Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
In 1968 Mattel released sixteen 1/64 scale die-cast cars in a brand new line called Hot Wheels as an answer to the growing popularity of the Lesney Matchbox. Toys for boys were never the same again! Collectors call these cars the "Sweet Sixteen" or "Original 16". They flew off the shelves so quickly, that Mattel had to think fast and establish factories in Hong Kong to augment what was being produced already in the United States.
That is why there is a Hong Kong version of each car and a U.S. version. All of the cars were painted using the bright, shiny Spectraflame colors, with interesting features, such as hoods that opened, sliding sun roofs, and other details like headlights and engines - just like real cars. While many of the Hot Wheels were based on real cars that were seen on the streets in California, such as the Barracuda, Firebird, and Mustang, others were futuristic fantasy cars, like the Beatnik Bandit and Python.
The incorrect choices were all released in 1970 as part of a Hot Wheels collection called Heavyweights.
