The dispute got the name Whisky War when a bottle of Canadian whisky and a Canadian flag was placed on the island. Comically, Denmark then placed a bottle of schnaps and a Danish flag on the island. In 2022 Hans Island was divided with its western portion belonging to Canada and its eastern portion belonging to Denmark.

Shinzo Abe was first elected to Japanese national politics in 1993 when he became a member of the House of Representatives from the Yamaguchi Prefecture. Abe would remain in politics for the next 29 years of his life as a leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. Gun violence is rare in Japan and Abe's assassin confessed that he killed Abe because of Abe's connection with the Unification Church.

A sitting Speaker of the House had not visited Taiwan since 1997 and tensions between China and the United States increased after the incident. The military exercises by China were looked at as a show of force rather than a provocation.

The accession of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom took place on 6 February 1952 meaning that in 2022 she celebrated 70 years on the throne. In recognition of this amazing accomplishment, the United Kingdom held four days of official celebrations from June 2-5 called the Platinum Jubilee. Sadly, Queen Elizabeth II would die at the age of 96 just three months after her Platinum Jubilee prompting days of mourning and the accession of her son, King Charles III.

Hurricane Ian formed on September 23, 2022 and finally dissipated on October 2, 2022. Its maximum sustained winds were 155 mph (250 km/h) and its destruction left most of the nation of Cuba without power for some time. The storm surge was particularly damaging and deadly in western Florida and over 150 fatalities were attributed to Hurricane Ian.
