Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The ships Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery made their "First Landing" at Cape Henry in the present-day city of Virginia Beach. However, they did not put up a settlement here, but chose where?

Answer: Jamestown

Captain Christopher Newport led the three-ship flotilla that first landed English settlers in the New World in April 1607. Rather than settle on the exposed sea coast, they proceeded up the James River and settled on Jamestown Island on May 14th.
2. In September 1781, the naval Battle of the Chesapeake defeated the British squadron that was blockading the port, setting up eventual American victory at Yorktown. What was the nationality of the majority of the warships that defeated the British?

Answer: French

Rear Admiral F.J. Paul, Comte de Grasse, led the victorious fleet of French warships. The French fleet then proceeded to Yorktown to support American and French land forces at the siege of Yorktown, the last major battle of the American Revolution.
3. At the Battle of Craney Island, an American defensive force prevented the British from capturing Norfolk and the naval shipyard there. During which war did this battle take place?

Answer: War of 1812

On June 22nd 1813, American defenders fought off two attempts of the British to land troops on Craney Island for the purpose of seizing the strategically important Gosport Naval Shipyard in Norfolk. Two days later, the British landed across the water at Hampton and left the town in ruins, committing numerous atrocities in revenge for the loss at Craney Island.
4. Fort Monroe, the largest stone fort ever built in the U.S., was a Union strongpoint in Confederate Virginia. In 1831-34, an engineer lieutenant helped finish the fortifications there. Which officer was this, who lost his U.S. citizenship after the War?

Answer: Robert E. Lee

Robert E. Lee graduated from West Point in 1829 and served in the U.S. Army until 1861, when he joined the Confederate Army following his allegiance to his home state of Virginia. Lee designed buildings and oversaw construction that finished the major effort to build Ft. Monroe. Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned at the fort at the end of the war.
5. The Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862 is famous for the first clash of ironclad warships, between the USS Monitor and the ship popularly known as the Merrimack. However, the Merrimack had been renamed after being captured by Confederate forces. What was the name of the ship at the time of the battle?

Answer: Virginia

USS Merrimack was a steam frigate that was burned by U.S. forces to prevent her capture. The Confederates raised the ship and used her intact hull as the basis for the ironclad ram named CSS Virginia. Historians and Southern sympathizers to this day cringe when the battle is termed as the Monitor-Merrimack. A major bridge-tunnel in Hampton Roads has this technically incorrect name.
6. During the American Civil War, a large Grand Contraband Camp grew near the Union stronghold of Fort Monroe, Virginia. Who were the "contrabands" that lived in this area?

Answer: Confederate slaves

Since the Confederates considered slaves to be property, the U.S. took the legal position that any slave in Union territory was "contraband" that did not have to be returned to their owner. By the end of the war, the camp, known by residents as "Slabtown", numbered over 10,000.

This is considered the first self-contained African-American community in the U.S., located on the site of present day Hampton, Virginia.
7. Which Hampton Roads area college is the second-oldest in the U.S., located in Williamsburg, Virginia?

Answer: William & Mary

The College of William & Mary was founded in 1693 on orders from William III and Mary II of England. Three U.S. presidents are alumni, as well as Supreme Court Justice John Marshall, Speaker Henry Clay and 16 signers of the Declaration of Independence.
8. Hampton Roads Virginia is home to three of the ten bridge-tunnels in the world. Which, upon its opening in 1964, was named one of the "Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World"?

Answer: Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) is 23 miles long, comprising 14 miles of bridge and causeway, two one-mile long tunnels, and seven miles of approach roads and artificial islands. The Channel Tunnel between Britain and France displaced the CBBT from the list of Modern Engineering Wonders of the World.
9. Which Hampton Roads area facility is the oldest continually active air force base in the world?

Answer: Langley

Langley Field was established in December 1916. The adjacent NASA Langley Research Center is the oldest NASA field and was location where most of the Mercury-era space training took place.
10. Norfolk, Virginia is home to the museum and tomb for one of the United States' most prominent military leaders. Who is this?

Answer: Douglas MacArthur

The General Douglas MacArthur Memorial is housed in the former Norfolk City Hall, built in 1847. In the early 1960s, the building was gutted and rebuilt as the tomb and museum for Gen. MacArthur. The Memorial was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
