Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First, finish the lyric from 'West Side Story.' 'Tonight, tonight, the world is full of light,'

Answer: 'With suns and moons all over the place'

'Tonight, tonight, the world is full of light.
With suns and moons all over the place.
Tonight, tonight, the world is wild and bright,
going mad, shooting sparks in to space.
Today the world was just an address,
a place for me to live in,
no better than all right.
But here you are, and what was just a world is a star,
tonight!'

I love this song! While all these lyrics are from 'Tonight', 'I saw you and the world went away' is from the first verse, while all the others are from the second verse, which I just gave you!
2. Fill in this blank from 'My Fair Lady's,' On The Street Where You Live.' 'Are there ______ trees in the heart of town, can you hear a lark in any other part of town? Does enchantment pour out of every door? No, it's just on the street where you live'

Answer: lilac

'And oh, the towering feeling,
just to know, somehow you are near.
The overpowering feeling
that any second you may suddenly appear. People stop and stare,
they don't bother me,
for there's nowhere else on earth that I would rather be.
Let the time go by,
I won't care if I can be here
on the street where you live!'

A song almost out of place in 'My Fair Lady', it is sung by Freddy Eynsford-Hill after meeting a reformed Eliza at the Ascot races.
3. What show/song is this beautiful lyric from? 'In a life where nothing seems real, I have found you, I have found you.'

Answer: "Miss Saigon"- "Last Night of the World"

"A song, played on a solo saxophone.
A crazy sound, a lonely sound,
a cry, that tells us love goes on and on.
Played on a solo saxophone,
it's telling me to hold you tight and dance,
like it's the last night of the world."

Quite possibly the most beautiful song in the show, Chris and Kim sang 'Last Night of the World' on their wedding night.
4. Since this is one of my easier questions, you'll get a smaller lyric. "Sweet intoxication." What iconic show is this beautiful lyric from?

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

"Floating,
falling,
sweet intoxication.
Touch me, trust me,
savor each sensation.
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
to the power of the music that I write.
The power of the music of the night!"

Yes, of course, this hauntingly beautiful lyric is from 'The Music of the Night.' A spectacular song from a spectacular show!
5. During 'The Confrontation' from 'Les Miserables,' Jean Valjean and Javert sing in counterpoint. When Valjean sings 'You know nothing of my life, all I did was steal some bread,' what is Javert's lyric?

Answer: 'No! 24601!'

'Valjean, at last we see each other plain.
Monsieur Le Mayor, you'll wear a different chain.'
'Before you say another word Javert,
before you chain me up like a slave again,
listen to me, there is something I must do.'
(Of course that something was to rescue little Cosette from the Thenardiers, but that's beside my point.)

These lines are a little hard to catch, but they're there.
6. The show is 'Les Miserables.' The song, 'On My Own.' Fill in the blank for this lyric. "On my own, pretending he's beside me. All alone, I walk with him 'til _______"

Answer: morning

"In the darkness,
I feel his arms around me,
and when I lose my way I close my eyes,
and he has found me.
In the rain the pavement shines like silver.
All the lights are misty in the river.
In the darkness the trees are full of starlight,
and all I see is him and me
forever and forever."

Eponine sings this beautiful song after delivering a farewell letter to Cosette from Marius. She laments her love for him, that he loves Cosette and not her, and the fact that, because of unrequited love, she can never be part of his "world that's full of happiness that I have never known!" Tears all around!
7. In 'Beauty and the Beast,' Belle sings 'Home' while in the Beast's castle. Which of these lyrics are not from 'Home?'

Answer: 'How long must this go on, this cruel trick of fate.'

"Is this home?
Is this what I should learn to believe in?
Never dreamed that a home could be dark and cold.
I was told every day in my childhood,
even when we grow old,
home will be where the heart is,
never a word so true.
My heart's far, far away.
Home is too."

The wrong answer is from 'How Long Must This Go On,' where the Beast regrets his behavior that caused his curse.
8. 'All I Ask of You' takes place during the second act of 'The Phantom of the Opera.'

Answer: False

'Say you'll love me every waking moment,
turn my head with talk of summertime.
Say you need me with you now and always.
Promise me that all you say is true.
That's all I ask of you.'

This beautifully romantic love duet between Christine and Raoul takes place at the end of the first act, right before the chandelier crash.
9. Which is of these characters from 'Les Miserables' does not sing in the first act finale, 'One Day More'?

"Tomorrow we'll discover what our God in heaven
has in store.
One more dawn,
one more day,
one day more!"

She was dead, remember?
10. Finish the lyric from 'The Phantom of the Oepra.' "And in this __________, where night is blind."

Answer: labyrinth

"The Phantom of the opera is there,
inside my mind."
11. "Why do they think up stories that link my name with yours?" "Why do the neighbors _______ all day behind their doors?" What is the missing word from 'People Will Say We're In Love" from 'Oklahoma'?

Answer: gossip

"Don't start collecting things,
give me my rose and my glove.
Sweetheart they're suspecting things.
People will say we're in love!"

Don't you love this song? It starts out as a joke between Laurie and Curly about being in love and ends with him declaring his love for her. So sweet!
12. In 'My Fair Lady,' what activity could Eliza Doolittle have done all night?

Answer: Danced

"I could have danced all night,
I could have danced all night,
and still have begged for more.
I could have spread my wings
and done a thousand things
I've never done before.
I'll never know what made it so exciting,
why all at once my heart took flight.
I only know when he began to dance with me,
I could have danced, danced, danced all night!"

Eliza sings this gloriously happy song after conquering 'The Rain in Spain,' and Higgins dances with her in his happiness.
13. "Who am I? Can I condemn this man to ________, pretend I do not see his agony?" What is the missing word from 'Who Am I,' from 'Les Miserables?'

Answer: slavery

"This innocent who wears my face,
who goes to judgement in my place,
who am I? Can I conceal myself forevermore?
Pretend I'm not the man I was before."

Valjean sings this while facing the agonizing decision of whether to turn himself in to the law, and leave his employees jobless, or stay silent and let an innocent man go to jail in his place.
14. Complete this lyric from 'Another Suitcase in Another Hall' from 'Evita.' "Time and time again I've said that I don't care. That I'm immune to gloom, that I'm hard through and through. But every time it matters all my words desert me, so anyone can hurt me ___ ____ __.'

So what happens now?
Where am I going to? Where am I going to?"

Eva sings this song after being ousted by Magaldi and finding out he is married.
15. "Oh! What a circus! Oh what a show! Argentina has ____ __ ______, over the death of an actress called Eva Peron." Finish this 'Evita' lyric.

Answer: "gone to town"

"We've all gone crazy
mourning all day and mourning all night,
falling over ourselves to get all
of the misery right."

Che sings this song after hearing the news of Eva Peron, 'Evita's' death. He then tries to expose her selfish motives by taking us through a narrative of her life.
16. Fill in this blank from 'Love Changes Everything' in the show 'Aspects of Love.' "Love, love changes everything. _______ and faces, earth and sky."

Answer: hands

"Love, love changes everything,
how you live and how you die.
Love can make a summer fly, or a night seem like a lifetime.
Yes love,
love changes everything,
now I tremble at your name.
Nothing in the world will never be the same."

This is from the ALW play 'Aspects of Love,' which I've never seen but I absolutely love this song!
17. Fill in the missing 'Phantom of the Opera' lyric. "Passing _______ and sculpted ______, cold and monumental, seem for you the wrong ____________, you were warm and ________."

Answer: bells, angels, companions, gentle

"Wishing you were somehow here again,
knowing we must say goodbye.
Try to forgive,
teach me to live,
give me the strength to try.
No more memories,
no more silent tears,
no more gazing across the wasted years.
Help me say goodbye."

Christine sings this at the cemetery, knowing if she can free herself from her father's memory, she can also free herself from The Phantom's power.
18. What is the missing lyric from 'Sunset Boulevard?' "When I was a kid I played on this street, I always loved _________. I thought make-believe was truer than life, but now it's all ___________."

Answer: illusion, confusion

"If you were smart
you would keep on walking out of my life,
as fast as you can.
I'm not the one
you should pin your hopes on, you're falling for the wrong kind of man.
This is crazy,
you know we should call it a day,
sound advice,
great advice,
let's throw it away.
I can't control all the things I'm feeling,
I haven't got a prayer.
If I'm a fool well,
I'm too much in love to care!"

In this song 'Too Much In Love To Care' from 'Sunset Boulevard,' Betty Schafer and Joe Gillis have finished the script they are working on, so the walk to the water cooler as a celebration. Betty admits her love for Joe, but she is engaged to his best friend Artie, and Joe is involved with a silent movie starlet, Norma Desmond, who lost her career with the novelty of talking pictures. So much drama!
19. Finish this quote from 'A Little Fall of Rain.' "You're here, that's all I need to know. And you will keep me _______, and you will keep me ________, and rain will make the flowers grow.

Answer: safe, close

"Don't you fret Monsieur Marius,
I don't feel any pain.
A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now.
You're here,
that's all I need to know.
And you will keep me safe,
and you will keep me close,
and rain will make the flowers grow."

After the above mentioned 'On My Own,' Eponine decides to return to the barricade against Marius' wishes. Since she is dressed as a boy, the soldiers on the other side mistake her as a spy and shoot her. She survives long enough to get back to the student's side of the barricade and sing this duet with Marius. She, however, dies before the song is finished, so Marius finishes it for her. Tears!
20. Finish this 'Evita' quote. "High flying, adored. So young, the instant _______."

Answer: queen

"High flying, adored.
Did you believe in your wildest moments
all this would be yours?
That you'd become the lady of them all!
Were there stars in you eyes when you crawled in at night
from the bars,
from the sidewalks,
from the gutter theatrical.
Don't look down,
it's a long, long way to fall."

After Juan Peron's presidential speech and Eva's 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina,' Che sings this at the inaugural ball, wondering how someone so young can become so famous in such a short time.
21. Fill in the blank of this line from 'West Side Story.' "Such a pretty face, such a pretty _______, such a pretty smile, such a pretty me!"

Answer: dress

"See the pretty girl in that mirror there?
Who can that attractive girl be?
Such a pretty face,
such a pretty dress,
such a pretty smile,
such a pretty me!
I feel stunning and entrancing,
feel like running and dancing for joy.
For I'm loved by a pretty wonderful boy!"

This song was sung by Maria in the bridal shop where she works, while she was anticipating her meeting with Tony later that night.

echoes the beating of the drums,
there is a life about to start when tomorrow comes!"
23. Javert mentions specific stars during his solo 'Stars.'

Answer: No

"Stars
in your multitudes,
scarce to be counted,
filling the darkness with order and light.
You are the sentinels, silent and sure,
keeping watch in the night,
keeping watch in the night."

Javert sings this as his promise to himself not to rest until Valjean is 'safe behind bars, I will never rest 'til then, this I swear, this I swear by the stars!'
This song gives me chill bumps every time I hear it!
24. Fill in the missing lyric from 'Beauty and the Beast.' "No pain could be deeper, no life could be cheaper, no _______ anymore, if I can't love her."

Answer: point

"No spirit could win me,
no hope left within me.
How I could have loved her, and that could set me free.
But it's not to be, If I can't love her,
let the world be done with me!"

In the Beast's love song 'If I Can't Love Her,' the Beast thinks back on his curse and what caused it. He believes that even though he could love Belle, she could not see past his ugliness and fall in love with him, therefore breaking the curse. Of course, we all know how that turns out...
25. "God on high, hear my prayer. In my need you have always been there. He is young, he's afraid. Let him rest Heaven blessed." Who is Jean Valjean praying for?

Answer: Marius

"Bring him home, bring him home,
bring him home.
He's like the son I might have known if God had granted me a son.
The summers die,
one by one, how soon they fly,
on and on, and I am old and will be gone."

Valjean has followed Marius to the barricade after intercepting the letter Eponine delivered to Cosette. He realizes Cosette is in love and goes to try and protect Marius from whatever happens at the barricades. He even tells God
"If I die, let me die, let him live, bring him home."I cry whenever I hear this song!
