, the Nittany Lion, is based on the mountain lions that used to roam nearby Mount Nittany. Mount Nittany is part of what larger mountain range that runs the entire length of the eastern seaboard?

Answer: The Appalachians

Mount Nittany is part of the Appalachian Mountains that run from Newfoundland in Canada down the East Coast of the US to Central Alabama. The Appalachians are divided into thirteen provinces of which Mount Nittany is part of the Ridge and Valley province. Legend holds that an Indian warrior, Lion's Paw, was killed and his lover, an Indian Princess named Nit-A-Nee, carried him into the valley and buried him. She erected a mound over his body to honor his bravery and one night during a terrible storm she harnessed the lightning and the mound grew and grew until it became Mount Nittany.

Bonus pun -

5. The Chennai Cheetahs is an ice hockey team formed in 2011. In which unlikely country will you find Chennai and this new hockey league?

Answer: India

Chennai used to be called Madras and is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Because much of India's automobile manufacturing is based in and around the city, it has been called 'The Detroit of Asia'. It also has the second biggest film industry in India, second only to Mumbai. Chennai is one of the only cities in the world to have a national park completely within its boundaries, the Guindy National Park. It is, however, the eighth smallest national park in India, covering only 2.7 square kilometers or a little over one square mile.

6. The York University Lions are based in the largest city in Canada, a city that was founded as the Town of York in 1793. Which city is this?

Answer: Toronto

Toronto was founded on the site of the French Fort Toronto and was renamed York in honor of Prince Frederick, the Duke of York and second son of George III. It was founded on the shores of Lake Ontario and became the capital of Upper Canada in 1796. In 1834, it became Toronto, which is now referred to as Old Toronto. The Megacity of Toronto grew through amalgamation as it added new municipalities to Old Toronto. Toronto is the center of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), which is in turn the center of the Golden Horseshoe. The Golden Horseshoe is the most densely populated section of Canada and accounts for 25% of the population of the country. Toronto is the economic capital of Canada, making it one of the top financial centers in the world.

7. The Vanier College Cheetahs are located in which Canadian city that takes its name from the triple-peaked hill near the city's center which is known in Latin as Mons Regius?

Answer: Montreal

Montreal was originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary", but takes its current name from Mount Royal (Mons Regius in Latin), the hill found in its city center. In modern French this would be Mont-Royal but in middle French it was Mont Real, hence Montreal. It is the largest city in the province of Quebec and is situated at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers on the island of Montreal. The Latin name of Mons Regius gives its name to the Monteregian Hills which are part of the Appalachians. Mount Royal is part of the Monteregian Hills.

8. The Les Lions Indomptables (The Indomitable Lions) are one of the most successful national football (soccer) teams in Africa and had Samuel Eto'o as their team captain in the 2010 World Cup. Which country in Central Africa do they call home?

Answer: Cameroon

By 2010, Cameroon had appeared in the World Cup six times and won four Africa Cup of Nations titles. Cameroon has been called "Africa in miniature" because it has all of the major geographical and climatological zones of Africa. These include a coastal plain, deserts, savannahs (grasslands), mountains, and rainforests. Mount Cameroon is the country's highest point and is an active volcano; it erupted in May of 2000.

Bonus pun -

9. The Carolina Cheetahs of the ABA are based in Greensboro, North Carolina. The colonial Province of North Carolina included the land that would become two states: North Carolina and which other state?

Answer: Tennessee

Originally the Province of Carolina included everything south of Virginia and North of Spanish Florida. This was then broken into the Provinces of North and South Carolina. The Province of North Carolina eventually became the states of North Carolina and Tennessee while the Province of South Carolina eventually became the states of South Carolina and Georgia. Geographically, North Carolina is divided into three sections - the coastal plain, the Piedmont region, and the Appalachians.

10. The Columbia University Lions are located in New York City. The university is located near which 'middle' New York City landmark that includes the Harlem Meer and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark?

Answer: Central Park

Central Park was initially opened in 1857 and then improved and expanded between 1858 and 1873. According to a 2006 "The Trust for Public Land" Report, Central Park is the most visited urban park in the US.
