Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game console was the Gameboy's immediate successor. Can you remember its name?

Answer: Gameboy Color

The Gameboy Color (GBC) was released in 1998. One of the original colours was "Atomic Purple" - a translucent purple case which allowed the player to see the system inside. Some of the popular games were: Pokemon Red, The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Croc2 and Harry Potter. I had all of those named, although some of them were released in the early 2000s. "Game and Watch" consoles were before the original Gameboy; Gameboy Advance followed the GBC in 2001, then the DS in 2004/5.
2. In which game were discs stacked up and then knocked down?

Answer: Pogs

I've never played this game myself, though it seems fun! The pogs were stacked up and then were knocked down by a so-called slammer. The player shooting got to keep the pogs that landed face up. The remaining pogs were stacked and when the pogs were all collected, the player with the most won the game.
3. Which toys were around six inches tall, furry and could communicate with each other?

Answer: Furbys

Furbys (or Furbies) were the "must have" toy of 1998. They had a computer chip located between the eyes and could respond to sound and light, with random words and sounds of English and "Furbish", their own language of unintelligable sounds.
4. Which of the following best describes a Tamagotchi?

Answer: A virtual pet

The name Tamgotchi is roughly Japanese for "lovable egg", a reference to the shape of the hand-held toy and the start of the pet's life. The pet starts off as an egg, then grows into a child, then a teen, then an adult. If the pet is well looked after (fed, clean, played with) then it will reach old age.

There are many versions of the game, as it has been redeveloped over time but the original Tamagotchi was released in 1996.
5. In which game do you respond to commands shouted out-loud?

Answer: Bop It

The original Bop It was released in 1996 and only consisted of three commands - "bop it", "pull it" and "twist it". For success, you needed to follow the command quickly and accurately by hitting, pulling or twisting the corresponding part of the handheld game.

In the further models, such as Bop It Extreme and Bop It Extreme 2, two additional commands were added: "flick it" and "spin it".
6. This inch-high toy came in a compact-like plastic home. Do you remember its name?

Answer: Polly Pocket

Polly Pockets were once tiny and plastic, compared to what they are nowadays! Their homes were usually basic, though there were also elaborate mansions and castles in addition. Polly Pocket was in the shops by 1989, though it was mainly considered a 90s toy.
7. These toys were released in 1993, originally various animals but later partly focusing on teddy bears. What was their collective name?

Answer: Beanie Babies

There were nine original Beanie Babies in 1993, such as Legs the Frog, Spot the Dog and Flash the Dolphin. There were also many distinctive bears over the years such as Frankenteddy, Pops and the Signature bears. Gaining popularity, the Ty company also released Beanie Boppers and Buddies.
8. The original 'Baby All Gone' from Baby Alive "ate" bananas.

Answer: False

The original doll from around 1992 "ate" cherries. The new doll (from 2010) still has a cherry dress, though her food is bananas and juice rather than cherries and milk.
9. Which of these toys was produced by Grossman?

Answer: Alien eggs

Aliens were very popular in the 90s - they were small, flexible and jelly-like. Millions of kids believed that they could have babies, and so put them into the fridge / freezer and hoped! Needless to say, none of my aliens ever did give birth!
10. Which of the following was a highly popular collectible card game?

Answer: Pokémon

The Pokémon Trading Card Game was very popular in the late 90s. Many kids would collect the cards, which showed a picture of the Pokémon and had information about it, and keep them in a special ring-binder to keep them safe. There were many rare and holographic cards which were well fought over.
